Ignoring the controversy with one of the judges, the focus remains as always on the dancing. Everyone there had a love for dance and they celebrated it with amazing one of kind routines. Thiago Pacheco was up first with his routine. He was a Contemporary dancer who not only dance with precision but who was also quite an actor and he opened up the episode by putting on a thrilling show. He was given the golden ticket of having three judges say yes to him. He was followed by Essence Wilmington. She was a Hip Hop dancer. The show showed her with her family and how dancing was in the blood. Her whole family was able to foster her love for dance and they were supporting Essence during her routine.
The judges loved her energy. Her personality. They also thought she was so tightly connected to her routine that they felt there was more she could offer and so they asked her to freestyle. Not many dancers can think on their feet, but Essence proved willing to and she put on a second performance for the judges. It was the second performance that really cemented things for the judges. They hadn’t been too sure of the first routine. It was her second one that won it. Essence got two yes and one no. Jojo said she was looking for chills. If she didn’t get chills, she couldn’t give a yes. And in spite of not saying yes, she still thought Essence could choreograph for Doja Cat.
Next up was Camila Schwarz. She was Ballroom. She didn’t dance with a partner and so she had the tough job of performing solo in a general duet dance. But she pulled it off. She danced with her whole body. She never broke eye contact with the judges. She instead pulled the judges into the dance and that’s won her a yes from all three. Camila was a great dancer. There were just a few things she needed to work on. She needed to keep her nose over her toes. She also had to work a little more on the choreography. After Camila, there was Armando “Decoy” Munoz. He was a Hip Hop dancer. And he showed the ever-evolving form of Hip Hop.
Decoy was a young man. He has a new baby at home. But he wanted to show his son that it was okay to pursue a dream and to that end, he surpassed his wildest dream when he impressed the judges. They called him “stunning”. They were all blown away by the many intricacies in his dance and he wasn’t the only one that blew the judges away. After Decoy got all three yesses, there was Ralyn Johnson. She was a Contemporary. Dancer. She started out the routine by looking quite powerful and JoJo felt she never got to see that during the routine. She said that Ralyn was ninety-three percent there. It was just the extra seven percent that she was looking for.
Not that JoJo let that stop her from giving Ralyn her third yes. Next up was Malia Baker. She was a Jazz dancer. Only she called hers “character jazz”. As in, she was very goofy. She put on a show with her face and her body. She made the audience laugh. It was fun. It just wasn’t right for the show. The show needed something a little more serious than camp. The judges couldn’t give her a single yes and so that was it for Malia. She can come back when she starts taking it seriously. After Malia, there was Waverly Fredricks. He was a Contemporary dancer. He was a tall guy and tall guys tend not to go for these types of things because being graceful while being tall didn’t always work out.
Except it did for Waverly. Waverly moved with grace, power, and precision. He put on an amazing performance and he would be the first to say that was due to his mother. His mother introduced him to dance as a little boy. Waverly fell in love with it and now he gets to move on to the next round. But it’s only going to get tougher from here on out.
