The family was hosting a dinner to welcome Nick to the house. Nick has temporarily moved to Seattle. He was staying as long as Meredith was staying. But Meredith didn’t plan on staying for long. She only decided on postponing her move to Minnesota because the hospital was in danger of losing its residency program and she felt it was her job to stay on to help with the fight. Meredith also has a family in Seattle. Her three kids go to school there. She has her sister Maggie there. She also has her sister-in-law Amelia who was like a sister and so Meredith was in no hurry to leave them all. And that doesn’t even mention Richard or Bailey.

Those two practically raised Meredith. They were her work parents. But Richard was arriving late at the party. His wife’s cancer had come back and so he wanted to stay with her as she gets chemo. He was also annoying. He kept on reading up on her cancer, suggesting alternative medicine and more or less acting like her doctor instead of her husband. Catherine though found a distraction. She asked the man who was getting treatment beside her about his wife’s pregnancy. She was getting all the information she could to drown out Richard while the party was gathering steam.

Amelia showed up late with her new friend, Kai. The link also showed up. He showed up with Scout. Teddy and Owen also showed up. They didn’t bring the kids and so that’s a good thing because there would have been chaos if they had. Bailey also showed. The only person who seemed to be missing the party was Meredith. Meredith had been leaving the hospital when a particularly bad case came in at the last minute. The patient’s name was Alice. Alice was an elderly Asian woman who had been brutally assaulted by a man spewing racial slurs. Alice has lacerations on her face, she had a broken arm and bruised spleen.

The doctors were hoping the thing with the spleen corrected itself. The other injuries and the trauma inflicted on this poor woman were something that had the Asian doctors on her team reeling. They didn’t even need to be told. They took one look at the woman and they knew it was a hate crime. But what makes the case worse was that none of the other passengers on the bus called for help. They also didn’t take a video which in this day and age would have helped make the case. Alice was attacked and the only ones that seemed to care were her doctors and her family. And so when it will end?

Another person who showed up at the party was Wendell, Winston’s brother. He showed up uninvited. He came asking for cash. He has some bad people after him and he claimed he just needed a loan, but Winston was angry. He was angry that he would come to the house where his family was with these people after him. He was angry that Wendell lied about everything. His job. The medical equipment he sold to the hospital. Wendell was just a liar looking for fast cash and Winston was tired of helping him. Before his brother showed up at the party, Winston had even been funding his stay in a hotel.

One would think Wendell would keep a low profile at the hotel. But, no! Not him. He was ordering room service and basically telling everyone he was living the high life. On someone else’s dime no less. Winston had had enough. He told Wendell to leave the party and he told him to also leave Seattle. He said this in front of everyone. It created an awkward atmosphere that Maggie felt the need to apologize for and so Nick told her there was no need. Nick has his own Wendell. In his case, it was his sister Erica. She was a master manipulator who broke his heart each and every time for the past twenty years. And still, Nick loves her.

Families are complicated. Kai was beginning to realize that for themselves. They initially came with Amelia as just the date and then they started to get to know the extended family. They realized that Amelia was a mom. Kai doesn’t want to become a parent. They were fine with their nieces and nephews. There was a chance that Kai might never want to be a parent and so that didn’t sound right with Amelia. Amelia is a mother. She shares custody with her ex, but she loves being a mother and whoever was in her life would have to learn to accept a role in her son’s life. And so Kai was made to confront if they wanted to be a stepparent.

Kai ultimately decided they didn’t want kids. They didn’t want to be a part of that part of Amelia’s life. They later broke the news to her and so that was it for them. It’s over. The dinner was wrapping up with still no showing from Meredith. Meredith’s family meanwhile grilled Nick and found out as much as they could about him. Meredith was off saving Alice’s life. She didn’t leave until Alice was out of danger. And by the time she left the hospital, the party was over.

Meredith told Nick she loves him for the first time and he told her he loves her back.

THE END
