In tonight’s NCIS Hawai’i episode, Naval Lt Commander Joseph Cheng was found dead from what appeared to be a poisoning. He was an engineer. He was working on a classified project for the Navy when he died at his desk and all signs pointed to espionage. The toxin he was killed with was Thallium. It was the KGB used on defectors back in the day and Saddam Hussein even liked it as well. The drug was hard to come by the United States.
It has to be brought into the country for a purpose and it can be primarily found in rat poison that Russia and China still currently use. Therefore, espionage was a safe bet. Tennant and her team later learned that Cheng was working on a top secret mission with satellites. And so someone could have poisoned him in a bid to get the project moved elsewhere.
Perhaps to a friendly spy. Russia or China could be behind Cheng’s death. It was up to Tennant’s team to investigate. They couldn’t get any specifics on whatever his project was and so they went digging into people around him. They retraced his steps. They found out that he was meeting up with Tennant’s aunt Maggie a day before he died. Tennant went to her aunt and she brought up Cheng. She also asked her aunt about what went down. Maggie considered Cheng a friend. She was hurt to find out about his murder. She said that Cheng came to her because a family member’s life was threatened if he didn’t spill information about his project.
According to Maggie, Cheng was going to go to NCIS. He was going to report the threat with his bosses and neither he nor Maggie ever thought he was in danger. They proved to be wrong. Cheng is now dead. There’s no telling if he helped the Chinese in exchange for his cousin’s life. Cheng immigrated to the United States when he was eight years old and he became a citizen at sixteen. He finished the top at Naval Academy. He was smart, he was a driven, and he was a patriot. But he left behind family in China. Family he was worried about and that’s how the Chinese MSS targeted him. They threatened his family.
Cheng was going to report everything to the proper authorities on the day he died. Its likely that the Chinese found out about it and murdered him before he could talk. Tennant needed information on what this mission was. She turned to Whistler for information. She also connected with David Sola. He was a New Zealander. He was a part of his country’s secret service and he was also after a leak that occurred with his own country’s satellites. But Sola has contacts in China. It’s the same contacts that can get out Myra Tan’s sister and so that convinced her to talk. She started telling them about a dark moon project.
Myra Tan was a Chinese spy that was arrested for trying to kill an American pilot. She’s been in custody for months and so talking now is her path to freedom. If not for herself, for her sister. The Dark Moon project was a plan to use Chinese’s nationals family members against them. They tried to do it to Cheng. It didn’t work. His cousin is most likely dead now. With Sola working on Tan’s sister and her not talking until she’s guaranteed a safe place for her sister – the rest of the team went into looking into the one credible tip they. They went looking for a man named Bao. Bao was Chinese MSS. Bao wasn’t his name. It was just a title he’s known by.
The team went looking for this Bao. They figured he must be on the island and their worst fears were confirmed when Tennant’s aunt Maggie went missing. She was most likely taken by the same people that killed Cheng and so finding her trumped everything else. Even the spy game going on. Tennant came up with a plan. She lied to Tan and made it look like the Chinese had killed her sister. She even arranged photos of this to scare her. Tan fell for it. She confirmed that Bao is on the island and that he’s known as Enlai Ying. The team went looking for him now that they know his real name and they later captured Ying and freed Maggie.
But certain things weren’t adding up. Ying isn’t Bao. Tan had been surprised when she was shown a picture of him because she didn’t think a man so low on the totem pole would take on a mission. Tennant had her people look into Bao’s known movements. She later learned that it lines up with all the trips or lectures that Maggie was there for and so Bao wasn’t a man. It was a woman. And she was family.
THE END!
