General Hospital (GH) spoilers recap for Friday, July 16, reveals that Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) grilled Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) about her mystery man – and Lenny Caulfield (Rif Hutton) faced a devastating cancer diagnosis. Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) also warned Austin Gatlin Holt (Roger Howarth), so here’s how it all went down on Friday’s fantastic episode.
At the Metro Court, Jason told Carly Corinthos (Laura Wright) that although he thought Brando Corbin (Johnny Wactor) should focus on his family with Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson), he wouldn’t deny Brando a mob job if he wanted it.
When Sam approached Jason and Carly, she complimented the “nice rock” the bride-to-be was sporting on her finger. Sam wanted to speak with Jason about his impending marriage alone, so Carly stepped aside.
After Sam said she’d let Jason tell Danny Morgan (Porter Fasullo) the engagement news, she quizzed Jason about his reasons.
Jason talked about Carly being his best friend and added that they both felt the loss of Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard).
Sam suggested that Carly and Jason always came first in line for each other ahead of everybody else.
Sam accepted the situation while Carly offered support to Maxie.
When Sam cornered Carly again, she acknowledged that this engagement wouldn’t have happened without a good reason or if Sonny was still around. If there was anything Sam could do, she told Carly to let her know.
Sam met up with Maxie, who quickly deduced that Sam had a new mystery man in her life.
This delighted Maxie, but Sam didn’t think her recent drunken kiss counted. Maxie disagreed since it was the only one Sam had shared with someone new since her split from Jason.
Before Maxie wrapped up the chat, she asked Sam to look after Damian Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) while she was in Texas.
Since Ellie Spinelli (Emily Wilson) decided to move out and Maxie was taking Georgie Spinelli (Lily Fisher), Maxie worried about Spinelli being all alone. Sam assured Maxie she’d offer support.
Back with Jason, he discussed Novak drama with Carly before mentioning that he was headed off to see Monica Quartermaine (Leslie Charleson).
Jason kissed Carly on the cheek before he left, which she seemed to find a bit awkward.
At the Quartermaine mansion, Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) suggested that what Austin really wanted was recognition.
Ned Quartermaine (Wally Kurth) realized Michael was talking about a charm offensive where they played nice with Austin, but Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) felt the guy was dangerous.
Ned grew suspicious and wondered what Brook Lynn knew about Austin that they didn’t. He didn’t see any reason to view Austin as some terrible threat.
Brook Lynn did her best to cover while Nina headed to the gatehouse, where Wiley Quartermaine-Corinthos (Erik and Theo Olson) was still down for a nap.
Nina talked to Willow Tait (Katelyn MacMullen) while she waited and was touched to learn Wiley’s parents talked to him about his grandma all the time.
They even had a tablet with Nina’s picture on it as part of a family album they showed Wiley regularly.
When Carly arrived, Nina was cordial and even congratulated her on the engagement.
At New York Methodist Hospital, a nurse led Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) to human resources before she could cross paths with “Mike” aka Sonny.
Lenny eventually came back with his doctor following a scan, so Sonny realized it had revealed bad news.
Lenny didn’t want to tell Phyllis Caulfield (Joyce Guy) just yet since she was chatting with a stranger. He urged Sonny to let Phyllis hold onto hope for a little longer.
Meanwhile, Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) admitted that he recognized Phyllis’ name. Valentin explained that Nina was his ex-wife, so Phyllis’ mood quickly soured.
Valentin assured Phyllis that Nina was a special lady and that he was glad for the help the Caulfields had given her in Nixon Falls. Phyllis piped up about how “Mike” the bartender had helped take care of Nina, too.
When Phyllis reconvened with Lenny and Sonny, she found out that Lenny had more than just a bad heart. He also had cancer.
There was a mass on Lenny’s pancreas that was quite larger, but Sonny piped up that there were treatment options.
Lenny refused to pile debt on Phyllis and stormed out, so Sonny called Nina to insist that they all needed her. He hoped Nina was willing to come home to Nixon Falls.
Meanwhile, Sasha admitted to Brando that she’d been distant because of her mob concerns. She had someone to protect now – meaning her baby.
Sasha suggested that Brando was the kind of man she wanted to raise a child with, but if he was part of the Corinthos mob or any mob for that matter – there’d be no choice at all.
Sasha would raise the baby on her own if that was Brando’s call.
Over with Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard), he was discouraged since his only progress was being able to move his toes slightly.
Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) offered a pep talk and distracted Chase with talk of his mystery woman.
Although Dante didn’t think new love was in the cards, Chase felt his old partner should go after happiness if he could get it.
At GH, there was plenty of tension between Monica and Austin before Jason arrived. Jason privately let Monica know he’d look into Austin for her. Afterward, Austin wound up talking to Jason about being from the same illegitimate branch of the family tree.
However, Jason argued that ELQ mattered to his family and that meant it mattered to him. He intended to protect both his family and the company.
Back with Anna in Manhattan, she found out the pilot was likely at Ryan’s Bar.
Anna wanted to go alone, but she relented when Valentin pushed to be her wingman – as long as he did things her way.
