The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers update for Wednesday, September 9, teases that some surprises are in store. At Chancellor Communications, Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) is fresh off a plane following her conference. Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) keeps trying to ask questions until Lily finally smiles and tells him to please stop talking.
Once Lily gets some coffee in her, she’s finally able to deal with her partner. Billy’s glad that even Lily needs a java jump in the morning. “Otherwise, you’re practically perfect,” Billy says. “And it’s annoying.”
Talk turns to Lily’s conference and how she wants to focus on diversity. Billy thought they were already a pretty good example of that, but Lily thinks it’s time for them to have a little talk.
Lily contends that they have to do better and word harder. They have to get out there and find people who are maybe on a different path – whether that’s writers, vloggers or something else. There are a lot of voices out there and they have to listen closely.
Billy understands his privilege and saw it first-hand after Hurricane Katrina. Lily insists they were all proud of Billy for pitching in and rebuilding homes. Billy doesn’t want Chance Comm to be an echo chamber and will work even harder to be an ally.
Lily thinks they have to offer the broadest view of the world – and she thinks it’ll boost their credibility, too.
In Phyllis’ suite at The Grand Phoenix, she’s in celebratory mode over the phone. Phyllis gushes about that much money being in one place and wonders how long until her ducks are in a row. Phyllis is so happy she could kiss the person on the other end of the line. This person tells Phyllis exactly what she wants to hear.
At Society, Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) greets “Supergirl” aka Summer Newman (Hunter King), who’s glad he’s never going to stop calling her that. Abby Newman (Melissa Ordway) learns Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) will be joining Nick and Summer, so she struggles to hide her displeasure.
Summer reflects on her argumentative contractor, Tim, who gives her problems on every change she wants to make on the new house. Nick gives some tips on how to handle things, so Summer’s appreciative.
Kyle Abbott’s (Michael Mealor) name comes up, so Nick gets confirmation that everything’s going well for “Skyle.”
Summer feels like things were frustrating in the past because although the attraction was always there, they could never get the timing right. Now Summer and Kyle are finally on the same page. Talk turns to Nick and Phyllis, so Summer admits Nick’s face lights up when he sees her.
Phyllis walks in soon enough and has an announcement for Abby. She pulled together the funds to buy Abby out of the hotel, so she got Abby’s shares 20 years ahead of schedule.
Abby assumes Phyllis borrowed the money from Nick. “I raised it myself, Abby. Every dime,” Phyllis insists. She was able to raise money through the escape club and score the rest from another lender.
Abby will believe it when she sees the money in her account. Once Phyllis joins Nick and Summer at their table, she vows to fill them in later. First, Phyllis wants updates on Sharon. Nick hasn’t heard back yet, but he’s hoping for a positive outcome.
At Sharon Newman’s (Sharon Case) place, she’s stunned over her cancer spreading. Sharon’s sorry and knows this doesn’t seem logical, but she feels like she let everybody down. Rey Rosales (Jordi Vilasuso) assures Sharon that nothing could be further from the truth.
Sharon notes that the news could’ve been much worse and admits it would’ve been easier in a way. She spent so much time replaying every horrible scenario and preparing herself for the worse.
Sharon didn’t expect to get updates on the doctors not getting all the cancer and it spreading to her lymph nodes.
Sharon learned all hope is not lost, but she’s not in the homestretch anymore. Her race just got a whole lot longer and harder. It’s like the starting line again and Sharon insists she can’t do this. “You absolutely can,” Rey insists.
He’s got enough faith in Sharon for both of them. Sharon’s tired of fighting, so Rey acknowledges that even warriors need to rest. Rey promises he’s there for Sharon.
When Rey urges Sharon to eat and keep her strength up, she lashes out over everything being about her health. All the worry and effort feel like they were for nothing. Rey notes that Sharon’s results were a real blow, so he’s understanding about her reaction.
Sharon reflects on how she fantasized about positive outcomes along with the negative. She imagined hearing her doctor say they got all the cancer. Sharon just misses things being normal.
Rey promises Sharon will hear a doctor say she’s cured. “That is not a fantasy,” Rey declares. “It may take longer than anticipated, but it’s going to happen.”
Sharon’s glad her doctor was patient with her. Some of the words that stuck with Sharon were “reconstructive surgery.” Her next procedure is probably going to be pretty invasive, so she’ll have some tough decisions to make soon. Rey notes that they don’t have to decide everything tonight.
