In tonight’s Station 19 episode, there was a new Fire Chief in the city. Seattle Fire Chief Natasha Ross was the first woman ever named to the position. She has a lot to prove and she was smart about it. She seems like a capable woman. Ross achieved a lot in the Marines. She was brought in because the previous Fire Chiefs had made the position and those in charge a boys club.

But Ross was here to clean up their mistakes. She approved of Jack and Ben’s health initiative. She granted them official funding for their project and she rode with them as they were later called to the scene of an accident. What she didn’t do was catch up with Sullivan. Sullivan and Ross know each other. They might even have a past because what little they discussed what kinda unclear and so there’s no telling where Sullivan’s relationship with Ross might go.

No one else knew about this previous relationship. They just knew there was a new chief and that things can finally change. Maya was hopeful about becoming captain again. She was demoted by the last Fire Chief because she made waves with supporting her team through the Black Lives Matter protests sweeping the country and actually have a black firefighter sue the city for justice. Maya was called inexperienced as well as emotional during her time as captain. She hasn’t made waves since and she was hoping to get the captaincy back because everyone hates the current captain Beck.

Well, they used to hate him. Beck has done a better job of being captain lately. He even supported them through their loss after Miller died and so they did respect him, but they didn’t really like him. Beck put Jack on desk duty after he noticed Jack wasn’t fully recovering from Miller’s passing.

He also put Vic on leave. Vic hadn’t known what to do with herself so she visited the station after everyone responded to the call and she was there when a brother and sister came in covered in blood. Aaron thought his sister Jeni was dying. She wasn’t. She was just menstruating. Vic and Carina who was also there had to explain to the preteen what was happening.

Jack took care of the brother. The little boy didn’t understand what was going on and so he asked Jack if his sister was dying. Their mom had gone to the hospital where she died. Its why they didn’t go to the hospital. The little boy had overheard at the funeral that their mother died because she bled out and that’s why he thought his sister was dying.

But Jack explained the menstrual cycle. He also explained it how women can handle it and how they’ve been doing so since the first woman was born. The kids came to understand their situation. Even Jeni felt ridiculous. She felt she should have known how periods work.

Jeni blames her lack of knowledge on the fact she no longer has a mom. She said how the other kids at school think of her situation like a sad fairytale and maybe it was, but Vic pointed out that fairytales tend not to deal with periods or even explain them. Both Jeni and Aaron were feeling much better after visiting the station.

They hadn’t known that across town several fire trucks were involved in rescuing people involved in a massive car accident. One of them was Owen Hunt. He was a friend of Ben’s and so Ben repeatedly broke several rules just to get to Owen. He failed to wait for backup.

His actions caused his whole team to go down into a pit after him. He also rode up in the helicopter transport which was not only dangerous but could risk him getting sent back to the academy as a probie. Ben ignored all of that. It wasn’t after he had saved Owen’s life that Andy benched him.

She also talked to him about how it might be overwhelming to be everyone’s rock and so she gets it if he needs to lose it every now and again. But it couldn’t affect his work. It also couldn’t affect his current custody battle to get custody of Pru. Ben is too smart to be making these mistakes and it happened in front of Ross.

Ross congratulated Andy on the way she handled things. The new Fire Chief also took note how Beck or to better put it Captain Beckett handled his team and it wasn’t good. This could cause problems for more than just Ben. Not that Ben saw it that way. Ben wasn’t allowed to ride with Owen back to the hospital. Maya and Sullivan went instead. They dropped him off at the hospital and returned to the station where the new Fire Chief promoted Sullivan.

Sullivan was afraid this might have been connected to their previous friendship. He followed her out to the car to talk about it and she told him that she was way too new to be risking her career over a friend she hadn’t seen in fifteen years. And so this promotion came about because of the work she saw.

Not because of their former friendship.

And Vic was having some palpitations so she went to the hospital where she learned she’s pregnant.

THE END!
