The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease that viewers are in for some tears and a celebration of life as the Abbott family says goodbye to Dina Mergeron (Marla Adams) during the week of October 12.
Of course, Y&R viewers have been aware that this day has been coming ever since Dina was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease some time ago, but that doesn’t mean that it will be any less sad, as Dina’s family and viewers will witness the end of Dina’s life.
The new Y&R promo for the week of October 12 is all about the celebration of Dina’s life and the wonderfully complex character that has been a part of the Y&R landscape since 1983.
The promo, which you can watch below, shows Dina first appearing on the Y&R scene back on May 27, 1983, and confronting John Abbott (Jerry Douglas), who was a legend on the show in his own right.
The promo then moves to some poignant and historic scenes, including a tense discussion with Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson) about her biological father, Brent Davis (Bert Kramer).
During the exchange, Dina firmly tells Ashley that she made mistakes, but that she’d never apologize for Ashley’s existence. Dina’s even shown welding a gun back in the day, promising that Brent will never be a father to Ashley!
Dina was tough, that’s for sure, and many of her decisions throughout the years led to heartbreak for her children, Ashley, Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman), and Traci Abbott (Beth Maitland).
The most notable decision that had a lasting impact was when Dina left John and her children to embark on a new life in Europe. To this day, Ashley, Jack, and Traci struggle with abandonment issues, and it has led to complicated mother/child relationships with Dina over the years.
The promo also shows some scenes in the Abbott mansion that seem to take place after Dina’s passing, with Traci, Jack, and Ashley toasting to their mother. “Dina Abbott Mergeron lived a full, huge, amazing life,” Traci says through tears, while Jack chimes in, “To Dina, and a life well lived.”
Of course, whether Dina’s death will appear on-screen, or whether it will take place off in the bedroom outside of viewers’ awareness remains to be seen, but it does seem that the show is planning a fitting tribute for both the character and its portrayer, Marla Adams.
Some behind-the-scenes action is shown in the promo, with a crew member bringing Marla flowers and members of the cast and crew applauding big.
“Thank you for the memories. You will always be my family,” Marla says to the camera, appearing to speak directly to the Y&R audience. It should be a nice touch to include this level of recognition for Marla, who has been an integral part of the Y&R family for so long.
The promo promises that the Dina death story and the tribute to both Dina Mergeron and Marla Adams will take place on the episode airing on Friday, October 16, so you won’t want to miss it.
