Tonight’s episode begins with Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) walking down a row of storage lockers with flashlights and guns drew. She places a call in when she is attacked from behind by Jeffrey Hudson (Noah Bean); he is able to strike her a few times before she is able to shoot him. At the hospital, Mr. Hudson is handcuffed to the bed, where he is informed that the bullet has been removed and he will require assistance in going to the bathroom; the police officer smirking at him through the door.
FIVE DAYS AGO
Det Lou Ransone (Sasha Roiz) informs Athena that Jeffrey Hudson is in custody but as he places him in the car, his throat is slit by his lawyer. Jeffrey says she is such a crappy lawyer that she made him a murderer instead of getting her off for rape. He then murders her in her own kitchen. Jeffrey then proceeds to go to Lou’s house and is able to find out the file of all the damage he did to Athena, including her address. He joins the neighborhood party at Athena’s house, rummaging through her things, sniffing her lingerie when her son, Harry Grant (Marcanthonee Jon Reis) catches him, saying he doesn’t recognize him from the neighborhood. He says he is a friend of Harry’s mom’s and Harry escort him to the bathroom.
Athena is restless as Capt Elaine Maynard (Claudia Christian) is questioning Michael Grant (Rockmond Dunbar) on who was all at the party. Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) tries to prevent Athena and Michael from fighting as she feels they are wasting time and need to have officers out canvassing the area. Athena suddenly gets a call from Harry who doesn’t know where he is. Jeffrey says someone raised him right as he is being polite and cooperative. Athena pleads like he doesn’t have to but he feels he is being cornered and things are pretty bad. Athena says he could escape as more than half the state is in the dark, he could simply walk into Mexico, just let her son let go. He taunts her that she is not a mom who is a cop, she is a cop who happens to be a mother and says he is going to take something from her like she took from him and hangs up. Michael tries to call her down.
May Grant (Corinne Massiah) is met by Sue Blevins (Debra Christofferson) and learns that her brother has been kidnapped by Jeffrey Hudson. May finds out that she has to stay at the call center and Sue is to keep her safe. She agrees. Athena tells Michael that Elaine is pulling all the resources she can and hopefully Jeffrey can’t resist calling her again and they’ll learn more. Bobby offers to stay with them, but she tells him he is needed at work, as the city needs all the heroes they can get right now. Michael asks if he can take David (La Monde Byrd) to his place as well. As soon as everyone is out of sight, Michael asks her what the plan is as this is their son and she is not leaving him behind this time. Athena wonders what else Lou Jeffrey is using since he has his gun and his phone.
The car stops and Harry is able to break his zip ties and escape the trunk as Jeffrey was in the building. He calls out for Harry, saying he can’t leave the kid out there alone as it is not safe. He says he is going to count to 5 and if he doesn’t show himself he is going to put a bullet in everyone he loves. A girl with a huge dog spots Harry begs her to record it as his parents would want to know what happened to him. He shoves Harry back into the car and Jeffrey shows her the badge, something she gets all on video and he races off.
A 9-1-1 call comes in, saying a man was shot in the autonomous cop free zone, Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark) asks Henrietta “Hen” Wilson (Aisha Hinds) about the zone when they arrive and they are met at the barricade where even Howie “Chimney” Han (Kenneth Choi) is told no official passes the barricades. Bobby arrives, learning the anarchists don’t have rules and he smashes the gate down, demanding to know where the injured guy is. The crew is wondering what is going on with the Capt, who reveals that Harry has been kidnapped and he heads back to the rig.
Harry begins to question Jeffrey who says he knows his mommy is going to come after him but Harry says it’s his dad that is going to beat his ass!! Jeffrey had enough of his crap and points a gun at him, zip ties his hands, and duct tape his mouth, throwing him back in the trunk.
Athena and Michael are driving around, her kind of impressed with Harry’s enterprising skills. Michael learns that Jeffrey hates her so much because she shot off his “junk” and he finds it poetic that she shot off his weapon that he was using for rape. They arrive at their destination, her just asking that he let her go in first. She finds the picture of her face and what he did to her. She orders him not to touch anything as the room is filled with evidence. He begins to toss things and says he cannot sit there and do anything, she orders him to look at her and they are not done as he breaks down. Her phone rings and it is May. She reveals she found Harry, the video was on social media. They find Judy’s location and it is only a matter of time now; Athena is sure of it.
Jeffrey makes another stop as Harry screams, Jeffrey, shoving him into a small space behind the walls. Jeffrey tells him this is all his mother’s fault. She can either save him or come after Jeffrey but she cannot do both. Jeffrey drills up the drywall, sealing Harry in.
