Gabe’s tooth was killing him. He originally thought he would have to fix it before he went to Alaska, but then the pain subsided and he felt well enough to go. He’s now in Alaska only his tooth is hurting again. Gabe told his siblings that the tooth might need to be removed. He misspoke by saying teeth instead of the tooth and so they all joked about him being toothless. But the pain did eventually go away long enough for Gabe to focus on the objective. They didn’t go to Alaska for fun. They went because Noah wants to move there with his own family and he wants his kids to grow up loving Alaska as much as he does.

Noah’s siblings wanted to help him find a home. But it wasn’t without risk. They had to take their boat through the wrangle narrow which was a winding shallow river off the coast of Alaska and it was littered with boats that were abandoned. It would be dangerous to take the boat through it yet that’s what they planned on doing right up until Gabe had to pull out of the trip with them. Gabe’s tooth pain came back. It was killing him so much that he went to a local dentist. They removed the tooth because it was broken. Gabe had to play catch-up with the rest of the siblings. Bird, Rhain, and Noah with his son had to go through the narrows on their own.

Gabe was going to be joining them later by taking a smaller boat through the narrows. The smaller boat was actually safer than taking the big boat like the other siblings were doing. They were on the family boat which was quite large. They had to worry about the current pushing against the boat. They all tried to play a part in steering and Rhain told them she got this. She was the captain. She felt only God or her daddy could tell her what to do. Her siblings were neither of these things and so they didn’t get a say. Rhain was doing her best to navigate when another crew member began feeling unwell.

This time it was little Eli. The toddler had a fever. Only he didn’t feel hot. He felt cold and was covered under the blankets and he was refusing to even eat his favorite snack. Eli was sick. His father thankfully had some medicine on him and Gabe eventually rejoined them. No sooner were they reunited that they ran into some ugly weather. It was raining. It was windy. The weather was so bad that some of them began feeling the boat turn sideways. Rhain had to hand over the boat to Gabe because she felt sick. Then she was sick. With Rhain feeling unwell, she started having conversations with her father in heaven.

Rhain asked her dad for help. She asked him to act as a guardian angel and help them get through the choppy narrows. She, Bird, and Gabe were doing everything they could to get through the narrows. It was just Noah who wasn’t running around trying to figure out what to do. Noah had a more pressing concern with his sick son. Noah stayed with Eli down below. He made sure his son wasn’t scared about the choppy waters. He made up stories for his son and they spent that time together. Eli has been a good sport throughout the Alaska trip. He was excited about fishing. He asked questions all the time and when he’s feeling better – he’ll have amazing memories of Alaska.

Eli was having a better time than his Aunt Bird. Bird agreed to go to Alaska because she was hoping to feel her father’s presence there and she wanted his help to make a decision. Bird was recently confronted with the possibility of never carrying her own baby one day. She now has to make a decision if she wants to wait till she has a family or if she wants to go ahead with removing her ovaries now. Bird was hoping her father could guide her through the decision. She went to Alaska to feel closer to him. She even brought along a letter from her mother that she was supposed to read in Alaska. And so Bird was supposed to make a decision there.

But making a decision there was so hard for her. She looked for signs from her dad in every corner. She got lucky when she found one. She saw an Eagle on the beach. The eagles were very important to Billy Brown. He considered them to be his spirit animal. So, finding one at least gave Bird some measure of peace while she was there. They finally arrived at the Mosman. It’s this island off the coast of Alaska that convinced the siblings’ parents to love Alaska and to settle there with their family. Bird visited the island. She walked around imagining what was there when her parents first visited it forty years ago. She also read Ami’s letter there.

The letter helped bring some things g to light. It made Bird cry. She also realized that while she grew up living day to day that her health is now forcing her into making five-year plans. And she plans on having her own child.

Bird wasn’t going to go through with removing ovaries and she was willing to accept the risk of having her tumors grow back.

The End
