The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers tease that we have to consider the possibility of a Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) sperm donor lab mix-up. Will a paternity test prove there’s no biological connection to Dominic Newman-Abbott-Chancellor (Rainn and River Ware) after all?
Of course, we should acknowledge that Y&R writers haven’t been all that great about bringing the drama in recent years.
They’re more interested in pointless standalone dream episodes and boring birthday parties, but that’s not what a real soap should be focusing on.
Fortunately, there might be a shift happening that’ll result in some big twists. It looks like Ashland Locke (Richard Burgi) has been lying about his lung cancer, so that’ll bring a story game-changer.
Could there be a game-changer in the shared custody storyline, too?
Devon has always felt extremely connected to Dominic, but so did Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) – and Mariah has no biological link to Dom at all.
Perhaps Devon has merely latched onto this baby as a replacement for the one he lost with Hilary Hamilton (Mishael Morgan).
Y&R has definitely done paternity shockers over the years, so maybe it’s time for another one.
That would really be the ultimate way to upend this whole custody battle, wouldn’t it?
Devon could easily have to prove his bio dad status and could get a paternity test as part of this shared custody push.
It would be absolutely crushing if Devon got the stunning news that there was a mix-up in the lab and his sperm wasn’t used after all.
It would really drive the point home that DNA doesn’t necessarily make a dad.
We can understand why Devon would have some concerns about Chance Chancellor’s (Conner Floyd) psychological state, but it’s not like Dominic is in an abusive home.
It might be different if Chance had ever put Dom in real danger, but he hasn’t.
Dominic simply cried for an extra minute or two while Chance was distracted and got a little startled when his daddy had a nightmare.
These are very minor incidents in the grand scheme of things. Dominic still seems like a happy and healthy baby on any given day.
Whether it’s the show’s intention or not, Devon is coming off as someone selfish and obsessed.
Meanwhile, Chance is coming across as a guy who’s been through a lot, but he’s trying his best to heal and be there for his family.
They’re making Chance the one to root for here in the way the story’s being told.
It just seems cruel for Devon to paint Chance as the villain in some unnecessary custody battle, which is exactly what he’ll be willing to do.
If a sperm donor mix-up happened, the show could get some gripping drama out of that and then Devon could start a new family of his own with Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan) – just like Mariah’s doing with Tessa Porter (Cait Fairbanks).
Chance and Abby would have a much easier path forward if the sperm donor was a stranger who wasn’t looking to be involved.
Would a sperm donor twist be a good way to wrap up this storyline and move on to some other ones?
