In tonight’s American Idol episode, the search is on to find the next American Idol. Many watched as Carrie Underwood went on to win her season and they took inspiration from her. Up first was Laila Mach. She performed an original song about heartbreak and it seems to have inspired the judges. The judges loved the song. They thought her voice sounded great as she performed and they liked the originality aspect. The judges voted to give Laila a Golden Ticket. The fifteen-year-old from Upstate New York was going to Hollywood and soon she’ll meet the other talents from tonight again. The next performer was Re’h. She was serving in the National Guard and she has a great song. She has a great vibe about her, but she chose the wrong song.

Re’h chose “Bad Girls” by Donna Summer. She came out in a very 70s/Disco outfit and she looked great, but her voice sounded wobbly and it didn’t get good until near the end. She went after the high note and she showed that she does have a great voice. She just chose the wrong song. The judges were fans of hers. They respected her service and so they were willing to overlook the wobble. They gave Re’h the Golden Ticket. She was going to Hollywood where hopefully she’ll learn where she went wrong and will approve. The judges had fun during these things. They play games and at one point Katy and Luke were talking about a football game while this poor guy was just standing there ready to sing.

When they were ready to hear the poor guy out, Michael performed his original song. He has a good voice and he too showed originality. He also didn’t hurt that he had an Ed Sheeran vibe even down to the ginger hair. Next up was Cameron McGhar. She was sixteen and a cheerleader from Alabama. Cameron lives with her Nana. Her Nana has been raising her since she was a baby because there were issues with both parents and singing was as much Cameron’s dream as it was her Nana’s. They both wanted Cameron to succeed. She performed “Girl Crush” for the judges and they hadn’t liked it. They said there was a disconnect. Cameron has a big voice and she does have a great voice, but the nerves were getting to her and so “Girl Crush” wasn’t it for her.

Cameron asked for a second chance. She performed another song. This time by Loretta Lynn and it was much better than the first one, but the judges hadn’t liked that they had to drag this performance out of her and so the judges almost turned her down. Lionel gave her a “no” while the other two judges voted “yes” and that was enough to send her to Hollywood. Cameron got lucky. Often the contestants fail in their song selection. Their voice has to transcend even bad songs and so that was an important note going forward. The next contestant was Brennan Hepler. He had fun with his song. He sang and was lyrical and he threw in some rap as well. Brennan or Beane as he calls himself was talented.

Beane grew up with his grandparents. His grandfather was a pastor and his grandmother handled all the music at church. Beane spoke with his grandma right before he performed. She was all teary-eyed as she wished him the best of luck and she was the first person he showed off his Golden Ticket to. Next up was Anthony Key. He’s been performing since he was five years old because he liked the attention and his style was the Boy Band. Anthony loves the singing and dancing aspect of boy bands but he especially loves the idea of getting the girls. Anthony was into singing for all the wrong reasons and his voice wasn’t strong on its own. He chose the song “Dynamite” by BTS. He went for the high notes and he choreographed his own dancing to go with it.

Anthony ended up teaching the judges some of his dance moves. They loved dancing with him but they said they couldn’t hear his voice because he was too busy impersonating various boy bands and so it had to be a “no” tonight. They told him to stick to choreography. Except he believes that he’s genuinely talented and he said he’ll one day become the pop star he always dreamed of. Next Up was Ash. Ash was turning twenty-two the next day and she came with her dad. Ash was a daddy’s girl. It was hard on her because her father is an addict. He struggled with addiction her whole childhood and she was angry with him when she grew up. She also missed him. She never allowed herself to be angry with him for the few times that he did show up because she hadn’t wanted to lose them and so it’s great that they’re working on their relationship.

Ash’s father is clean now. He’s more involved in his daughter’s life and it was his birthday that day. Ash wrote an original song in honor of him. She had him come in as she performed it and he was so proud. He hugged her the second she was finished singing. He was also there when he found out she was going to Hollywood and so it a great birthday present for him. Next up was Cheryl K. She was so excited that she actually let out a “whoo” when she got there and she came with friends. She came with her dog. His name is Jimmy Choo. He was adorable and so was she. Cheryl’s favorite song was “Endless Love” and she performed it with her idol. She and Lionel rocked it out to that song. She also got to tell her story.

It just wasn’t enough. Cheryl didn’t get the Golden Ticket and so hopefully she’ll come back next season. Next up was Heather Russell. She was another one who took a gamble. She performed a Katy Perry song. She performed “Harleys in Hawaii” and she put her own spin on it. She added a lot of runs. She added tricks to the song and luckily it worked for her. Heather received a Golden Ticket. The judges said her voice was one of the best ones they’ve heard all year and so they gave her the Golden Ticket because they knew once she realized her own power – she was going to be unstoppable. Next up was Caleb Kennedy. Caleb was from a small town called Roebuck and he was a singer/songwriter.

Caleb was sixteen. He was close to his mom and she would help gather people to come to hear him sing. Caleb turned to music after his parents divorced. He was a little lost for a while and music helped bring his personality out, but he was nervous tonight and he lacked self-confidence. He was apologizing for his voice before the judges had even said anything. The judges had liked his original song. They had liked his voice. They gave him the Golden Ticket and so maybe they will help with his confidence issues because who knows what it will take? Caleb was also told tonight that he brought some country realness to his music. He connected with people and so now truly is the time to stop thinking he was just good for writing songs.

Next up was Abby LaBaron. She was nineteen and she decided to try out to be on “American Idol” once she heard that she could do it from home. Abby was another nervous one. She didn’t look at the judges as she performed “All I Want” and she mostly performed her song with her eyes closed. Abby also committed several other mistakes. The judges told her that she would have to work on that and they still gave her the Golden Ticket because they mostly liked what they heard. They were also willing to give second chances to people who weren’t perfect. And yet these second chances were very selective. The judges gave it out to a few people because they couldn’t let everyone through and so tonight they were looking for something special. Something rare.

Next up was Phillip Murphy. He was known as just Murphy and he traveled the country performing. Murphy was so calm before the judges. He told his story and he performed the song “Just the Two of Us”. But it wasn’t enough. The judges felt he held himself back and so they asked him to give it another go because they felt there was more there. Murphy next performed his original song “The Painted Man”. His original song sounded so much better than his first song. The judges preferred his second song and they sent him to Hollywood based on that song and so he shouldn’t have been doubting himself so much. The next contestant was Alyssa. Alyssa was over six feet tall and she has to deal with the stares and self-consciousness growing up.

Alyssa Wray was from a small town. She’s from Perryville, Kentucky and so the judges joked that maybe their Perry should move there because then she’ll be Perry from Perryville. Jokes aside, the judges were interested in hearing from Alyssa. She turned to music to help her focus and she chose a Jennifer Hudson song. She chose “I Am Changing” from the hit “Dreamgirls”. She did it justice with her big voice and the judges loved her. They gave her the Golden Ticket. The kid from a small town who traveled with her mom was going to Hollywood.

THE END!
