The Young and the Restless (Y&R) spoilers recap for Thursday, January 20, reveals that Chance Chancellor (Conner Floyd) will refuse to lie in court while Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) accepts Tessa Porter’s (Cait Fairbanks) marriage proposal. Here’s what Y&R viewers can look forward to.
At Crimson Lights, Amanda Sinclair (Mishael Morgan) will bring Elena Dawson (Brytni Sarpy) up to speed on the custody case and how Devon Hamilton (Bryton James) worries Abby Newman-Abbott-Chancellor (Melissa Ordway) may never trust him again.
Elena will understand Abby’s emotional reaction due to everything she’s been through over the last year or so.
Elena will also think the fear of losing a child is primal and will feel like Abby’s reacting because of that, too.
At the penthouse, Abby will act like Chance is wrong about not being a capable father.
Abby will be sick of hearing Devon’s self-serving talk and will insist on having a private discussion with Chance elsewhere.
Later, Devon will admit to Nate Hastings (Sean Dominic) that it looks like they’re in for a tough battle.
It’ll take some convincing, but Nate will manage to get Devon to go out for a run as a distraction.
At the Chancellor mansion, Abby will complain to Chance about spilling his guts to the man suing him for custody of their son.
Abby will worry Devon could use Chance’s words as a weapon against him and will refuse to let anyone splinter their family.
Chance will admit he hasn’t been honest with Abby and will come clean about just how much he’s struggling.
Chance will talk about how he relives the explosion in his nightmares and even while he’s awake.
Chance won’t think he’s the same man he used to be and will feel like he’s letting Abby down.
Abby will reassure Chance that they’re going to get him some help.
Abby will think Chance needs to rest in the meantime, but they’ll have to table this discussion to meet with Christine Williams (Lauralee Bell).
Once Christine sits down with Abby and Chance, she’ll admit the agreement may not be as simple as it seems.
There isn’t much legislation in Wisconsin to regulate the gestational surrogacy process and there isn’t much relevant case law.
Christine will note that the one overriding principle is that the judge should make a decision based on what’s best for the child.
Christine will admit it’s legally possible that the judge could decide Devon would be a better father and rule in his favor.
That said, Christine will think there are some factors working for Chance and Abby.
They’re a married couple providing a stable and loving home, so they could argue that giving Devon shared custody would be disruptive and confusing to Dom.
Although the signed contract isn’t necessarily enforceable, it does show that Devon had no desire to play a role in raising Dominic aside from being a close family friend.
However, Abby also left Dominic in Devon’s care while she was in Spain.
Christine will point out that Devon could act like Abby was encouraging him to take a paternal role. She’ll also note that Devon could play hardball and use Chance’s trauma against him.
Christine will think Chance would have to get on the stand and say that Devon’s accusations were unfounded.
Abby will pipe up about how Chance would do anything for his family, but Chance will declare that he won’t lie anymore – not for himself, not for Abby and definitely not in court.
Chance will insist that Devon is absolutely right to question his ability to be a good father right now.
At Crimson Lights, Tessa will pull Mariah away from a conversation with Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) and Noah Newman (Rory Gibson) under the guise of helping her with a promoter meeting.
Nick will notice that Noah seems a bit deflated as Tessa and Mariah go.
Next, Devon and Nate will arrive to grab some caffeine and boost up for their run. That’ll lead to Noah asking questions about a New Hope program that Devon was previously working on with Abby.
Devon will also praise Noah’s decision to work with Nick and highlight the importance of a father-son bond.
Afterward, Noah will be rather distracted as Nick dumps all kinds of job details on him.
They’ll take a break so that Nick can ask something that’s none of his business.
Nick will acknowledge how Noah seemed when Tessa left with Mariah earlier. He’ll mention Noah’s history with Tessa, but Noah will act like he’d never go after his sister’s girlfriend.
Nick will clarify that he’s not accusing Noah of anything. He’ll just think it’s natural for old attractions to resurface, so Noah will confess to dealing with some old memories while working with Tessa.
Noah will guess that maybe the nostalgia felt safe because he knew Tessa was completely unavailable.
After Noah assures Nick that he supports Mariah and Tessa 100 percent, he’ll vow to focus on work, family and having some fun.
At Society, Tessa will surprise Mariah with a romantic setup. She’ll admit she lied to lure Mariah there and will eventually drop to one knee with a ring.
Tessa will talk about how they were once this fragile thing, but they grew stronger every time they made the choice to trust this and forgive each other’s mistakes.
When Mariah asks if Tessa is doing this because of their adoption plans, Tessa will insist she can’t remember a moment when she didn’t want to do this.
Tessa was just waiting until they were both ready – and she’ll hope Mariah is as ready as she is.
Mariah will refuse to answer Tessa’s proposal until she tells her something. She’ll get Tessa to stand with her since they always lift each other up.
Mariah will praise Tessa for being so patient with her and showing so much strength, particularly after the drama that happened in the summer.
Mariah will know a lot of craziness has come into their lives, but she’ll insist she wouldn’t change a thing since it all brought them to this moment.
Marriage will ultimately accept Tessa’s marriage proposal, so Tessa will slip the engagement ring on before hugging and kissing Mariah excitedly.
Back at the Chancellor mansion, Abby will be alone with Chance as she hugs him and promises she wants him to get better.
Abby will just be wary of giving Devon permanent legal rights to their son – all because Chance is feeling stressed right now.
Chance won’t think there’s anything wrong with Devon wanting to play a permanent role in Dominic’s life.
Chance will argue that’s what any good father would want, but Abby will contend that Dominic already has a good father.
“Stop saying that!” Chance will shout. He’ll insist he’s no good to anyone and will tell Abby that he’s broken.
Chance will feel like what would really help him is to know that Dominic is in good hands. He’ll really want Abby to trust him on this, especially since they know how a custody battle would turn out.
Abby will fret over the possibility that Devon could ask for more time with Dominic later, but Chance will think they need to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Chance will want to accept Devon’s love for Dom and welcome him into their family.
Soon after, Abby will call Devon in hopes of setting up another meeting. As other Y&R news and updates emerge, we’ll keep you posted.
