In tonight’s episode of The Resident, New intern, Leela, arrives at Chastain, Jessica welcomes her. Leela tells her the hospital where she was shut down. It is also Nic’s first day back at Chastain and she is excited to be back. A man is coming into ER, a 31-year old jail inmate that was involved in a riot, he was involved in a beating and has extensive damage to his chest and abdomen. Devon is trying to calm him down with Irving, but the man is shouting “get off of me.”
Nic turns to Conrad and tells him that that is the man who stabbed her. Conrad tells her that he is taking the day off to be with her, she doesn’t need this trigger. Nic tells him to relax, she doesn’t even work on the same floor, she will be fine. Conrad says he wants to kill him with his bare hands, but he won’t. Nic heads upstairs and promises Conrad that she will be fine.
Devon looks at Conrad and tells him to stay clear. Another patient is coming in when a bride comes in, she was pushed down the stairs and the bone is sticking out of her leg.
Leela does a good job updating AJ on the patients, he is really impressed with her.
Irving and Conrad are with the bride, she has Huntington’s disease, she says that is probably the real reason why she fell. She says her father had the same disease. Randolph and Kitt come in and tell her she is going into the ER, she also has fluid in her abdomen, but they will fix that too.
It is patient appreciation day, Cain is up and he is in Chastain for physical therapy. Meanwhile, Mina is with AJ outside, she says her lawyer wants more proof of her medical training in Nigeria. AJ just tells her to give them what they want. Mina is worried if she doesn’t get the information in time, she will be deported. In the hospital, Billie has stayed for another day given it is Nic’s first day in the hospital and she saw her attacker, she goes to the cafeteria to grab a coffee and when she gets back, Jessica tells her that Nic went downstairs just after her.
Billie is frantic, she leaves the coffee and goes to look for Nic. We see Nic, she is outside her attacker’s room. He gets violent with his nurse, Leela, Nic, and Devon rush into the room. Billie arrives, she tells Nic to get away, she will help. Leela is having trouble preparing a needle and Billie takes over and injects the guy, Devon tells her that is illegal, she doesn’t have privileges there.
Billie leaves with Nic, Devon finds that the man has fluid around his heart and they didn’t notice it when he came in. AJ shows up, he is doing an ultrasound on the man’s heart, he gets mad at Leela when she is apprehensive to push on the man’s chest when doing in the ultrasound. AJ tells Devon that Leela fooled him during rounds, he thought she was going to be a star.
Conrad shows up, he is not happy that Nic went into the man’s room, she tells him that she was fine and she is going back to her patients.
Nadine calls Devon, she is in Atlanta and would love to stop by and say hello, he says yes. She says she has a surprise for him and will see him later.
In surgery, the bride is in surgery, Randolph says he saw Cain in Chastain, he tells Kit she should cut him loose, he is more trouble than he’s worth.
Cain is in PT and gets frustrated when he can’t grab some building blocks. He tells his therapist he is not going to do it again, he is not a toddler. Kitt walks up and asks Cain if there is a problem. Cain just has a bad attitude. Kitt goes over to see Rose, she is one of her favorite patients and she has sickle cell disease. Kitt tells Cain that she wants to see him in her office when he is done.
Billie asks Nic why she went to see the guy in his room. Nic says she is still having nightmares and it helps to see him broken and weak. Bille tells her a story about how she was raped when she was thirteen, she was ashamed, but eventually, she broke his hold of her and that is what Nic needs to do, she can’t give him control.
Irving tells Jessica they should make their wedding the best ever. All of a sudden, the bride is out of surgery and she is coughing up blood, Irving shouts to call Conrad, she is having a GI bleed. Conrad comes into the room, Randolph is there, and they stabilize her, but they need to find the source of the bleed.
Conrad and Randolph are working on the bride, Randolph found where the bleed was coming from, he says she probably has sclerosis.
Cain is still in the PT room, Rose comes in and she tells him that it is impressive what he is doing, to try and use his hand. They start talking about what each other are going through, she tells him that he will cut again, and she dances again. He says she has a harder road, good luck with that. Then, he says that patients need to be honest with themselves about the prognosis, and only then can they truly plan for what the future holds. She says that is a good point, and based on what she saw this morning, he will likely never operate again, and he is honest with himself about that, then she says good luck with that.
Conrad goes in to see Megan, the bride and he tells her that he is trying to figure out why she has sclerosis of the liver. He asks her about Huntingtins, she tells him about the symptoms. He asks her if the Huntingtins were ever confirmed by a doctor, she says no. Conrad leaves to run some more tests.
The convict is in surgery, AJ asks Mina how she feels about saving the man who tried to kill Nic. Mina says once they are in surgery, they are just patients. Mina gets a call from someone at the medical board, while Leela asks AJ if she can scrub in. AJ tells Mina to go, he will handle this. He turns to Leela and tells her it is her lucky day, go scrub in.
Conrad asks Nic how she is, she says she is doing better. He says he is not great; he doesn’t know what to do with the anger, he wants to kill the guy who hurt her. She says they have each other and the baby, the man will spend the rest of life in jail.
Mina meets with the medical board person, he tells her he has a few questions. First, is about a patient, if she was romantically involved with. Then, if she is involved with AJ, then if she runs a medical office in her room. Mina tells him that she wants to speak to her lawyer.
Cain is on his way into Kitt’s office, he is walking with a cane and makes his way there. She tells him to sit down, he does. She tells him that his road to recovery is going to be long and hard, and she is going to start interviewing for a neurosurgeon to replace him. It is not just his physical injury, it is his attitude, and at this moment she sees no place for him there. Cain leaves her office and goes to the washroom, once inside, he locks the door and looks himself in the mirror, drops the cane. He is angry, he starts to cry.
Nic introduces Billie to Kitt, the two go walking together. Kitt tells her there is a good and bad in her past, but the good is very good. Kitt says her neurosurgery department is suffering, she would like to reinstate her residency on a temporary trial basis. If everything works out, she will have a new home at Chastain.
Mina tells AJ that she is under investigation for running a clinic in her home, dating a patient and him. She could lose her medical license, she doesn’t know what is worse, being deported, or losing her medical license.
Devon goes to see Leela talk to her, he tells her that he was hard on her and it is his job to help her. He tells her that he knows she is dyslexic, he had a friend who was and recognized the signs. She says she arrives hours before to prepare. The only reason she is there is that her mentor got Dr. Voss to give her a chance. She tells him that she doesn’t want to be treated differently, she wants to be treated like all the residents.
Nadine is in the hospital, she has a baby with her and Devon is worried, is that his son.
AJ meets up with Cain and tells him that he put in a mood that is a special kind of pissed off. He tells him that ruining Mina’s career will not help him, it will just sink him to a new low. Cain says she tried to destroy him. AJ says he is destroying her for the wrong reasons. AJ tells him to fix it now, or he is coming for him. AJ gets right up in Cain’s face and says “and you won’t walk away from me ever.”
Cain is in his apartment, he calls Moises Knoll and tells him to ease up on Mina, drop the whole thing. Moises tells him he is sorry, it is out of his hands, it is a moving train that cannot be stopped now.
