The DEA made a huge bust. They took down Danileo Kovalev. Kovalev is an international drug lord that was on the wanted list for years and so his capture was a big win for the DEA. It was even bigger for AUSA Parker Reilly. Reilly wanted to handle everything by the book. He wanted to put Kovalev and leave him for the rest of his natural-born life. But he had a problem. His only witness to Kovalev killing someone was a dirty DEA Agent. Special Agent Scott stole money from several drug busts and that includes Kovalev’s scene as well. He was dirty. He told money from drug dealers. He got caught and so they couldn’t his testimony in putting Kovalev behind bars for murder. Not unless they gave Scott immunity.
Scott demanded immunity to testify. He wants to get off for his own crimes. He doesn’t care that he’s risking a dangerous drug lord getting back out on the streets or that Kovalev will continue to kill if he’s not stopped. Scott only cared about himself. He wants to stay out of prison and so he’s dangling the only thing he could to keep his freedom. But Reilly wasn’t playing ball. Reilly refuses to use Scott to make his case and so he turned to someone he knew he could trust. He turned to Bull for help. Bull and his firm were known for winning cases. Sometimes those cases were unbeatable until TAC took over and solved everything. And so that’s what Reilly needed with this case.
Reilly needed help to win. They couldn’t use Scott. They technically only had a witness of Kovalev coming up from the basement after he murdered someone and not seeing the murder itself, but they called this witness to stand and she pretended to have dementia. She couldn’t remember meeting with Kovalev. She denied ever seeing Kovalev. She just kept saying she couldn’t recall an answer to every question and so Reilly had to treat her as a hostile witness. He pressured her. He tried to get her to crack and unfortunately it didn’t work. The witness stuck to her gun. She refused to testify against a murderer.
Reilly’s case was sinking without an eyewitness. It wasn’t helped by the fact that Reilly wanted to use Bull and not his team. Reilly wanted to rely on the DEA for online information. They hadn’t wanted to trust Taylor because of Taylor’s involvement with the hacker Zola Macer. Taylor was asked to stay out of the investigation. But she ignored this order. She and Danny kept looking for Olek. He’s the man that was with Kovalev when Kovalev murdered that man. Kovalev had even-handed Olek a gun once he was done. This means Olek was the only one who knew where the murder weapon was and getting him to flip on his boss would be the one thing to take down Kovalev’s whole empire.
But there was an issue with finding Olek. Taylor had to skirt the lines of legality and eventually she found him. She found him on his way to Scott’s house. Scott had gotten released from prison in exchange for giving testimony against Kovalev. The AUSA as well as Bull had tried making a case without Scott to no avail. They needed him. They gave him the immunity he wanted and afterward, they put him on the witness list. The guy was going through trial prep when someone shot him. They put him in a coma. With Scott being in a coma, it became more important than ever to locate Olek.
Everyone knew Kovalev ordered Scott’s shooting. They just had to prove it. Reilly and Bull tried to buy time as much as possible by delaying the judge until they had enough time to arrest Olek and unfortunately the judge was being very by the book. He was going to dismiss the case if they didn’t have Olek. So, Reilly punched the judge. It bought them time and they were later able to arrest Olek. Except Olek wasn’t talking. He refused to turn against his boss. He even implied that Scott might have shot himself in fear of what Kovalev would do to him. And so the prosecution used as the excuse to put a prerecorded message of Scott’s testimony into evidence.
Scott had taped it during trial prep. He talked of Kovalev killing people and the jury later found him guilty of murder. But Reilly was demoted for punching a judge. He said it was worth it and it did save the case.
THE END!