Together, Athena and Michael watch the video on Judy’s phone; thanking her for doing this, knowing he is still alive and still fighting. She says they were struggling and the guy was getting into the car and he showed her the badge. She tells Michael how smart their son is and they did a really great job, Michael smiles and tries to praise Athena, but when he looks back, she is pulling the car out of the driveway and go. Athena speeds down the freeway, listening to Jeffrey’s instructions on where to meet him; only learning that she is meeting him in the autonomous zone.
Everyone at the firehouse doesn’t know how to cope with Capt as they all know Jeffrey only attacks women so why would he take Harry? He says that is exactly what he is doing. Bobby is praying the rosary when Michael calls him, saying they got an emergency; the alarms sound in the station and everyone is off.
Athena approaches the zone, shows the video of Jeffrey with the badge, and says she is alone, and demands to know where her son is. He says she is not the one calling the shots and she questions about the innocent civilians he could hurt, but he thinks they are simple thieves. He wants to know when she refers to “dirty cop” is she referring to him or her? The video does its job and the people out him, he escapes the zone and Athena gives chase.
Athena is once again in the dark, using her flashlight and gun raised. She calls out for Jeffrey, saying if he proves to her that her son is safe she will let him walk out of there. She informs him that Lou is alive, but he didn’t know that since he was squatting at his place and she knows it was his lawyer and things are not hopeless. She tells him things are definitely not dark, and the lights of the firetruck light him up. He is impressed saying she lured him down there, she calls him a bitch and says she chased him down there and orders him to drop the gun. She reminds him that when he came at her, he came at everyone she loves. He says if she hadn’t gotten her gun that night she wouldn’t be there right now and she says had she not got the gun, he’d still be peeing standing up and orders him to drop it or make her shoot him again. He points the gun at Bobby, her firefighter husband, forcing her to shoot him repeatedly. She is upset as he says the gun wasn’t loaded and pleads where her son is. He says there is no pulse and now they have no clue where Harry is.
Athena tells Elaine and Michael that Jeffrey wasn’t a stupid man and she played right into his hands and she begins to crumble. Michael says she sent him straight into hell where he belongs and they will find him as Harry is still alive. Athena begins to review with all the evidence they have; Michael finding keys that might belong to a real estate office. They race off, smashing through fences, the fire department rushing through houses looking for Harry, everyone calling his name. Michael begins to feel it is a wild goose chase when they spot paint cans… Athena gets wet paint on her hands and Buck hacks through the wall; Michael finding him. Harry is breathing and Bobby grabs Athena who is shaking.
Michael goes into the ambulance and after a nice tight squeeze from Bobby, Athena joins him for the ride to the hospital. Howie says his vitals are good. Harry asks if his mom got him and she reassures him that she got him and now they have him too, she begins to cry and Michael hugs her.
At the call center, they can hear the power come back on, some thrilled that the air conditioning is back on. May has a huge grin on her face when she sees a message coming in from her brother. Meanwhile, Maddie Kendall (Jennifer Love Hewitt) calls Howie and gets his voicemail, but instead of leaving a message, she tells him they are good there and hope he is good too and hangs up.
Everyone wonders who Capt left in charge and Howie feels it is him because of the manly glance they shared before he left and Hen says if he wasn’t back by end of the shift he would close up in the morning. Athena comes to May, assuring her that Harry is safe and she is good and holds her daughter. Henrietta tells her daughter she cannot wait to go home and see her. Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman) is excited to go home as Buck asks if Christopher Diaz (Gavin McHugh) knows he is coming home; he admits that he doesn’t as he has no clue what he is going to say to Ana Flores (Gabrielle Walsh) when he gets there.
Buck gets home, drops on the bed, happy to hear the news. Michael is concerned that Harry doesn’t want to go to bed, sure he is exhausted. Michael reassures him that he can talk to him but he insists he is fine. Maddie gets the baby ready and heads out the door to go visit Howie at work. Meanwhile, Eddie has breakfast with Ana and Christopher, suggesting she go home and have some time for herself. She says she is not going to leave him with a disaster in the kitchen and she starts to clean as he closes the door. She begins to babble and he tells her to stop, saying they need to talk. She doesn’t want him to panic when he thinks about her or a future with her and she can’t take that. He knows that Chris loves her so much and thought that eventually he would too; she feels he should have said something sooner. She apologizes about the mess and feels it is his mess now, she tears up, calling him an amazing father and she is going to say goodbye to Christopher, kissing him on the cheek.
Howie gets home, saying all he wants to do is close the curtains and go to sleep. He calls out to Maddie, but no response. Capt calls him and he heads back to the firehouse where Capt is upstairs with his daughter. Ravi (Anirudh Pisharody) explains that Maddie dropped the baby off with him as he was the only one there. She asked Ravi to give him a video message, which explains that she is not in any danger but the baby is not safe with her, not now but she knows he will take really good care of her and the baby is better off without her. Maddie cries, explaining she loves him, both of them and she is really sorry. Howie just cries looking at Bobby.
