Tonight’s episode begins with Rebecca and Jack in bed, she says “hey.” She tells him a story about a park she went to when she was little with her dad, there was this one swing, she loved it and he would push her on it. It was such a treat for her to go there with him and she always worried about when he would stop pushing her and say it was time to go home. She wishes she spent more time appreciating that. She tells him there are no plans, they have a completely free Saturday, and he tells her that should do nothing. Then we see Rebecca and Jack at the park swinging the kids when they were young, Randall and Beth swinging theirs, Kevin his, and Kate and Toby theirs.
Kevin wakes up, he looks at his tie, and tries to decide which one to wear. He looks at his beard and smiles.
A younger Kate looks at the family picture, then present-day Kate does the same.
Jack calls the kids down for breakfast, Rebecca says they have the Saturday free, just them. Kate has several ideas on what they can do.
Randall and Beth are in the kitchen, the service is in less than two hours. She tells him that she is just checking on him. He says he is appropriately ready for his eulogy and he is ready for this next chapter with her and their grandchildren.
Rebecca and Kate are chalk drawing on the sidewalk. Jack comes out with a ball and the boys don’t feel like playing.
Toby tells Kate that her mother was extraordinarily proud of her, and so is he. As well, “I love you kid.” Even though their marriage didn’t last, if her husband was out of the picture, he would be back.
Later in the day, Jack decides to watch home movies with the kids and Rebecca. Kevin is not interested he says he has seen it a hundred times, and Randall says it sucks. Rebecca goes to see Kevin in his room ad asks what is wrong, he says he couldn’t do any pullups, he never has and he is upset, kids were laughing at him at school. She tells him that everything in life is not going to be easy for him and that is ok. She then tells him the family doctor said he is going to be over six feet tall, a jock. He tells her that she always knows what to say, she is really good at this stuff.
At the service, Nicky tells Kevin that he was doing pretty good until he knocked on his trailer door, he didn’t care about anything. And the thing is when you don’t care about anything, you don’t care when it is gone. He really messed up his life.
Randall tells Jack that he lied about Mathletes being canceled, a kid is bugging him in class about the fuzz above his lip, so he pulled the chair out when he was about to sit down and he fell onto the floor. He got suspended from Mathletes for a week and he got detention. Jack tells him that he can’t discipline him because he is hard on himself already. Instead, he offers to teach him how to shave.
At the service, Kate is trying her best to sing Randall gets up and says his eulogy and so does Kevin. In a matter of minutes, it is all over.
Jack is showing Randall had to shave and Kevin walks in and he wants to shave as well. Jack is now showing both boys how to shave. Rebecca walks in and is sad that the boys are old enough to shave.
Randall is with his kids, he says it feels pointless, he spent his whole childhood worried to lose her, and now she is gone. Yet, the birds chirp on, he notices that he is hungry, five minutes ago he thought about work. Deja sits down with him alone, she tells him it’s not pointless, he is going to be a grandfather. Randall thinks back to his real dad with his kids when they were little, he says being a grandfather is pure unconditional love when you know that you are probably not going to be a big part of their story. Deja tells Randall her baby is a boy, he is going to have a grandson, and they want to call him William. Randall says it is about time, all he has is his women beside him.
Kate, Kevin, and Randall are sitting together. Kate says she is going to open up more music schools, Kevin says he is going to concentrate on non-profit and be home more, and Randall says that he is going to go to the Iowa state fair and shake hands and eat some deep-fried foods. For mom, he might go. Kate says she has a nightmare, they drift with their busy lives, and mom is gone. Randall says that won’t happen. Randall says someone told him to close his eyes and see his family, he says them and mom and dad, not Beth and the kids. They say the same. Kevin tells Kate if she drifts, they will drift right after her. Randall says he doesn’t know if Kevin can drift, he never learned how to swim. Randall says she grabbed his hand right at the very end, he wonders what that was.
We see Jack and Rebecca in bed, she says she is scared, and he tells her don’t be. He tells her they did good, she did good. She says there was so much love she wanted to give to them. He asks her if she is ready, and she says she doesn’t want to leave them. He says she won’t and then tells her he loves her. She squeezes his hand.
