Tonight’s episode begins with Meredith who was the new Chief. Or at least she was acting as one as the other Chief took leave. Bailey had stepped down for who knows how long. She decided to spend the last six months with her family rather than do hospital politics. But that left Meredith in charge. She has the power to make hiring decisions and she made one. She hired a new Residency Director. She hired her former boyfriend, Nick. She missed him when he went back to Minnesota. She was too proud to call him to come back. Just not that proud not to offer him a job. Meredith hiring Nick was one of many decisions she made. She even took back both Teddy and Owen.

Owen got in trouble with the law for giving prescription meds to soldiers who wanted to end their lives. He refused to give medication to a husband of a soldier. The husband wouldn’t give details about his wife or have her come in to meet Owen and so Owen didn’t feel comfortable with giving him the meds. But that guy reported him to the authorities. Owen was left in serious legal trouble. He went on the run with his family for a while and it wasn’t until a lawyer got him probation that he returned to work only he wasn’t returning as Head of Trauma. Owen wasn’t allowed to treat patients without another attendee in the room.

The Head of Trauma position went to Teddy. Teddy was Owen’s wife. She also blew up her career to go on the run with him and so what saved her was the fact that she never assisted anyone’s suicide. Teddy didn’t get her old position back, though. She instead got Owen’s old position. She was the Head of Trauma and she frequently butts heads with Owen. They fought all the time. Their fighting was driving their intern batty. Mika was one of the new interns. It was literally her second shift and she wanted to make a good impression, but it was hard to get a word in with Teddy constantly sniping at Owen. And Owen throwing a hissy fit because he now has to be monitored on everything he does.

But at least she wasn’t the intern that caught a medical mystery. Jules and Simone were both treating two college kids that came in with food poisoning when one of the kids began experiencing shortness of breath. It would go on to become splotchy skin. Then the guy started bleeding from his IV puncture. The kid was now in serious danger of dying, but no one could name it. They also didn’t know what caused it. If it wasn’t food poisoning, then what was causing both young men to vomit for six hours? They reported it to Meredith. Meredith called in Richard and Teddy. Neither of them could figure this one out and so they gave it to the interns. They told them to figure it out it was going to be Jules’s name on the death certificate.

Jules’s patient got steadily worse as they tried to find out what was wrong with him. His leg developed gangrene and it had to be cut off. Link let Jules be the one to cut it off. He was the guy that reconstructs legs. Removing them could be left to interns. Link and Jules went into the OR with their patient. Link put a note on the leg to tell Jules where to cut as a kind gesture, but she accused him of flirting and he had to apologize. It’s especially weird because they hooked up once. They hooked up and he wanted to report it to HR because he thought he had to. Only he told Jules about it and she didn’t think they needed to report anything because they didn’t have a relationship.

They had a night together. That was all. Jules thought it was pretty desperate that he tried to define the relationship and she told him she didn’t seem that way. But it made things awkward between them. They were actually in surgery with that awkwardness still there when Simone came running in. Simone figured out what was wrong with the patient. She told them about it. It also explained why the blood wasn’t clotting because the patient began to bleed out. The link was able to fix it in the OR. He saved the patient’s life. And the kid got treated for his disease as well. It turns out he suffered a complaint that he wouldn’t have gotten if he had been vaccinated.

Mika’s case took a turn for the worst. Her patient had shoved his wife’s cell phone up his butt. They had to dig it out with both Owen and Teddy still arguing the whole time. Mika hated every moment of it. Then the patient suffered a heart event. Mika got to bag him and so she did learn something…in the end. It also helped lift Owen’s mood to teach something. Owen realized he couldn’t work with his wife looking over his shoulder. He went to Nick. He offered to teach during the rest of his probation and Nick agreed to take him up on that offer. Nick also mended ways with Meredith. They even went on a date. They attended her daughter’s school thing where Zola was supposed to present a report on Alzheimer’s. And instead, Zola freaked out onstage.

Zola thought her mother and siblings would get it and that she would be alone. And so Meredith had to run up on stage to get her and comfort her.

And the interns now think Lucas is sleeping with his aunt. They don’t know Amelia is his aunt. They just saw them come out of a room alone together and assumed the two were sleeping together. And Lucas let it pass because he didn’t want them to know that both of his aunts work at the hospital.
