In tonight’s episode of The Voice, the episode begins with our coaches coming out, John Legend, Nick Jonas, Blake Shelton, and sitting in for Kelly Clarkson during the Battles because she is not feeling well, is Kelsea Ballerini. Kelly is watching the Battles remotely.

The Battles begin; Kelly brought one of her favorite people, Luis Fonsi as ger advisor for Team Kelly. The first battle is Ryleigh Modig against Gean Garcia and they are singing, “POV” by Ariana Grande.

Coaches Comments: Blake: “If Kelly was here I would tell her, why did you pair these two together, it’s awful, what is she doing. Gene, I have never seen anyone perform the way you do, so intense like you are performing from another dimension, I don’t know what is happening to you physically when you are singing, but it is cool to see. Riley, we sit here in these chairs season after season and wait for someone to no sound like anybody else and you are that artist, you keep it real and fresh. I would probably go with Gene because I don’t know what is going on with you and I want to see some more of it.” Nick: “Riley, your voice is just magical to listen to and I am so frustrated that we didn’t get to work together. As a songwriter, you are the kind of artist I would write songs for and with. Gene, you tap into something else, it’s like you are a matrix in a different world and you can’t coach that.

I would say that you Kelsea have the hardest job today stepping in for Kelly.” John: “I realize that I didn’t turn for either of you and starting to question myself as a human being. Both of you have really unique approaches and unique voices, Gene opens up your vowels a little more, but your range is so cool. I felt that Riley gave a slightly better performance today, this is a tough decision.” Kelsea: “Kelly is so sad that she can’t see this in person and I’m so stoked that I can. Gene, there was a little pitch issue in the beginning and you corrected it. Riley, I can hear parts of your story in the way that you sing and it just makes me buy your record. Since I am keeping the seat warm for Kelly, I am going to call her.”

The winner of this battle is Riley. Gene is available to steal and both John and Nick hit their buttons. Gene chooses John.

Time for Team Blake to battle, he has brought in Dan & Shay as his advisors. Connor Christian and Aaron Konzelman will battle it out singing, “Ain’t Living Long Like This,” by Waylon Jennings.

Coaches Comments: Nick: “That was a barn burner for sure, I think it was good coaching that put you guys against each other, so Blake well done. Connor your rasp is kind of an identifier for you, I think it is what will set you apart, you clearly have fun performing. Aaron, there was real professional qualities in the way you approached the vocal on this song and I really appreciate that you were swinging from the fences. I felt like it was very even, both you guys, great job.” John: “I really had a fun time listening to the whole thing.

Aaron’s voice was a little more electric to me and it felt like it was more suited to this particular song, but there is something cool about your voice Connor. I was thinking what it would be like if you were to just sing a stripped-down ballad with just you and a guitar and I’m more intrigued by the possibility of what more you could do. It’s a tough decision.” Kelsea: “I can’t believe I am going to say it, but that song was perfect. Aaron, you were able to bring this rough smoky tone with your acoustic and jam out. Connor when you were singing, you were acting like you were solo by yourself on stage in a concert.” Blake: “Aaron, I don’t know how you manage to do anything else when you are so good at this. Connor, once you are in the zone, nobody can get you out of there.”

The winner of this battle is Connor. Aaron is available to steal, but nobody hits their buttons.

Team Nick is up to the battle, he has brought Darren Criss in as his advisor. Dana Monique and Devan Blake Jones battle it out singing, “Stuck On U,” by Ariana Grande and Justin Bieber.

Coaches Comments: Blake: “Devan if I had to pick a winner off of badass jackets, that was a knockout. I thought you did a good job of stepping up to the plate, I thought it made you better, and I really can’t pick it apart. The only thing I can say is, it’s Dana, and her voice is just so powerful and so complete I would pick Dana at this moment, I think she is incredible and long overdue for a moment like this.” John: “Devan, I really think you are a great vocalist, you have so much fire, my only concern is that there were a few accuracy issues when it came to the pitch. Dana, you looked natural up there, when it came to execution you were on point the whole time.”

Kelsea: “I totally forgot that I was supposed to be taking mental notes, I was just enjoying it. Dana, you just exude so much confidence that it is hard to look away from you. I am just a fan. Devan, your flip to falsetto was magical when you did it. When you flip up to your head voice it’s special. I am no even going to pretend that I could pick between you two.” Nick: “Dana, there is something magical about your voice and your presence on stage and there is a joy that surrounds you. You made the working environment so much more fun to be in, which is the highest compliment I could give you. Devan, you came and you worked your butt off, it was a tough battle. I feel like a mishandled this pairing and I am kicking myself for it because you really are a great vocalist, and you are wearing a great jacket. I think you should be really proud of this performance.”

