The episode begins with the pandemic being over for Station 19. Seattle was even celebrating the end of the pandemic with an event known as the Phoenix Fair and so the only thing that was ruining the moment was the demotion. Captain Maya Bishop was relieved of duty. Maya was no longer captain and she had been forced to accept that decision in order to keep the team together. Or as much of the team she could. Andy was reassigned to Station 23 because she spoke up for Maya and there was nothing Maya could do to stop it. Maya agreed to step down during an investigation into her as long as it kept everyone else together at Station 19. But her decision to step down meant everyone was angry at Sullivan.

Sullivan also lost his wife because of his decision to badmouth Maya. Sullivan admitted to his wife what he did and he was surprised to see she wasn’t pleased. He actually thought he had made a great decision for his career however he spat on the friendships he had with everyone in the house and his wife wasn’t speaking to him. She just stopped communicating altogether. She hadn’t spoken to him in ten months when he finally had enough and visited her. Sullivan wanted to give their marriage another try. They married in haste so that her dying father could attend and they’ve been struggling ever since. If it wasn’t one thing, it was another. Sullivan had been a captain when they met. He even became Battalion Chief during their courtship.

Then his addiction got out of hand. Sullivan was demoted down to a probie because he stole drugs from a new department within SFD and there had to be repercussions. Only Sullivan hadn’t liked the demotion. He thought it was demeaning and he has been fighting to get back the authority as much as possible. It’s why he turned on Maya. Maya had been a great friend to him and a great boss. She never lauded her rank over him. She treated him like everyone else. She was also best friend to his wife and so you would think that would count for something and it hadn’t. He still betrayed Maya. He betrayed his wife. His wife stopped talking to him and so he finally found the courage to seek her out at her new house.

Andy was still angry. She hated working out of Station 23 because it didn’t feel like home to her and yet she hadn’t filed for divorce. It could be because she still loves Sullivan or it could be another form to hurt him. Who knows after ten months. Andy told the whole team what Sullivan did and they now saw him for the ruthless man that he is. Ben called him ruthless to his face. He did it at Maya’s wedding because Sullivan had stuck around for some reason and so Ben told him what they were all thinking. He asked Sullivan why he hadn’t left yet? Sullivan didn’t have an answer for him then and he still doesn’t have an answer. He betrayed Maya and a new guy was brought in as captain. Captain Beckett was a jerk.

Beckett spoke down to everyone. He annoyed Maya for no reason and he was also a crappy captain. Beckett and the team were working the Phoenix Fair-like other firefighters. Except Beckett left the door to the rig unlocked and turned out to be important. The team was treating all onsite injuries when they got a call about a guy using his own fireworks. The guy’s name is Brad. Brad was messing around with fireworks while on something and he was leaning over it when he set it off. He blew off half his face. The team was treating him when one of Brad’s friends thought he was helping by stealing the rig (which he wouldn’t have been able to do if it wasn’t unlocked) and later crashing rig. And stopping all forms of traffic.

The traffic was so heavy that the ambulance couldn’t get through. Ben and Sullivan were stuck in traffic. The rig meanwhile was leaking fluid and no one realized it until Station 23 was called. Andy spotted the fuel leak. She thought they should clear the area and Captain Beckett who outranked her thought differently. Beckett had his team to rope off the area so that civilians couldn’t interfere and then he ordered Maya to go into the vehicle. Sullivan thought that was unfair. He tried to speak up against Beckett and Beckett almost sent him into the vehicle instead. It was Andy who volunteered to go with Maya. They were on top of the thing when a fire thrower accidentally a torch too close to the leak and the rig exploded. It could have killed the firefighters. It could have also killed the drunk civilian that stole it and the people that were helping him get out of the vehicle.

Beckett’s call was reckless. He was reckless. Sullivan betrayed Maya and incidentally installed a fool in her place. The team ended up losing their rig. The same rig that’s been with them through everything and that still bears Andy’s father’s name on it. Andy had been teary-eyed watching it burn. Beckett didn’t seem to care. Beckett spoke with Sullivan and Sullivan said he doesn’t understand how Beckett go the job over her. Beckett asks “Bishop?”. Sullivan says “No, Andy”. Andy was a lieutenant when Maya was demoted and Station 19 was her house. Under normal circumstances, she would have been tapped to become the next captain and instead, she was transferred to a different house where she didn’t whole the second-highest rank at the station.

Sullivan created more problems to solve. He also never apologized until after the rig exploded and he realized how much of a mistake he made. He said sorry. Maya thanked him and the team moved on. Miller talked about the program he set up with first responders to respond to nonviolent emergency calls. He set it up with the money he won from his lawsuit against the police department and he was hoping that city would see how well it was and would continue it after his own grant was done. Miller talked about the program to Vic but he failed to tell her that he’s in love with her and she went on to fall in love with her new boyfriend Theo.

Sullivan also heard back from Andy. She had been waiting to see if he would change or realize his mistake and he realized just a little too late for her or their marriage. She’s filing for divorce. She knows now that she doesn’t have to stay married to a man she doesn’t respect.