Meanwhile, Chelsea Lawson (Melissa Claire Egan) opens the door to find Alyssa Montalvo (Maria DiDomenico). Chelsea puts on an over-the-top act about how great it is to see Alyssa and how Adam Newman (Mark Grossman), who’s supposedly away on business, will be sorry he missed her.
Alyssa’s curious when Adam will be back, so Chelsea lies about not knowing and insists it’s a complicated deal. Chelsea contends that it’s very hush-hush and she shouldn’t be talking to a reporter.
Alyssa notes that she’s a crime reporter, so Adam has nothing to worry about unless he’s done something criminal. “Uh, no…no, I think we’re all in the clear,” Chelsea says with a nervous laugh.
Alyssa asks how Adam’s doing, so Chelsea fibs about Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) killing AJ Montalvo and how hard that was for him. Alyssa admits Adam emphasized how alike they were due to her own father’s issues. Chelsea’s glad the story won’t be published and that they can just leave the past in the past.
Alyssa had the same thought when she left Genoa City, but she’s changed her mind. Her whole career has been about bringing the truth to light. Chelsea’s hoping Alyssa will put off making any decisions for a few days. Alyssa feels like Chelsea and Adam are the perfect couple since Chelsea’s every bit as much a con artist as Adam is.
Alyssa argues that Adam never intended to run the story about AJ – and Chelsea knows it. This was always about using it to blackmail Victor. Alyssa’s appalled over her friend from kindergarten manipulating her. “Being a crime reporter, I know all about sociopaths, but this is some next level stuff,” Alyssa says.
Alyssa knows the real story about Adam killing AJ and intends to make sure everyone else does. Chelsea admits Adam isn’t really on a business trip. She swears she doesn’t know where Adam is or what he’s doing. After all Adam’s memories came back, he was traumatized. Chelsea insists it wasn’t Adam’s fault. He was just a little kid and AJ was threatening his mother.
Alyssa suggests Adam and Victor shouldn’t go on living their lives like what happened to AJ was inconsequential. Chelsea argues that if Alyssa publishes this story, it’ll destroy any chance Adam has of putting the fragments of his life back together – not to mention what it would do to Connor Newman (Judah Mackey).
Chelsea tears up and begs Alyssa not to put another innocent child though what Alyssa went through – having to hear awful things about his father. Alyssa thinks Connor’s a sweet kid and it’ll be hard on him, but it’s better than another generation of deceit. She won’t be guilted into keeping quiet.
On Wednesday’s Young and the Restless episode, Chelsea gets firmer and points out that Alyssa signed an NDA. Alyssa argues that no contract can prevent her from factually reporting on a crime. Even if Adam could enforce it, Alyssa wouldn’t care. Chelsea slips and snarls that they shouldn’t prevent AJ didn’t get exactly what he had coming.
After Chelsea catches herself and tries to backtrack, Alyssa argues that Chelsea’s shown her exactly the kind of person she is. Chelsea rants that she’s the kind of person who’s trying to protect her kid. Chance Chancellor (Donny Boaz) shows up and wants to know what’s going on.
Alyssa guesses that since Chance and Chelsea have been talking, Chelsea must know she’s also looking into Vegas. One way or another, Adam’s crimes will be exposed. On Wednesday’s Y&R episode, Chelsea orders Alyssa out before pushing Chance to reveal if he found Adam.
At Society again, Phyllis fills Nick in on how the papers are signed on her end, so the hotel will be hers alone soon. A text comes in from Rey that leaves Nick looking somber. Nick assumes Sharon’s at a setback.
After Nick takes off to go be with Faith Newman (Alyvia Alyn Lind), Summer returns to the table. Phyllis alludes to the situation with Sharon and Nick’s abrupt departure.
Back at the cottage, Rey notes that he sent a text to all the usual suspects about the results being a mixed bag. Rey told them Sharon needed the night, so Sharon realizes it’s a “don’t call us, we’ll call you situation.”
If Sharon needs time to let the news sink in, Rey tells her to take that time. Sharon is still calling the shots. “I’m not though…the cancer is in charge and in a big way,” Sharon says. Later, Sharon’s settled down a bit and asks Rey to get her some of the cherry crumble Faith made for her.
Once Sharon’s alone, she texts Adam an apology and promises she won’t abandon him. Sharon intends to help Adam get through this.
