Chicago Med begins tonight with Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) is bombarded by the media over the arrest of Dr Matt Cooper (Michael Rady) and Jessa Rinaldi (Angela Wong Carbone). Sharon has no comment as she hears how lawsuits are coming up against the hospital. Dr Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) is able to intervene and escort Sharon into the hospital.
Dr Stevie Hammer (Kristen Hager) is being interviewed about the Vas Com, not confirming who told her to use the Vas Com; demanding to know if one of the people promoting the Vas Com was Dr Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), cutting the questioning off. Sharon confesses to Daniel that she is worried about the hospital now that the FBI is questioning everyone. Sharon is confronted by board member Roger Flanagan (Torrey Hanson) who learned that whistle blowers like her are entitled to a reward. She brushes his comments off.
Meanwhile, Dr Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) talks with Dr Pamela Blake (Sarah Rafferty) about their current case, saying their patient only has one kidney, as he donated one to his father years ago. Marcel learns more about Luke, who is their patient’s son and if he doesn’t have the kidney disease he could be a possible donor. Blake introduces Marcel to their patient, Lawrence who is cuddling his son with autism. Blake pushes Lawrence to test Luke as Luke insists he wants to help. Blake informs Lawrence that this may be his last and final chance to get a good kidney and he agrees.
Marcel disagrees with Blake, who explains that his own father gave them the okay as Marcel is concerned about Luke’s mental capacity; Blake says they will bring it to the ethics committee and let them decide.
Dr Vanessa Taylor (Asjha Cooper) speaks briefly with Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett), but once she leaves, Doris (Lorena Diaz) questions her about keeping things so quiet. Doris wants to know who Vanessa’s father is and Maggie orders her to go turn over a bed.
Dr Dean Archer (Steven Weber) runs into Will, saying he has his back on this one and he is proud of him. Will apologizes to Stevie saying he didn’t mean for her to get caught up in this as she wonders why he didn’t give her a heads up. Maggie interrupts them, calling them in for a trauma. Their patient doesn’t speak English so his son, Emmanuel will speak for him. He explains that the past few months his dad has been acting up and now clumsy. They order several tests on him and they are allowed to bring his girlfriend into the hospital.
Sharon speaks to Will, who admits he has been better; hating putting staff in this mess. Sharon rushes off, confronting Peter Kalmick (Marc Grapey) who is shutting her out of budget meetings. He says they cannot fire her because she is the hero so the board is trying to leave her in purgatory and no speaking. Peter reveals he is out of the loop as he stood behind her. He knows the board is coming at her and he doubts it will be from head on.
Marcel learns from Blake that the ethics committee is willing to move forward with Luke as the potential donor. She orders Marcel to perform the test to see if he is even a candidate. In the meantime, Sharon is greeted by Randall at her office door. She was not expecting him, but she invites him into the office. His company provides practical guidance to hospitals. She’s impressed with his credentials as he says the board says she doesn’t mess around and they hired him to provide an era of transparency with vendors, device companies, reps and especially patients. She says this has been her mission since she started as a nurse 35 years ago, this was her goal to not have anything hidden about the hospital. Randall reminds her that Med is in trouble and if it gets worse, the patients will suffer. She agrees to take him at his word. Randall makes Sharon nervous when he mentions Maggie and how Vanessa revealed to the world that Maggie is her biological mother.
Luke is very scared while he sits on the gurney. Dr Marcel says he is just going to take a little blood as Luke sees his dad in the other room sleeping. Luke starts to panic, saying he is cold and doesn’t want to be there. He complains that the band is cold and it hurts. Marcel attempts to bring the needle out and Luke freaks out, causing Marcel to stop everything. Dean witnesses this, knowing Luke is the only shot at saving their patient.
Vanessa meets with her patient who was drinking water at the water fountain and doesn’t know what happened next as she was sitting on the ground with the school counselor. Vanessa learns that her grades have been slipping and the counselor has reached out to her mom, but they haven’t found a time to settle down. She produces Claudia’s backpack and there is a diuretic in there for helping her lose weight; the meds are prescribed to her mother.
Stevie and Will review their patient’s tests, thinking it might be Alzheimer’s even though he is only 45. She wants a neuro consult before they put his arm in a cast. Dean rushes over to the gurney as Dr Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard) listens to the EMS about their car accident patient. He has internal bleeding but the lungs are clear. Dean tells them to call the OR as they are heading up.
Dr Crockett Marcel sits with Lawrence, saying they can try another form of dialysis until a kidney becomes available. He knows it isn’t pleasant but it will buy them time. He promises the PD would never involve Luke and he quickly agrees to it.
Maggie finds Sharon, as she is concerned that the consultant the board brought in wants to speak to her about her relationship with Vanessa. Maggie worries that her and Vanessa are finally getting to a good place and this is going to mess things up.
Dr Blake demands to speak to Dr Marcel outside the room. He explains that Luke could not handle the blood draw so she thinks they can sedate him; Marcel refuses. Blake says he better hope this decision did not cost Lawrence his life, and storms off.
