Tonight’s episode begins with Andy still trying to get through to Jack. Jack went on a bender after finding out his biological parents kept his brother and put him in the foster care system. Since learning the news, Jack has stepped away from his job. He ignored his friends. He even forgot he agreed to become the biological father of his lesbian friend’s baby. Jack pretty much forgot about everyone else while he was dealing with his demons. But Andy doesn’t want to give up on him. She still calls him. She still texts him. Andy wasn’t going to ever give up on a friend and that was true for others as well. Andy was the one that Maya finally opened up to.
It seems some of the firefighters had heard Beckett tell Carina that Maya tried to blackmail Ross. They all now know that Maya tried to blackmail their Fire Chief and that it didn’t work. Maya didn’t get her old job back. She was also now in the doghouse with Beckett. Beckett wasn’t a forgiving man. He gave Maya the ugliest jobs he could and he was going to keep punishing her until something changes. Beckett as it happens was all set on going to rehab until he heard what Maya did. He realized he was risking his job if he went on record with his drug addiction. He chose to instead to do it on his own and he just has Sullivan there to support him.
Sullivan was also upset with Maya. He had been in a relationship with Ross. Ross ended things when Maya attempted to blackmail her over said relationship and there was nothing Sullivan could do about it. He was back on his own. He didn’t have Ross. He didn’t have Andy. He was alone. Sullivan eventually forgave Maya because he knew he did her wrong before and so now they’re even. They’ve both hurt each other. They’ve both hurt each other’s careers. Plus, until she told Andy what she blackmailed Ross over, Sullivan was the only one who knew Maya’s truth. She didn’t even tell her own wife what she did.
Maya hadn’t planned that blackmail very well. She had no concrete evidence to prove Ross and Sullivan’s relationship. She saw them on a date once. It could have been a friendly dinner and so Ross didn’t need to end her relationship with Sullivan. She only did so to protect herself in the future. Ross also was the one to tell Beckett because she knew Beckett could punish Maya for Ross. Ross couldn’t be seen to do it herself or else Maya would have a case of intimidation. But Beckett’s anger wasn’t the only repercussion that Maya faced. She now has to deal with her wife being angry. Carina said that the job promotion was causing Maya to act erratically. She thought Maya should see a therapist. And Andy agreed with Carina.
Maya told Andy what she tried to blackmail the Chief over. Andy thought that went too far. Even if it was for her dream job and so she agrees with Carina that Maya needs help. Professional help. They’ve all tried being there for her and there’s only so much they could do with all that anger she has stored up. Its why they suggested therapy. With both Carina and Andy suggesting it, it might be enough to get Maya to get help. Maya and the others later responded to a fire at an apartment building. The fire was started by someone having too many computers which created a fire hazard due to faulty wiring.
There was some guy in charge. He basically had these broke college students operating these crypto-farms all over the city in exchange for a small fee and so they were all potential fire hazards. None of these farms were operating out of the best neighborhoods. The crappier the building the better. These college students were claiming they lived there. They got money from the city to fund the extra electricity they needed and that was good in a way. It meant it these farms could be tracked down easily. Ross stepped in. She asked Station 19 to go all throughout the city warning these people about how dangerous these farms were.
If they needed backup or if someone got violent, they were told to alert the police department. But Andy didn’t have to worry about that with the college student she came across. His name was Bryan. Bryan was in charge of the crypto-farms. Bryan also tried to run from the firefighters when he saw them. He jumped off the second-story railing and landed improperly on his car. He basically smashed up his own genitals. All the guy firefighters flinched when they saw that and that’s on top of calling for an ambulance. There were also a few rumors floating around. It was just Maya, Beckett, and Sullivan who knew what Maya tried to blackmail Ross with. And so people were coming up with crazy theories trying to figure it out.
Andy felt so bad for Sullivan that she eventually came up with a lie. She told everyone that Maya tried blackmailing the Chief with rumors she allowed a firefighter to drink on the job and in exchange Maya did so to get Andy’s job as the new captain. It was a lie. But a harmless one. Sullivan definitely appreciated it. Maya not so much. Maya ran into her wife back at the firehouse. Carina asked her if she’s looked into therapists yet and Maya practically bit her head off. She was so woe is me that she didn’t hear Andy say she came up with a lie or that Jack was doing worse than before. Carina had run into Jack at the hospital. He got treated for his wrist injury from the tornado. And he told Carina why he’s so bent on self-destruction.
Jack looked up his foster siblings. He found one of his foster brothers and the guy didn’t even recognize him. He forgot all about his time with Jack. And that’s one of the reasons why Jack fell apart as he did.
Only Maya didn’t hear all of that. She was too busy storming off and even once she found out that Andy spread a lie to protect her – Maya still did something shady. Maya gave Beckett a bottle of his favorite whisky. She knew it risks his sobriety but she doesn’t care.
