In tonight’s Grey’s Anatomy Meredith was sick at home. She couldn’t come to the hospital or work. She informed Bailey on a phone and that left Bailey in a horrible position because she was down several doctors. She didn’t even have Richard to fall back on. Richard has taken a leave of absence. He refused to work until he has been properly assessed and so he couldn’t step in for Meredith. Bailey had to find someone else.

The residents couldn’t do it because, since the incident with Schmitt, the other residents have gotten back the privilege of performing solo surgeries. Richard also wasn’t fighting for them like he normally would because he was waiting to be assessed. And so Bailey was short-staffed as well short-tempered.

Plus, the hospital was chosen to be one of the few hospitals to attempt the Ross procedure. It’s a special procedure that gains global recognition. Maggie and her husband Winston were going to perform the surgery together. They were doing it on a preteen girl named Fierce Fernanda.

She’s traveled around the country looking for someone to perform the surgery on her and now she’s found one. But leave it to Winston’s brother Wendell to show up now of all days. Wendell claimed he was just wanted to see them and that he wasn’t there for anything else. Then why did approach Owen later?

Owen came in. He hadn’t been cleared for his work. Only, he saw how busy Bailey was. He offered to step in as an interim chief and so he was telling people where to and what to do when Wendell approached him with a supposed offer he couldn’t refuse. Wendell also used the fact that he was Winston’s brother to get Owen to listen to him.

He made a big sale for a defibrillator carrying drone. It was a good pitch and yet Winston was happy his brother was talking to his colleagues. Winston found out that Wendell was in medical sales now. Wendell was usually the black sheep of the family and he finally got job he was proud of. And he wanted Winston to be happy with him as well.

Winston was. He just wishes Wendell would have come to him first before talking to the people he works and those in charge of his career. It also didn’t help that Wendell only got this job by using Winston’s name. He told his boss that he got an in at Grey Sloane Memorial because his brother works there.

His sister-in-law works there as well. Wendell also lied to his boss by claiming he knew Richard personally when they had never met. Wendell missed both of the weddings. The one that failed to end the marriage and the one that did. Wendell hasn’t talked to his brother in years. It makes sense that he shows up now when he needs something.

Wendell being around had made Winston snap. He snapped that Fernanda’s family chose to continue their tour around the country before they came to the hospital and by time they did show – Fernanda’s heart had considerable weakened. She now needs more radical form of surgery. The doctors were talking about cutting her heart in half to make the Ross procedure possible. Winston thought the family made a mistake and he lost his temper. But it turns out the family has been deeply affected by Fernanda’s health. They’ve all given up something. They needed that vacation desperately and they all regret it once they saw that Fernanda could have died because of it.

Winston later saw the error of his remarks. He even regretted wanting to cancel the surgery and so he and Maggie went in there like rock stars. Everyone was watching. Owen was in the gallery to make sure that the doctors watching were all were they were supposed to be and he ran into someone there. Someone from the Medical Accreditation Council. The woman that the council sent had come in with plenty of complaints that were made by the residents. Including being overworked and having less breaks. She even took Owen to task for forcing residents away from the gallery because she said that could have been a teachable moment to watch a once in a lifetime surgery.

The lady also asked why she was talking to him instead of the Chief or the Head of the Residency program. She tried talking to Bailey and Bailey said she wasn’t the Chief. The Chief for today was Owen. Owen was dealing with the fallout. Winston and Maggie successfully completed their surgery. Winston even apologized to his brother for getting angry at him earlier. He realizes he did so because he still blames his brother for their mother dying and that wasn’t fair to him. Wendell should be judged on his own merits for what he does now. And not based on what he did in the past.

Bailey later returned to her chief duties and when she did she learned that their residency program is being accessed on whether or not it should be allowed to continue.

And Jo continues to get flirty with a patient’s brother.

THE END!
