In tonight’s The Resident episode, Irving was in the ER when someone came in making a fuss. It wasn’t the patient that was shouting for help. It was his buddy, Cricket. Cricket said his buddy Wolf was in pain. Both men were very country. Wolf also didn’t want to be touched. He has this thing about people touching him. Yet, he needed medical help. Conrad saw the situation Irving was in. He came over. He was able to talk Wolf into showing his arm. It turns out Wolf got slashed by a raccoon. The slash was deep. It needed to be cleaned before he could get antibiotics. And so Wolf was ultimately convinced to let them help him by the promise of pain killers.

It was when he was being stitched up that Wolf admitted it wasn’t a raccoon that slashed him. He claimed it was his cat. Conrad was talking to him about being honest with his doctors when the hospital was given a gift. A very special gift. The hospital would become the first place where a patient would receive a titanium ribcage implant. The hospital needed this radical surgery because it was the one thing to put them back on top. To stand out amongst hospitals. They would also receive great press and they needed that right now. They were due for budget cuts. There was also a feature about what a terrible doctor Randolph Bell was in a magazine.

This story came out right before the surgery. Bell was on the surgical team and his credibility couldn’t survive the surgery being a bust. It would just make the story about him being egotistical doctor willing to take deadly risks seem all the more real. Voss saw that article. She didn’t want to tell Bell about it because she thought the surgery would fix everything. But then the patient’s daughter saw that article. She never wanted her mother to have the experimental surgery in the first place and so she threatened to pull her mother out of it if Bell wasn’t replaced as her chief surgeon. And she wouldn’t listen to Voss’s opinion on the whole thing.

Everyone couldn’t believe that Voss would be impartial because she was married to Bell. She was his wife and her first loyalty was to him. Or at least that’s what everyone thought when they read the article. It didn’t even matter that the article was a political hit job. Bell managed to tick off a governor. The governor arranged for bias press and now patients or in this case patients’ families didn’t want him around. Which wasn’t fair to Bell. Bell was a skilled surgeon. He was later told that he was off the surgery. He wasn’t mad. He knew where this was coming from because he heard about the article and so he was willing to step aside as long as this surgery was done.

The priority was Tessa Perez. She was the patient. She was the one that needed this surgery to live a normal life. Bell stepped aside because he knew that’s what’s best for the patient and he was fine with that. He was fine up until he read the article for himself. The article was worse than what he first believed. He had an “attack” when he read that article. He became worried for his future as a surgeon. Bell was spiraling out when Conrad reached out to him for help with Wolf. Wolf lied about it being a cat that scratched him. He runs an illegal zoo with his friend Cricket. They host wild and dangerous animals. And he actually got scratched by a lion.

After he got scratched, he went to milk a scorpion of its venom. Somehow the venom got into his wound. Wolf was dying of complications when Cricket finally came clean and so that’s when Bell was enlisted. Bell pushed a radical idea to help the patient. Conrad asked him if he would have made that choice without the article hanging around his neck. Only Bell said that article or no his first priority was the patient. Bell also failed to mention that his attack was far from over. He was seeing double vision. He couldn’t read or see anything properly and yet he refused to ask for help. He didn’t want anyone else believing the article was right.

All the while there was a complication with Tessa. Her condition took a turn for the worse before the surgery and so they first had to stabilize her before they could put the implant in. They also told the cameras to stop filming. The camera crew was upset about missing out on the drama. They stayed in the hospital hoping for something to change when they saw and filmed Bell miraculously cut open Wolf to save his life. Bell wasn’t sure about signing a release only Conrad told him its a lot harder to lie about him when there’s footage. And so that camera crew might have saved Bell’s good name at Chastain.

Also, Conrad reported the illegal zoo to the state. The state was going to shut that place down. And he didn’t break doctor/patient confidentiality.

As for Tessa, she did get that new ribcage implant. The surgery was a success with Voss stepping to fill Bell’s place and so Chastain still got a win. They now have a contract with Inman Park Tech. And Tessa’s daughter apologized for getting testy with them earlier, but she made the right choice because Bell later confessed to his wife that he’s been having problems since reading the article.

Bell suspected it had something to do with his MS.

And AJ returned home with the kids after taking them to work with him only to find Padma was nowhere to be found.

THE END!
