Tonight’s American Idol episode begins with the return of judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan who get a visit from bassist and songwriter Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue.

Ryan Seacrest surprises Nadia’s (Idol season 4 top ten) daughter, Zareh who sings “Bust The Windows” by Jasmine Sullivan. Zareh is wearing the same top her mother worse during her Idol audition.

Judges Comments: Katy: “You have a lot of things going for you, you have a full voice and you could be a real artist.” Lionel: “If you could see your mother when you are singing, she is crying and girating. Mom was blowing up with pride.” Luke: “You killed that song, in your zone, you are tremendous.

Three yes votes to Hollywood.

Thomas Patrick Moran says he is grateful to be there. He is going to sing, “Chain of Fools,” by Aretha Franklin.

Judges Comments: Katy: “I disagree. I was like you when I auditioned. I give you a yes.” Lionel: “You are a natural born performer. You and Hollywood week would be a hilarious, it is a yes vote from me.” Luke: “I’ve enjoyed you having fun. You do have a singing voice, but you have a bigger personality. I’m a no.”

Two yes votes, he is going to Hollywood.

Lydia Samuel is shown quickly, she doesn’t make it through. Also, Sam Moss, was a no.

Sam Moss is back, she says this is her redemption story. She came back to show who she really is. In Austin, the audition went ok but she was really disappointed in herself. This time she is singing something that is more personal, a song that she wrote. Katy starts by giving her a big hug. Katy says she deserves a second chance. Luke tells Katy that she is not always right. Her performance garners a standing ovation from all the judges.

Judges Comments: Luke: “Thank God you got so much better in such a short of time.” Lionel: “We put the yes on Sam. I was wrong.” Katy: “That original song, you should have sang it at first. It was the best original song we have heard this season.”

Three yes votes from the judges

Kenzie Elizabeth is with her grandmother, Susie. Music is her life, it always. She graduated high school when she was fifteen and a half. She is singing, “I’m With You,” by Avri Lavigne.

Judges Comments: Katy: “I have never heard that song delivered with such passion. I think you are all Broadway. Embrace who you are, you are theatre.” Lionel: “You went into character and you were there.” Luke: “For American Idol right now, it is a no from me.”

The no votes, Kenzie is not going to Hollywood.

Fritz Hager is a security officer, he sits in a dark room twelve hours a day working. He was really inspired by Phillip Phillips. He is singing, “Before You Go.” Fritz gets a surprise message from Phillip Phillips wishing him good luck before his audition.

Judges Comments: Katy: “The chorus was pretty good, it has a lot of potential. You need to find yourself in the first part. I think when you are around other singers, you are going to do well. It’s a yes.” Lionel: “I agree with Katy, it’s a yes for me, you can do it.” Luke: “You need a little more growth, more work, it’s a no.”

Two votes yes, one no, Fritz is going to Hollywood.

Kevin Gulllage’s biggest inspiration is William Hung. Kevin takes to the piano, he has no formal training, but knows how to belt it out. A standing ovation from the judges.

Jusges Comments: Katy: “That was crazy, that voice.”Lionel: “You have so much flavor.” Luke: “I love your smile, you look like someone anyone can talk to.”

Three yes votes and he is going to Hollywood.

Charvonay

Judges Comments:Katie: “You have a superstar personality but not superstar vocals. It’s a no for me.” Lionel: “It’s a no for me.” Luke: “It’s a no for me.”

Charvonay is not going to Hollywood

In Los Angeles, interviews continue and there are a lot no votes, so the contestants are getting really nervous.

Jacob Moran is a nurse, he made it through last time but since, has lost over 60 pounds and came back more confident. He is going to sing, “Rise” by Katy Perry. He says this can go one of two ways. Katy gives him a standing ovation.

Judges Comments: Katy: “Wow, when you think the final nail is in, think again. You kept fighting, you did the right song, you did it justice. Those words were your words, you have arrived.” Lionel: “Have way through the performance I wrote yes. You should really feel good about yourself.” Luke: “I wrote yes already.”

Haley Slaton is five and a half months pregnant, she is having a boy. She is singing, “The Climb,” by Miley Cyrus. Then she sings, “One And Only” by Adele.

Judges Comments: Katy: “I think there is a lot there, so much pressure. We are not sure. This is going to be a lot, are you ready for it. You are going through a life change, give that and more every single time. Yes mama.” Lionel: “Holding a note might be quite difficult being pregnant. For you are little Smoky, yes.” Luke: “It wasn’t a perfect audtion, but there were some perfect moments. Yes mama.”

The yes votes from the judges.

Elli Rowe, her parents had a blue grass band growing up. She is singing “Baby Blue.” Lionel gives her a standing ovation.

Judges Comments:

Katy: “You’ve got levels, you got a real commercial voice. It’s very sweet, pleasing and nice to listen to it. It’s a fight to the finish, people with big voices. Pick the right songs.” Lionel: “You are the postar child for melody is king.” Luke: “You are going to Hollywood. Dig in a little more, do it.”

Three yes vote gets her to Hollywood.

Daniel Marshall Griffith was a football player at one time. He started live performances five months ago, he is really shy. He posts videos on TikTok and some of them have gone viral. He is going to sing “The Dance” by Garth Brooks.

Judges Comments: Katy: “I do think you have some natural born talent. All you need is support and a little guidance.” Lionel: “You have that story telling thing. There is something you cannot teach, natural talent.” Luke: “Your playing the guitar may be taking away from your singing. You are one of the best sounding country singers coming through, but the emotion is not there.”

Three yes votes get him to Hollywood.

Douglas Mills is from Texas, he got a VIP affiliate pass to American Idol. When he was younger he was bullied because he looked different. It was very painful. Still today, it is hard for him to love himself, but he loves singing. He is singing, “Strange Fruit.” A standing ovation from the judges. They go forward and give him a group hug.

Judges Comments: Lionel: “That was superb. You are off the charts.” Katy: “You are a superstar, you froze the room. That was iconic.” Luke: “You took us on a journey, you controlled every second of that.”

Douglas is going to Hollywood.
