In tonight’s SYTYCD episode, the show opened up to a wonderful rendition of “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac. It was the song for the opening group number and it was truly a great song. It was also a great dance. Everyone got the chance to shine during it. With the way they danced last week, most of them needed a great number to wash out the bad. But tonight was a new night. It had new choreography. It even had new partners. The contestants were paired with all-stars from previous seasons and up first was Carter. Carter was paired with all star Bailey. They had to dance Hip Hop. It was really Carter’s thing. He was a Ballroom guy.
Carter was used to smiling. It was used to keeping things light. Hip Hop was completely out his repertoire. Yet, he did it anyways. He had to be because of the show. Carter had to get low. Something that tWitch has been asking him to do for a while now. Carter took that critique and he finally brought it to the dance. Carter was much taller than Bailey. It just didn’t look that way as they performed together because Carter got low. He did as tWitch suggested. He pulled off a great Hip Hop number. He and Bailey looked great together. tWitch was pleased. JoJo even called it her favorite Hip Hop number.
Next up was Alexis. Alexis was paired with all star Amy Yakima. They were given Jazz. Alexis was a Latin Ballroom dancer and that better prepared her for Jazz than regular Ballroom did with Carter. Jazz was serious. It was sensual. Much like Latin Ballroom. Alexis was able to fall into that routine quite easily. Her later performance with Amy was beautiful to watch as well as haunting. It left the audience quite stunned. This performance was also great for Alexis because her mom was in the studio. Her mother missed the others day. She thankfully didn’t miss this one and it was one of Alex’s best performances to date.
The judges especially enjoyed the dance. They enjoyed Alexis whenever she was onstage. She was a real frontrunner. Next up was Keaton. Keaton was paired with all star, Ezra. Ezra knew what it was like to make it the top six. The two of them were given the Jive. The storylines to their dance was that they were competing against each other for the same women. They had a lot of dangerous stunts that Keaton as a Contemporary dancer wasn’t prepared for. They were jumps, they were flips, and it was all done off each other if not a small table. And still they managed to pull it off with great skill.
The judges love it when the all stars dance with the contestants because it makes the contestants raise their game. Next up was Essence. Essence was paired with all star Koine. They were given a Contemporary number. It was hard on Essence because she was a Hip Hop dancer. She did struggle with the technicalities of the more intricate dances. She knew that she had a long way to go in that area and so Contemporary was a challenge for her. Essence had to tap into her inner emotions to channel t into the dance. It was a dance about depression. Essence used a time in which her best friend suddenly decided to ghost her as an inspiration for the dance.
Essence pulled off a very beautiful number. She also cried at the end when it was all over because her emotions were that raw and the judges only had nice things to say about her. Being paired with someone as supportive as Koine had helped Essence more than she realized. Next up was Beau. Beau was paired with all star Lex. They were given a Contemporary number. Beau was a Musical Theater dancer. He was used to bringing high energy. He was used to bringing the humor and so a dance about sobriety was as far away from his original thing as possible. Beau has also never struggled with sobriety.
Beau instead had to use his mental health to tap into the emotions for this dance. Beau struggled with suicidal thoughts some years ago and the pain is still there. It was evident in his dance. This was one of Beau’s finest moments. He delivered on an amazing number. Both he and his partner got to tell a story about real life struggles. The judges loved it next. The audience too. Next up was the last contestant of the night. It was Ralyn. Ralyn was the youngest competitor on the show. She almost went home last week and this week she was given Hip Hop. Ralyn was a Contemporary girl. She knew nothing about Hip Hop.
Ralyn was used to a softer form of dancing. It took her all star partner Comfort to get her to come out of her shell and when she did do so – it was stunning to watch. Ralyn pulled of a stellar performance. JoJo may not have been sure if she liked it or not but it was good. It was more than good. Tonight was the toughest elimination because everyone did so well.
The bottom three were Beau, Ralyn, and Alexis.
But the judges couldn’t make a decision about who to eliminate and so no one went home tonight.
THE END!