The winner of this battle is Dana. Devan is available to steal, Nick saves him.

Team john is up and he has brought Brandy in as an advisor for Christine Cain and Pia Renee when they sing Brandy’s song, “Baby.”

Coaches Comments: Kelsea: “I feel like I just watched a sass off. Both of you look amazing, you look like I have it together, I am ready to go, and I think as a woman in music it is important to know yourself like that and I see that in both of you as well and that is really amazing. Pia, the way you navigated that stage, you are meant to be here, thank you for showing up with what you are meant to do with your life. Christine, I just saw two seconds when you got in your head, I encourage you to be really mindful of those moments, get out of the head, and back on the stage. I am a fan of both of you, I hate picking.”

Blake: “Christine, you are such a good singer but at times I felt like you were so laid back and it goes to Pia and she explodes with these vocal moments that really hit the mark. For that reason, I think I would go with Pia.” Nick: “I actually wrote down explosive, where cheating and looking, Blake? Christine, I get the sense that you have been singing a long time, you are singing like you have been singing like twenty years. Pia, you have this natural thing, your first tone sets the stage for the whole song and you have a good chance of winning.” John: “Christine, the way you are so laid back it felt almost like that was the way you are supposed to sing it. It was a little less than what was needed. Pia, you rose to the occasion.”

The winner of this battle is Pia. Christine is available to steal, but nobody hits their button.

Team Nick is back with Darren Chriss and this battle is between Jose Figueroa Jr. and Awari, they will be singing, “You Say,” by Lauren Daigle.

Coaches Comments: John: “This is genuinely a tough decision Nick Jonas. I feel like your voice Jose was a little more fluid and a little more effortless. Awari I love how strong and solid your voice is. Nick, I might very slightly edge towards Awari and I’m not even sure about that, it’s very close.” Kelsea: “I’ll be honest Awari as soon as you opened your mouth, wow. Your tone is crazy, and your range is beautiful. Jose, the runs that you were doing was so impressive to me, I can’t wait to hear you tone it back and drop one and let me simmer on it for a minute. You are both incredible and so worthy of my saying you both should win, so I’m not saying.” Blake: “Awari you are not letting out a bunch of tricks you are just letting the rawness of your voice be the strength of your voice. And the other side of that is Jose, Kelsea is talking about all these runs and crazy things that you can do, I can’t relate to that ability, and I know you guys are all super surprised that I don’t throughout a lot of runs when I am singing. I think I agree with Kelsea, a little bit goes a long way. I think it is an easier thing to dial back and for that reason, I would go with Jose.” Nick: “I thought the performance was phenomenal, I’ll be honest I think some of the nerves got to the both of you and I could feel that. When you both finally opened up and allowed yourselves to be free in this song, it brought me to church, and it was a really beautiful thing. Awari, it is so incredible to see how willing you are to jump in when you are in a competitive setting, to cheer on your teammate, knowing you are going head to head in this battle is admirable. Thank you for that. Jose you have the ability to hit your runs with precision, you are out here swinging from the fences, I like that passion, I have a tough choice.”

The winner of this battle is Jose. Awari was available to steal but nobody hit their buttons.

The last battle of the night is on Team Blake with their advisors Dan & Shay, Ethan Lively, and Avery Robinson will battle out while they sing, “Just Got Started Lovin’ You,” by James Otto.

Coaches Comments: Nick: “You just made me feel like I have the highest voice in the world, I can’t even get close to that, I feel like half a man. Really impressive performance from both of you, I was imagining that I was at Billy Bob’s in Fort Worth, Texas, drinking a beer. I don’t know who I would pick. I would go with Avery in this choice.” John: “I felt like it was inviting, the performance. This song did have that low note and I felt like Ethan has that robust low tone. It is amazing to me that Ethan is only seventeen. I think at this moment, Ethan did a little bit better, but this song played to his strengths.” Kelsea: “First things first, we got to get John honkey talking at some point, my new personal life goal. Second of all, I feel like I got serenaded, I’m blushing. I really enjoyed it and it made me want to go down to Broadway and have a drink and that in itself is country music.” Blake: “It is a tough song, it pushes you up there as much as it pushes you down there, for me anyway. Ethan, you made Nick half the man, you made him jealous. Avery, you came in high demand, you had all four coaches want you. I say you come alive up there.

The winner of this battle is Ethan. Avery is available to steal and Kelsea hits her button on behalf of Kelly.

THE END!