Emmanuel is talking to his dad who wants a prescription for his dad and his dad’s fiancee’s wedding night. Stevie informs them that they believe his dad has early on set of Alzheimer’s. Neither doctor can say how long he will still be himself. Stevie suggests a medication to start today and they will follow up with a treatment plan; there is no cure but all they can do is attempt to slow it down.
Dean and Dylan run to the alarms as Dean says they are going back into the OR, as their patient, Keith wonders if he is going to die. Dean is very blunt with him as Dylan tells him that his whole family is on their way there. Outside the room, Dean tells Dylan to call his family who are 3 hours away to drive faster!
Maggie is interrogated about Dr Vanessa Taylor, saying it appeared that Maggie had an ulterior motive for Vanessa working at the hospital. Maggie defends her daughter saying she did this on her own merit, but she is informed its what the appearances are.
Vanessa tells Dr Charles about Claudia, saying she is trying to get a hold of her mother but she doesn’t want to call DCFS. He understands that she needs to be sure before she makes the call, suggesting that he comes with Vanessa to speak to Claudia.
Keith explains that 10 years ago he was drunk and a guy hit on him, he saw red and punched him then walked away. He found out later that the guy hit his head when falling and died. No one knew it was Keith who hit him, confessing he murdered a man and now it was time to pay – a life for a life. Dean allows them to put him under.
A nurse stops Will and Stevie, informing them that Emmanuel’s father is telling his fiancee that his fall was the result of a balance issue. Nancy says Emmanuel is in the waiting room, where he admits he is not going to tell his father. He feels he is protecting his father after all he has dealt with in Haiti. He finally has everything to live for and he won’t take that from him. He wants his dad to live a few years of ignorant bliss. Stevie disagrees although Will thinks Emmanuel knows his father best. Stevie storms off, saying Will seems to be the one in control of everything the people should know or not know.
Dr Stevie Hammer walks with Emmanuel, pleading that he tells his dad’s fiancee, so she at least knows what she is in for. Meanwhile, Vanessa and Daniel meet with Claudia’s mother, showing the bottle of pills she gave her daughter. She explains how she struggled with her weight her entire life and ended up doing the same thing to Claudia. Daniel asks Sarah about the pills, who says she has been Claudia as the overweight teenager and she just wanted to spare her the feelings. Vanessa says she sees a mother doing the best she can as Daniel suggests programs within the hospital. Sarah is grateful and wants to be with her daughter. Daniel gives Vanessa praise as she held off on the call and to keep up the good work.
Stevie sits with Havienne, who admits Emmanuel told them about the diagnosis. Dr Hammer is trying to respect her space but is concerned that Emmanuel is not telling his father. She doesn’t want to begin their marriage with this secret but she agrees with Emmanuel’s decision. She wants him to enjoy this time with his son and respects Emmanuel’s choice. She knows it won’t be easy but she is prepared as in their culture family is everything. She thinks her fiance would be proud of his son for doing what he is doing.
Dean and Dylan are able to share with Keith’s family his prognosis. He had a stroke during the procedure but there seems to be no brain activity. Dylan offers his condolences as Dean says Keith spoke to him before he went under and reveals that if Keith was to die, he wanted his organs donated; they readily agree. The family goes to spend some time with Keith before he pulls the plug. Dean says to Dylan that Keith’s exact words were “a life for a life!”
Dean goes to see Dr Crockett Marcel, showing him Keith’s tests and if he is a match, then the family has agreed to direct organ donation. Dean walks away with an awkward smirk on his face.
Dr Marcel pleads his case to Dr Pamela Blake. She believes in him and even likes him but she feels that could be because he pisses her off. She isn’t opposed to him having his heart on his sleeve, but they work better together as a team. He admits he likes her too but she only wants to save Lawrence’s life.
Maggie finds Vanessa on the terrace, revealing she had to sit down with HR and digging into how she met her and how Vanessa ended up at Med. She never wanted to be a distraction but that is all she has been to Vanessa. Maggie warns her that they will reach out as Vanessa doesn’t care if they will call. She confesses when she started at Med she was intimidated as she was trying to prove she wasn’t an imposter, which she knows she isn’t now and reminds Maggie that all she has ever been is supportive and she is grateful Maggie is in her life and she doesn’t care who knows.
Sharon is conflicted on her decision about calling the FBI but Daniel says he is very proud of her and is going to take her out for a very expensive dinner right now. She applauds him and they leave together.
Will finds Stevie, saying the Vas Com business sucked but he needed to protect patients and if he had to do it again, he will. He wished he could have brought her in but had no choice. She tells him they are cool. Stevie asks if he slept with Jessa to get the information he needed and he resoundly says no.
Lawrence is doing well with Luke sleeping in a chair beside him. Dr Blake thanks Dean from their 11th hour Hail Mary. They bid each other goodnight. Crockett is leaving and Avery Quinn (Johanna Braddy) catches him, saying he is pretty sexy and she’s impressed with his “win”. She offers to make him dinner at her place and he declines, saying they will see each other around.
Sharon and Daniel are thoroughly enjoying their time out when Matt Cooper walks in with some board members. He tells Sharon she can come at him as hard as she wants but it doesn’t matter as she will lose and he will win. Daniel tries to stop him from talking as he tells her to enjoy her dinner. Sharon squints at it all.
