The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers update for Friday, August 28, teases that some curveballs are ahead on the CBS soap. At the Abbott mansion, Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) bops in whistling and looking disheveled. He bumps into Traci Abbott (Beth Maitland) and worries he’s made too much noise, but Traci reassures him. Traci gives Jack an amused look and wonders if he’s just now getting home.
Jack assures Traci this wasn’t a walk of shame; he was at the office late on a video chat with someone in another time zone. Then, Jack wanted to get all his ideas down while they were fresh in his mind and fell asleep at the desk. Traci’s glad to see Jack so happy and energized – no matter the reason.
However, Traci’s surprised to see Jack so focused on work. Dina Mergeron’s (Marla Adams) home movie message to Jack affected him deeply. John Abbott’s (Jerry Douglas) words about finding love hit home, so Jack promises he’ll never make his life all about work again. Jack intends to find balance, even if it kills him.
In Theo Vanderway’s (Tyler Johnson) hotel suite, he surprises Lola Rosales (Sasha Calle) with breakfast that room service brought up while she was in the shower.
Lola has to get to work, but Theo was hoping they could talk. When Lola wonders if something’s wrong, Theo suggests he hopes not. He knows he’s the first guy Lola’s been with besides Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) and wants to make sure she’s OK.
Lola insists this wasn’t an impulsive move; it was something she’d been wanting to happen for a while now. If Theo really wants to support Lola, she contends that he can help find her bra.
At Society, Summer Newman’s (Hunter King) distracted when Kyle asks about her rescheduled conference call. Summer got an alert related to house-hunting, so she’s talking about it when Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) appears. “Seriously?” Mariah asks, looking irritated. “You guys are launching the search for your new love pad on Lola’s turf?”
Summer doesn’t see why this is Mariah’s business, but Kyle argues that he checked and Lola’s not there. Mariah thinks the least they could do is spare a thought for the person who got crushed in all of this.
Kyle wants Mariah to be fair and adds that the last thing they want to do is rub it in. “I know YOU mean that,” Mariah says to Kyle, clearly suggesting that’s not the case for Summer.
In the kitchen later, Mariah puts Lola through a grilling session about her “hot date.” When Mariah asks what time Lola got home, Lola’s reaction tells her that she never made it back. “Oh. Ohhhhh. Oh,” Mariah says in response. However, Mariah swears no judgement.
Back with Kyle and Summer, they talk about Lola taking the high road. Kyle thinks that’s who Lola is, so Summer makes a comment about giving her a medal for sainthood. She just doesn’t think Mariah needs to be butting in, but Kyle suggests maybe Mariah has a better sense of how Lola’s feeling.
Summer concedes maybe that’s true, but she adds that Lola’s moving on with Theo. Kyle feels like Lola deserves better, so Summer suggests that’s true, too. Just about everybody deserves better than Theo. Kyle argues that since Lola’s moving on with someone who represents everything she despises, maybe it’s a sign that she’s not OK.
Summer gets that Theo’s a jerk, but she doesn’t think hanging out with him is a cry for help. Kyle pushes on the idea of toning it down, so Summer admits it wouldn’t kill them to be more discreet about their hopes for the future.
In the kitchen again, Mariah’s concerned when Lola calls her night with Theo “so much fun.” Mariah doesn’t think that sounds like Lola. Lola admits sleeping with Theo was different since she’s not committed to him, but Theo didn’t pressure her. Lola insists she wouldn’t say she regrets it exactly; she wanted it and enjoyed it.
Mariah stops Lola since this is “TMI,” but she feels like Lola’s trying to convince herself she’s OK with casual encounters. Since Mariah has more experience than Lola, she contends that something can feel good without feeling right – and if that’s the case, it’s something Lola really needs to look at.
Lola thinks she needs more practice for this casual thing to become normal. She feels like she’s playing a part right now, so Mariah wonders if she’s talked to Theo about this. Lola admits Theo would freak out if he knew she was freaking out.
