In tonight’s The Resident episode, Devan crashed at Conrad’s. He wasn’t up to talking. Not really. He just needs time and space to come to absorb the fact that his relationship with Leela is over. He wants kids. She doesn’t. They finally had that talk after months of circling the issue with her sister wanting her baby and so it’s good that it’s over. They both want separate things. The relationship couldn’t last unless Devan gave up something he really wants. Which would have been unfair to him. It could even have caused him to resent her and so the talk was good. It settled things. Devan wants kids and Leela doesn’t. Devan hadn’t been able to face Leela after that discussion. He went to sleep the night off at Conrad’s.
Devan also arrived late the next morning. He was in for a shock along with the rest of the ER doctors once they learned that Cade quit. She gave notice and she quit. Devan found out about the same time as Conrad. Conrad tried to talk Cade out of it. He told her that she would be safe there and she said the time to leave is now. Cade had already given notice by the time she talked to Conrad. She packed up her things. She made her goodbyes and so the least Conrad was able to do was to walk her out to her car. He even opened the door for her. Something she normally wouldn’t have allowed if she hadn’t been feeling sentimental.
No sooner did Cade drive away than a car stopped just long enough to shoot into her vehicle. The car and the gunmen managed to drive off after the FBI tried to pursue them. But Cade needed serious medical attention. She took several shots. Conrad had run to her car and he rushed her back to the hospital. Conrad as well as the other doctors tirelessly worked on Cade. Conrad is especially concerned about her brain activity. He didn’t want a repeat of Nic. Billie assured him that the same thing wouldn’t happen again and that the brain was doing fine. It was the rest of the body that needed work.
As for the hospital, it went into lockdown mode because the shooting happened a mere few away. Some idiot patient complained that his doctors were taking too long in treating him and so Devan had to walk away from Cade’s case to get AJ. AJ had to approve this guy named Jimmy for being on the donor list. Only he couldn’t do so. He couldn’t do so because Jimmy is anti-vax and he refuses all vaccinations. He actually made a living out of being anti-vas. He was a podcaster. He was anti-everything. He also couldn’t go back on that stance because he risks losing his viewers if he does so and that meant he could never be placed on the transplant list.
There was a reason people needed to be vaccinated before they go on the organ donation list. The doctors couldn’t risk putting a new organ into a patient that had a death wish and they said as much to Jimmy. He refuses to believe them. He and his girlfriend demanded that an exception be made for him because he’s supposedly famous. AJ and Devan however were firm. There was never going to be an exception to the rule and this is a pretty big rule. The doctors were so busy dealing with this guy that they had to hear about what happened to Cade much later on. Cade has a rare blood type. The closest match is her father who lives in Seattle.
The dad was flying out to be with his daughter. He was catching the next flight and it was going to be sixteen hours before he lands in Atlanta. That would be sixteen hours that Cade would go without the necessary blood she would need for a thorough surgery. But this was Cade. No one was going to let her die. They thought about what Cade would do under the circumstances and they realized that Cade would bank her own blood in case anything ever happened to her. She didn’t have any at Chastain. She never planned on staying there for long and so it was at Atlanta General. It wasn’t much. It was two pints. The doctors just had to work with what they had.
There was an intrusion from the media. They crowded outside for questions. Vos thought it was about the active shooter and instead it was about Jimmy. The media was accusing Chastain of letting Jimmy die because he was anti-vas. They were trying to make a story about prejudice out it. Which was ridiculous. The media only found out about the story because Jimmy was live streaming from his hospital bed and so Vos was watching it while getting answers from Devan and AJ when they saw that Jimmy was struggling to breathe. They went rushing to his hospital room. They gave him treatment and they also made him significant another wait outside.
It was only when his wife (not girlfriend) went outside that he admitted he was vaccinated. He offered up his vaccination records and so they put him on the transplant list. Vos approved it. She didn’t care what the media thought or what Jimmy was going to let them believe. She said all that matters is that he met the requirements needed for a transplant. The doctors later broke the good news to Jimmy and his wife was there. She thought they made an exception. They told her again that they don’t make exceptions. And that’s when the wife put it together. She realized that Jimmy has been lying to her for years and that he let their son Jimmy Jr get measles for nothing.
Their son almost died by the way. The measles turned into pneumonia and their son needed to be hospitalized. He wasn’t the only one. The wife had also caught Covid and it could have killed her, but Jimmy convinced her not to get the vaccine, and all along he had been vaccinated from that as well. Now, his wife was divorcing him. She was also going to broadcast it to everyone that he was vaccinated. She even got vaccinated herself. She had a come to Jesus moment once she found out Jimmy had been lying all these years. Except, Cade took a turn for the worst. They also didn’t have her banked blood because the bag popped once it was defrosted.
That’s when Devan came up with the radical idea of using cow hemoglobin. It’s what they did overseas for soldiers in combat and it will buy Cade time until her father arrived. And so she was able to get surgery. It was a success and she later woke up in her hospital bed to find Conrad by her bedside. But it was too late to tell her father to not show because he did end up coming and unfortunately he came with an agenda.
As for Jimmy, he was going to tell his followers that his cheating ex-wife lied about him. He was also going to switch hospitals because he didn’t like AJ.
