Tonight’s Animal Kingdom episode begins with Julia and a friend, they go back to Smurf’s place and Rob’s her, which includes taking some of her clothes and Andrew’s meds. Andrew is in the garage, he hears a noise and goes to check it out. He barricades Julia in a room and punches the guy in the face.
Present day, Pope is on the transfer bus while Deran and Craig race down a dirt road on dune buggies, their plan in motion to break out Pope. Meanwhile, J is in his car and he messages someone, it is Deran and he tells him 2 minutes. J sees the bus pass him, spins around, and follows it. Craig tells Deran, one car is behind the bus with two cops. J turns around and goes the other way. In the bus, Pope tells the driver he has to go to the bathroom. All of a sudden, spiked that Craig and Deran planted on the highway, stops the bus and it spins out, the cop car as well.
Deran and Craig are wondering where J is. They subdue the cops but inside the bus, Pope and another inmate are getting into a scuffle. The driver tries to get out of the bus and runs, then gets shot. Deran and Craig are trying to break the door down to the bus, Pope is getting strangled but not for long. Pope takes control, they get him out.
Pope is full of blood but he is ok, Deran and Craig tell him that J didn’t show up. Meanwhile, J messages them and says “got heat.” Deran, Craig and Pope take off on the dune buggies, J is driving down the highway.
Surf arrives home and sees Andrew, he says Julia broke in, Smurf says she must be desperate. Andrew says he locked her in the bathroom, she is pregnant and strung out.
J is back at the house, he cleans up and puts away the trash, then turns on the TV and listens to the news about the transport bus. J is watching his GPS, he knows exactly where the Cody brothers are.
Pope asks again where is J and Deran tells him that he had heat.
J calls the tip line regarding the overturned bus, then smashes the cell phone he used for the call.
Baz walks in to see Smurf and gives her money, he hears a scream and she says Julia stopped by, she is in the bathroom strung out and pregnant. She gives him a sandwich for her and says to see if she will eat it. Baz unlocks the door and finds Julia laying on the floor, he gives her the sandwich. She asks him if that is it, he walks out and closes the door, she is crying on the floor.
The Cody brothers decide to walk down the hill and get the cars, they need them to get over the border.
Penny arrives to see J, she brought two bags. He says they are leaving later that night. He tells her to go swim, and relax, he will finish the packing. J is in the room and he is packing, a lot of cash and guns. He looks over at a photo of Julia in the mirror, he takes it, and puts it in his bag.
Pope cuts the transmitter out of his side. Craig tries to call J but keeps getting his answering machine. He heads inside of the containers and sees there are no guns, then they discover there is no money, and the cars all have flat tires.
The Cody brothers make a run for it. J gets a call on the house phone, and the sheriff’s department arrives and wants to come in. J goes to get Penny and tells her to come with him. The sheriff’s car pulls up to the driveway. The officers tell J that Pope broke out and they ask to look around. Penny gives J an alibi.
The brothers hear the sirens and know they have canine units, they start running faster. They make their way to a homestead in the desert and smash the windows to get in. Once inside, they see the cops coming their way and there are a lot of them. Deran says it is his fault, he trusted J. Pope says they all did.
Back to Andrew and Julia, she had a shower and asks if Smurf threw out her stuff, he says yes, last year. Andrew asks if the guy she broke in with is the dad, but she doesn’t answer, then he asks if Baz is the dad and she says maybe, but she doesn’t know who the dad is. She tells him it’s a boy and he says Smurf says it is time for her to come out.
Deran is starting to freak, Pope has a plan, he wants to hold them off, so they can run. Pope tells them they are going to be alright and he hugs them, he says he will come to find them.
Penny asks J why he made her lie to them. He says his uncles are not coming back, he knew what they were planning and he called the police. She says she thinks maybe he should go without her. He asks her if she loves him and she says of course but she doesn’t think she should go. He asks her to wait with him at least until he has to leave and she says yes.
Julia goes outside to the pool where Smurf is, and she thanks her. Craig tells her that she can’t have her room back and Smurf says Julia is not staying. Smurf takes out twenty dollars to give to Julia and tells her good luck. Andrew tells Smurf that Julia needs help and the baby. Julia says she will go to rehab, she will make it work for the baby, she says please.
J makes a drink for Penny and laces it with a drug. She tells him that she really is sorry, and he says he is too. She says she got swept up, she won’t tell anyone.
Pope opens the front door and he starts shooting. Deran and Craig try to get away on a motorcycle. Pope shoots all the cops, but there are more coming, he takes one of their cars and speeds off.
Pope stops to reload, a mean is coming to the other way and stops. Pope tells him to get out and steals his car. Kody and Deran arrive at a convenience store, they need cash and a first aid kit. A boy comes out with a gun, and the man behind the counter begs Deran not to shoot him.
J reaches over to Penny, he checks for a pulse and she is dead, he killed her. He goes down on his knees beside her and hugs her. J then goes inside the house and starts destroying I with a baseball bat. Pope jumps the wall and he can hear the noise inside, he sees Penny dead on the chair. Pope hobbles into the house, he sees J and he jumps him and starts strangling him.
Back to Smurf, she is driving and has Andrew and Julie in the car with her. Julie tells Andrew she wants to call her baby Josh, J for short.
J wakes up and he is tied to a chair. Pope tells him that he can’t listen to any more lies, they trusted him and made him part of the family and he set them up to die, his brothers. J says he deserved it, all of them, for what they did to his mom. Then he tells Pope he could have saved her, and Pope pushes him into the pool.
Smurf brings Julia back to the homeless, she tells Andrew that rehab is a waste of money for her. Smurf tells her to take the twenty dollars again, it’s the only money she and her little bastard is going to get. Smurf pulls a gun on her and tells her to leave. Julia begs Andrew to go with her, she begs him and says they need her. Smurf tells him to go sit up with her, they leave Julia there.
Pope jumps into the pool and saves J before he drowns. Pope says she wanted him to be stronger than he was, pretending he was normal. She was the strong one and she loved J, she always loved him. Pope says it is all his fault. Pope tells J to go. J gets p and leaves.
Deran is driving, he tells Craig to put pressure on his wound, and he is going to be ok. Craig says he is not going to make it. Craig tells him to stop.
Pope makes it outside, he finds his picture of him and Julia when they were kids. He returns to the pool area and he imagines seeing a younger self with Smurf at the table. He goes inside and pours gasoline everywhere, takes out a lighter, and throws it on the bed. The house is quickly engulfed in flames, he takes his photo with him, sits down near the pool, falls over, and is dead. The photo falls down into the pool.
Deran pulls over, he goes to take Craig out of the vehicle, and sits him down on the ground, they are near the ocean. Deran tells him to look at the ocean, it’s beautiful. Craig says diamonds, Renn, Nick. Craig promises to take care of both of them, he won’t have to worry about a thing. Craig is dead. Deran lays down Craig, says he loves him, and walks away.
J is sitting on a chair near a pool, looks like Thailand.
