Tonight’s episode begins with the return of the three judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan.

The first contestant tonight is Betty Maxwell, she is Miss America 2016. She absolutely didn’t think she was going to win, she had a sinus infection that impacted her singing. She has been singing since the age of three and her dream is to be the voice of a Disney princess. She has her crown with her and she says the rule is that the judges can’t try it on, which is killing Katy who is dying to put it on. Katy asks Betty the real question, will she be the next miss American Idol. Betty is singing “A moment like this,” by Kelly Clarkson. Then she sings “Jesus Take The Wheel,” by Carrie Underwood.

Judges Comments: Katy: “Bring it down a little bit. Your heart is in the country. If I give you a yes, can I wear the crown?” Luke: “Most pageant girls sing like pageant girls, you don’t. You sing like a singer, there is a lot to work with.” Lionel: “We have to take you down, I want you to get out of your head that you sing everything.”

Three yes votes from the judges.

Leah Marlene started singing country music at a young age. Her plan is to go and not trip. She is singing, “Steal My Girl” from One Direction.

Judges Comments: Katy: “You got a tremendous voice, gosh I want to hear another one. Share an original with us. You remind me of Katy Turner. You are super fun, super quirky, and super weird. You got a lot of talent.” Luke: “You are amazing, there is nothing about you that we are going to be able to predict.” Lionel: “You carry your strangeness so well, you are so comfortable with yourself.”

Three yes votes from the judges.

Mike Parker, growing up, his parents were in a band and people still talk about it to this day. His mother is not feeling well and he is worried, she has leukemia. His parents tell him via video that they are always with him. He tells them that he is ready to go. Mike is singing “Strawberry Wine,” by Deana Carter.

Judges Comments: Katy: “If I say top 24 will you lean into that?” Luke: “You gave me chills. You just need to deliver it silky. I think you are a country singer, you have the potential to be truly amazing.” Lionel: “Simplicity is king, you don’t have to worry about runs or rips, the texture in your voice is gold. You have all the goods to make it happen. This is your inspiring moment, run with it.” Lionel gets up and hugs him.

Three yes votes from the judges.

Kelsie Dolan lost her grandma last year from COVID who was raising her. She is very shy and stepping out of her comfort zone is nerve-racking, but she is doing this for her grandma. She is singing “Piece By Piece,” by Kelly Clarkson. Katy asks her to sing another song and gives her a standing ovation.

Judges Comments: Katy: “You are very special, I hope you can trust us. There is more there.” Luke: “Have you ever performed (no) you just survived. You hit zero bad notes. We are so emotional because you have this pure beautiful voice that has never been challenged.” Lionel: “If we can let you know how beautiful you are.”

Three yes votes from the judges.

Skylie Thompson is from a really small town and this is a dream, she never thought she would be there. Her dad, Davie, is with her and he says that he is really proud of her. He tells her to show and just be her. She sings a little more of country, her dad is playing the guitar for her.

Judges Comments: Katy: “Your original song was well written. Your voice is young. It is a no not yet for me.” Luke: “You have a young voice, on some notes you don’t complete them all. You are not just ready, but I give you a yes because you don’t deserve three no votes.” Lionel: “You are not suffering from personality. You need to go back in and work on this voice, you don’t need voice lessons, you just need to practice. This is just the beginning.”

Skylie does not move forward.

Luke Taylor has a deep voice, the judges are loving it, he is a sophomore in university. He is going to sing “Ring Of Fire,” by Johnny Cash.

Judges Scores: Katy: “You just need to have other notes, I want to hear Christmas songs forever from you. But in the competition, you have to use other notes or it’s just impractical.” Luke: “You are going to Hollywood if I have to take you there. Please sing Frost the Snowman for me. This has been as fun as hell. It’s a yes for me.” Lionel: “If you pick the right songs it will be oh my gosh.”

Three yes votes from the judges.

Kenedi Anderson is never in one place for a long time because her father is in the football industry. But having a big family helps a lot. All of her family is athletic, but she is musical. She feels there is no better time to audition. Kennedy is singing “Applause” by Lady Gaga. She gets a standing ovation from the judges.

Judges Comments: Katy: “I am feeling threatened. I don’t know how you haven’t been recruited. You check every box and a lot of them. Get ready to become your own hero.” Luke: “My head is spinning. You must be the biggest star we have ever seen, top 10. Your musical journey for the rest of your life starts now. Bring out your mother: your second-born has blown our minds. There is a ticket upgrade, we have a superstar here. The platinum ticket, you get to move ahead of Hollywood week.” Lionel: “We are looking for the next thing, you are it, you have answered our prayers.”

Kenedi receives the platinum ticket to Hollywood.

Aaron Westbury sang once for a girl, he sent her a video and she liked it. He works at a grocery store stocking produce. He is going to sing “2016” by Sam Hunt, while he is playing the piano.

Judges Comments: Katy: “Your voices make us melt, it doesn’t have this crazy range, it doesn’t need it. Maybe the most moved I have been all day. It is going to be interesting.” Luke: “You have a heartbreak tone, it pulls us in. You do that with that tone you just gave us. Your delivery is up there with James Taylor. You’re so raw. You are like walking melatonin.” Lionel: “Do you have a passion for the produce section? Do you really want to be on American Idol? I am going to invest in you.”

Three yes votes from the judges.

Allegra Miles is singing “Royals” by Lorde and playing the piano.

Judges Comments: Katy: “Did you teach him to sing like that? Voice of gold, the heart of gold, and ticket is gold.” Luke: “He is touched by the hands from upstairs who give people voices, we haven’t seen it naturally yet until now. My heart is filled with excitement.” Lionel: “We found him. Bring your mother in here.

Judges Comments: Katy: “How dare you? You sang with such elegance and grace. It’s like you reinvented the song. Your heart is shining through your vocal cords.” Luke: “It just flows, it is tremendous and honest. It is magic.” Lionel: “I am so proud. You are here for a purpose.
