A body was found at a shooting range. The victim was Navy Reservist Lt. Victor Bateson. Bateson’s remains were found in one of the junk cars at the end of the range and he was shot multiple times. The team came to suspect that Bateson got drunk before wandering around. His remains smelled of liquor and it was theorized that he went into the backseat of the old beat up car to rest. He probably didn’t wake in time to hear the gunshots and that’s what killed him. Bateson was shot. But he wasn’t killed at range. Palmer looked at the body and he determined that Bateson was killed elsewhere. His body had just been dumped at the shooting range. The killer most likely dropped him off there so that hide the real bullet amongst the many and it was working. The only one to find the killing shot was by connecting each bullet to the guns on the range. And the one that’s missing will be the murder weapon.
The team also looked into Bateson. He wasn’t a regular at the range nor did he sign in that day or the night before and so the team didn’t know why he went to the range. They just know he did. He went there and he died. The question now is why? Bateson didn’t have much by the way of family but there was an ex-wife and nine times out of ten its usually the ex. The team went to the ex-wife’s home. They ended up running into Kasie there. Kasie was a part of a group of women looking to buy a gun and she later admitted to Knight that she hasn’t been the same since the assassin held her hostage. Kasie has been trying to get better. She was taking martial arts classes and now she was thinking of buying a gun.
The ex-wife hasn’t been in much contact with Bateson before his death. She did know that he was working at an Expo Center and that he thought it was safer than his normal shifts at the bar. At the Expo Center, Bateson has to deal with gun shows and pageants. It was better than dealing with out of control drunks that takes a swing at you and he got to help out friends. Bateson helped a young woman get a prime spot to sell her guns. She was great in that spot and unfortunately others were complaining about it. The expo was holding a gun show. Everyone had guns and so everyone had to be questioned. The team move through the group by first starting with the guy complaining. They then moved onto people who had to be escorted out of the venue.
The team tracked down the guy. They spoke to him and he said it was Bateson who got rough with him as he was being escorted out. He also revealed he saw Bateson making out with his girlfriend. It turns out the girlfriend works for Bateson’s ex-wife. The team had even spoken to her earlier and she hadn’t mentioned the relationship. Doris said she withheld the information because she hadn’t wanted her boss to find out. If her boss learned Doris was sleeping with the woman’s ex-husband, she might find herself out of a job. It would also ruin the friendship. Bateson, his ex-wife, and Doris were all friends. They all got along. Not even the ex having to pay Bateson alimony got in the way because Bateson was a good guy and he was working two jobs just to get off the alimony.
And him being in a relationship with Doris would mean he has another reason to end alimony. He might have been looking to marry again and so his ex-wife doesn’t have a motive to kill him. She instead would have been thrilled to find out he was moving on. Neither the ex-wife nor the current girlfriend killed Bateson. The gun that killed him belonged to a classic weapon from the early 1900s. There was a guy selling weapons like that at the expo and so the team later asked him where he was the night Bateson was killed. He said he was selling his guns. He also said that it wasn’t his guy that killed Bateson because the last gun he had liked that had been sold days before the murder. But the team couldn’t just take this guy at his word.
They tracked down the man he sold the gun to. It was actually Bateson’s other boss at the bar and unfortunately the bar owner was the killer. He noticed a missing three hundred dollars. He confronted Bateson and Bateson got mad. He got out of control. His boss was worried and so he pulls out his gun and accidentally fires. And funnily enough, the guy found the three hundred dollars a couple of days after the murder.
He had misplaced it and accused and then killed an innocent man.
Later, Kasie went to the shooting range with a friend and she was starting to enjoy herself.
The End!
