In tonight’s Good Sam episode, someone came to the hospital with a gunshot wound. This case reminded Griff about his own case. He was shot once himself and he remembers it like yesterday. He remembers asking his daughter to not let him die. Griff got so caught up in the memories that it took a second him a second to remember where he was as well what he was doing. He was about to touch the patient and that’s something he couldn’t do. He was being proctored. He couldn’t treat patients directly and so his daughter Sam has to wrestle a needle out of his hand. She reminded him he was being proctored. He resented. He resented her. He came to believe that she was glad he got shot because it was a great career move for her and he would later say as much.
After their tussle, they were asked to come to a meeting with the in-house psychiatrist. Sam’s whole team had to go and Sam wasn’t feeling into it because her mother called the meeting. Her stepdad was the therapist sent to counsel them. Sam was already resisted to the idea when Griff happened to say what he was feeling and she rushed out of there in annoyance. She didn’t think her father getting shot was a great career move. She remembers it as one of the worst days of her life. She remembers how she was the first to reach him and that she did her best to help and was told to wait on the sidelines.
Sam remembers how scary it was to do nothing. Its why she understands her father’s struggle with doing nothing now and she tried to tell him that, but he didn’t want to hear it. He likes to play the woe is me game with everyone. He forgets he used to treat most of the people like crap and the only ones that are sympathetic is his daughter and the woman he used to sleep with. Griff was just too caught up in the memories. Sam was too and she tried to repair things with her father. She signed off on the first part of his protorship. She gave it to him a week earlier than planned thinking he would be grateful and he wasn’t. He didn’t even thank her.
Griff was arrogant as well as resentful. He told Sam that she was later an artist doing his work and she didn’t need a thank you for simply doing what was right. But he did take the papers with him. He cared about it even if he didn’t want to show it. Griff also remained on the gunshot victim’s case. The victim’s name was Carl. He went on a hunting trip and they had an accident. He got shot in his chest. It was too risky to move the bullet because it was located near his heart and so they decided to do a wait and see approach. Something Griff disagreed with. He wanted to go rushing in. Its his MO. And he wanted to stick with it.
Sam meanwhile fulfilled her part in the bargain with Rhonda. Rhonda was the one who talked her into getting a big donor for the hospital and in return she wanted something. She wanted Sam to bring up her pay cut at her plastic surgery centers. She wanted to raise her cut. She thought by Sam mentioning it in a meeting with the other chiefs that it would force Sam’s mother into raising her cut, but it didn’t work out like that. Rhonda instead was told that she had to perform tummy tucks at the hospital now and that the additional funding to the hospital will pay to make sure that everyone gets the same cut at her at their medical centers affiliated to the hospital.
Rhonda didn’t get what she wanted. Sam’s mother was saved from cutting the budget and it was all thanks to Sam who found a solution to the problem. But Sam still had to deal with Griff’s attitude problem. The two of them went into surgery together where Sam let her father take the lead and they got the bullet out. The bullet went missing for a while, but they got it out. Sam thought that would be the end of it and that her father would finally be grateful and he wasn’t. if anything, he was worse. He kept accusing Sam of being glad he almost died and so she finally had enough. She showed him his DNR.
Griff signed a DNR years ago. After he was shot, Sam found it. She found it and she buried it. She didn’t want them to stop working on her father. She remembered his words about not letting him die and so she did her best to fulfill his wishes. Sam showed Griff the DNR. It happened right before their patient died. They therefore didn’t have time to talk about it because her team was in mourning. Sam’s ex-boyfriend didn’t let that risk his sobriety, though. He got sober after Griff was shot and he doesn’t ever want to reach rock bottom again. Sam was respectful of that decision. They didn’t drink any alcohol like they normally would have. And instead they just grieved.
Sam later talked to her father and he finally admitted his first concern about waking up should have been her. It shouldn’t have been about work. He wants to start over with Sam. She was willing. Sam does love her father and he loves her too in his way. They just needed to find a way to bridge the gap.
And it probably won’t help that Griff is back with Sam’s best friend.
THE END!