Mariah argues that it’s not freaking out if Lola wants to slow things down or pump the brakes completely. Sleeping with someone once doesn’t mean Lola can’t say no in the future. “It is always your call,” Mariah assures Lola.
In The Grand Phoenix lobby, Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) admits she wanted to see Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) in person to inject some excitement to his morning. Phyllis has big news that’s gotten even bigger since was last in touch. It turns out this is about all the enrollees Phyllis already has for the escape club.
Phyllis insisted it was supposed to remain confidential and then leaked it. Everybody wants to be part of something exclusive. This may be Phyllis’ “most inspired business creation” yet. Phyllis happily toots her own horn in Friday’s Young and the Restless episode, but she’s grateful to Nick as well. Phyllis gets flirty and encourages Nick to follow her upstairs.
In Phyllis’ suite, she gets serious about thanking Nick for helping with this venture and for believing in her as well as not giving up on her. Phyllis jokes about anyone connected to Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) needing an escape most of all.
Nick agrees, but he’s not joking. They recap Adam Newman’s (Mark Grossman) latest disappearing act and Nick’s issues with Victor.
“When are you going to realize that your relationship with her father can never be repaired?” Phyllis asks. Nick’s tried everything with Victor and doesn’t buy into the idea that his dad’s mellowing with age.
Phyllis thinks it’s like watching an “emotional meat grinder” and surprises herself by suggesting Nick should be more like Abby Newman (Melissa Ordway), who’s made her own life.
Phyllis thinks Nick’s always worried about everybody else’s heart breaking, but who will mend Nick’s heart when Victor breaks it? Phyllis doesn’t think there’s anyone Nick needs to throw himself on a grenade for.
Back at the Abbott mansion, Theo’s just paid Dina a visit. Jack gets updates on Theo being Chance Comm’s new director of talent, so Jack congratulates him. They also discuss Dina’s home movie hint and John’s words of wisdom.
Summer finds Mariah in the side dining area of Society, which leads to some bickering. Summer thinks Mariah’s awfully invested in Kyle and Lola’s relationship. She implies that Mariah’s being the cheerleader bestie played a role in their problems, though Lola and Kyle made their own choices.
In Friday’s Y&R episode, Mariah just wants Kyle and Lola to be happy. She’s accepted that means a relationship with Summer for Kyle, but Lola doesn’t need them throwing it in her face. Summer’s irked, but she promises no more house-hunting discussions when Lola could hear – except Lola does hear as she walks out of the kitchen.
Summer doesn’t notice as she walks away, but Lola brings the house-hunting news up to Kyle moments later. Lola’s irritated over Kyle looking at her like she’ll crumble. Kyle just wants to know to make this easier for Lola and suggests maybe they should stop coming to Society. Lola thinks that’s ridiculous; they’re all adults here.
Lola adds that Kyle being sure of his feelings isn’t his strong suit, so Kyle admits he deserves that. Nevertheless, Lola doesn’t want to argue and just wants them to both move on. She’s not rushing into anything serious; she’s just having a little fun.
Lola doesn’t need updates every time “Skyle” reaches a milestone – for sure not when they get engaged, which Lola expects will happen any second now. Kyle insists they haven’t talked about that. “I don’t care!” Lola fires back. Kyle waves the white flag and makes it clear the message has been received. No more walking on eggshells or trying to give her fair warning; they’ll “just be.”
When Theo appears, Mariah stops him from interrupting Kyle and Lola’s long-overdue conversation. Later, Theo tells Lola that she can be straight with him, even if last night was more of a rebound than she thought.
Lola lashes out over Theo thinking she’d sleep with him for such a crappy reason. When Lola’s ready to talk, Theo says she knows where to find him. “Don’t hold your breath,” Lola quips.
Kyle and Summer discuss the possibility of a real estate agent in the park, but Summer has a better idea. Over with Jack at home, he intends to go after all John wanted for him. Jack wants to stop blaming Dina from his mistakes.
He’s had an incredible life, but he’s more alone now than he ever wanted to be. Jack gets choked up about loving and losing so many times. Something tells Jack the best is yet to come.
