In tonight’s American Idol episode, the Top 12 were revealed tonight. Who is it going to be? Wait and see! Luke Bryan wasn’t able to join the cast tonight because he tested positive for Covid-19 and so Paula Abdul was replacing him. She was an OG judge. She was one of the original judges that began and were closely associated with “American Idol”. The only other person there who knew what it was like to work with her was Ryan. Ryan has been around since season one. He and Paula caught up at the beginning of the show and she told him that she missed their other brother Randy and their grandfather, Simon. Paula was full of jokes tonight. She and Ryan had a few laughs and then they got back to business. Ryan announced the first person to make it into the Top 10.
How it works is that ten of the contestants were voted in by America. The remaining two were going to be chosen by Wild Card and what that means is the judges are going to be making the selections. However, the first person going into the next round right away was Casey Bishop. The Rock N Roll singer took on the song “House of The Rising Sun” tonight. She sounded amazing and she was a favorite of everyone. It was Luke who first said Casey could win the whole competition. He wasn’t here tonight but he must be watching at home and so he was cheering her on from the sidelines. The next performance came from Colin Jamieson. He performed “Waves” and it showed such growth that the judges had to comment on it.
Colin started out his musical career in an offbeat boy band. He auditioned with a song that the judges thought was too breathy and, from there, he just learned to stand out. He was always confident. He even gave a wink to the camera during his audition and so confidence was never a problem with him. It was more shedding the boy band persona. He needed to take center stage as a solo artist and that’s what he did throughout Season 19. He just wasn’t told right away if he was safe or not. Next up was Deshawn Goncalves. He was someone who loved to take on a challenge and so he decided on something up-tempo because he wanted to show the audience his full range. He performed “Higher Ground”. And he also learned he made it into the Top 10.
The third person to be told they were immune from the Wild Card battle was Cassandra Coleman. She performed “Light On” and her voice was a bit off tonight. She didn’t sound as great as she normally would have and so it’s a good thing America voted for her because she might have been genuinely screwed with the judges for that one performance. Next up was Caleb Kennedy. He was given instant immunity as well and so he joined the Top 10. He also performed an original song as his fight song and it was titled “Nowhere”. Caleb performed it without his usual guitar or his signature hat. This time he showed his whole face. He performed with a new sense of confidence and so the only drawback is that Luke wasn’t there to see it for himself.
Speaking of judges, Randy zoomed in. He was watching the show from home when he called Ryan and so there was a mini-reunion between him, Ryan, and Paula. Anything goes tonight. The judges knew it and so did the contestants. Madison Watkins’s name was called only she wasn’t safe. She had to give a performance that will hopefully sway the judges in voting for her and so she chose the song “Hot Line Bling”. Her voice was once again wonderful. She also brought such a lightness to the stage that the judges alluded that they wouldn’t want to let her go. Next up was Ava August. The fifteen-year-old was the youngest in the competition and she was given immunity early on. She was one of the Top 10.
Ava performed the song “Love Of My Life” by Queen. She went back to the classics after Katy told her that the pop songs are easy while classic songs are cooler and now the judges are saying she sounds like a pro. Next up was Beane. He was not given instant immunity and so his song selection was more important than ever. Beane had to impress the judges. He managed to do so with the song “Grow As We Go” and Lionel would later say that he relaxed into his talent. Beane knows how talented he is. He gave the judges the best of himself and they all loved him. Katy called herself a Beanie Baby. Paula was happy to be there to witness his performance tonight and Lionel was of course himself a fan.
Next up was Chayce Beckham. He was given instant immunity and was, therefore, part of the Top 10. Chayce was known for his raspy and unique voice. He performed the song “What Brings Life Also Kills”. It was a bit hard to follow the song. It mostly sounded unintelligible and so the judges instead talked about his cool vibe. Chayce finally got to wear all black like his idol Johnny Cash and he looked cool. The next name to be called was Alyssa Wray. She was given instant immunity and the song she chose was “Greatest Love of All”. It was a Whitney Houston song. It was a complicated song and Paula didn’t think it truly fit. She thought Alyssa chose the song to be brave. Which is fine but she didn’t get to shine in her own beautiful way and that’s the problem Paula had with the performance.
Then there was Alanis Sophia. She went next. She took risks the other night and the judges had enjoyed that. Only the song “Heart Attack” might have been too big of a risk for a night like tonight. Alanis wasn’t given immunity and so she was battling for a place and this song was wrong for her. The song she chose was on the complicated side. It also didn’t help that the judges could see her thinking about the notes while she performed and so they did bring that up with her later on. Up next was Willie Spence. He performed “Diamonds” It was the same song that Willie went viral with back in 2017 and so he brought it out again as a potential fight song. And it turns out he didn’t even need it because he was a part of the Top 10.
The next person to be called was Grace Kinstler and she instantly joined the ranks of the Top 10. She performed “Dangerous Woman” tonight. She sounded beautiful and it was clear to everyone why America voted for her. But, with only one spot open, the last two remaining contestants were anxiously awaiting word from Ryan. Hunter was the next and final person to be joining the Top 10. He performed the song “I Can’t Make You Love Me”. It was a great selection for him because it basically described his whole time on the show and how the judges were always looking for something more from him and he would always try but somehow he just kept failing and so it’s a good thing America voted him in.
The final performance of the night went to Graham DeFranco. If people are remembering Wyatt Pike and wondering what happened to him, he withdrew from the competition. There was no reason given and so it could be anything. Wyatt was a true talent. He easily could have made it to the next round and not knowing what happened to him has led to a lot of questions. Yet, the show continued without him. Graham performed the song “Cover Me Up”. The judges were smiling throughout his performance and Lionel later said Graham was punching his way to his future. Graham, like everyone who wasn’t given instant immunity, was singing for his future in the competition and the judges only deliberated over a short commercial break.
The winners of the Wild Card were Madison and Beane and both of them made up the Top 12.
THE END!
