The Young and the Restless spoilers tease that the Abbotts will continue to feel the great loss in their family as they deal with the passing of Dina Mergeron (Marla Adams).
As Y&R viewers know, Dina passed away on Friday’s episode of the show in a dramatic turn of events, after Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) presented her with the “teardrop of love” pendant that had been missing from her life for decades.
Dina spoke emphatically to each of her children before dying as she sat in the Abbott living room.
It was certainly a dramatic way for Dina to go, but it did seem like a curious choice to have Dina suddenly awaken and be able to move on her own and speak so coherently, with memories of the past so clear to her.
It was perhaps a bit jarring, given all the dialogue preceding Dina’s scenes describing Dina as being in terrible shape and barely functioning.
After all, Abby Newman (Melissa Ordway) and Traci Abbott (Beth Maitland) had just had a discussion at Crimson Lights about Dina being bedridden and near death.
Abby and Traci’s conversation specifically referenced how Dina was gasping for air the night before and medics had to be called. But many Y&R fans didn’t seem to mind the apparent contradiction, and perhaps that was because Dina’s final scenes were so well acted by Marla Adams.
As one fan commented on Twitter: “She nailed her final scene…There wasn’t a dry eye while I was watching it…All the actors did a fabulous job. Bye Marla, thank you for the years playing the character, Dina. You will be missed!!!”
Another fan commented: “Beautiful episode today! It brought tears to my eyes.” There’s just no doubt that Marla Adams killed it in her final scenes as Dina, especially as she was talking to each of her children in turn and saying a final goodbye.
Another interesting choice by TPTB was to not include flashbacks on Dina’s farewell episode. Given that the promo for the week of October 12 included some flashbacks, it seemed as if Dina’s final episode would include some scenes of the past as well.
Some fans noticed this with one commenting on Twitter: “Could’ve shown some of these during today’s ep. Just sayin.”
The show did, however, provide a nice montage of Dina clips on its YouTube channel, which many fans have seen as it’s been advertised on social media. And Y&R also put out a video of various Y&R stars talking about Marla Adams and how much they admire and will miss her on the show.
So, TPTB seem to have made the decision to honor Marla Adams and Dina Mergeron partly on the show itself and partly with special content that fans had to access elsewhere.
It’s certainly one way to handle the need to balance the episode’s drama with clips and the tribute to the actress herself.
It might not be what all fans would have liked to see, but the bottom line is that Marla and Dina did get an amazing sendoff, and it’s impossible to argue that Marla didn’t evoke serious emotions from fans, who commented all over social media that they were brought to tears or were sobbing when Dina addressed Traci, Jack, and Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson) in her final moments.
