In tonight’s Undercover Boss episode, tough on business. Even tougher on the workforce. The global pandemic hit everyone in unique and unfortunately devastating ways. But tonight’s boss wasn’t just a boss. She was a Mayor. Mayor Acquanetta Warren has been running Fontana, California for the past eleven years.

She was a Republican. She was a black Republican and she mentioned how hard it was to be both a black woman and a Republican because of the misconceptions. Some people tend to mistake her for being a Democrat because they couldn’t even fathom a black woman would run for the other party. And yet she’s was both and she was doing a great job.

Fontana started out as a steel working town. It was a couple of miles outside of LA. After WWII, people began moving away from steel and the town ultimately went bankrupt in the nineties. Unemployment was up. People started to leave and then Mayor Warren came in. She built factories. It created thousands of jobs and unemployment was at its lowest. Then the pandemic happened. The pandemic forced many places to shut down that including schools and so the kids were stuck at home. The parents were stuck home with the kids. There wasn’t a workforce and the economy stalled.

Mayor Warren said that’s when unemployment rose back up to seventeen percent. Which sounds low to big cities, but was an all-time high for small-town Fontana and so that’s when the Mayor got the idea to do the show. She wanted to go out into the community. She wanted to see why there was a worker shortage and she wanted to know what she could do to change it. Mayor Warren dressed up in a disguise before going out into the workforce. She met several people and one of them was Chris. Chris worked with Sanitation and he was also a good guy. He made the Mayor laugh. His job was stinky and somehow he didn’t mind the smell.

Chris and the Mayor cleaned out a manhole. It turns out people would throw absolutely anything and everything down there and so it was Chris’s job to clean it out so that toilets could continue to flush normally. He showed the Mayor how to do it. She has to wear a protective suit while she did so. She was even told not to open up her mouth during the task because there could be splashing. It was absolutely gross. The Mayor was glad she didn’t have to do this for a career. She was also glad that people like Chris were prepared to do this every day to keep the city moving and so she properly listened to Chris.

His wife was sick. They were doing their best to get by and the Mayor admired his courage. The Mayor next met Randy. Randy was a police officer. He was also a black man. He was part of the initiative to get diversity into the police department and Randy was a good guy. He deserves to be a policeman. He had to take a salary cut when he left his other job to become a cop. He also has to deal with flak from the black community because they often call him a sellout if not worse. Randy tends to ignore the noise. He focuses on doing the job. He often goes out into the community to see what else he could do to help people and that sometimes include counseling the homeless.

There was a lot of programs in Fontana to help the homeless. There were cleaning sites so that they could use the shower in peace and not have to worry. There were also centers to help people get back into the workforce. It was a part of Randy’s job to go out into the community to tell people about these amazing programs. He could told them about places they could sleep in safety. After Randy, there was Candace. Candace works at the park. She often has to clean it up before she can open it because she couldn’t hold child programs in the park as long as there were women’s panties and condoms everywhere.

It was part of the Mayor’s job to help her clean. She did so and she was disgusted. She felt bad for the people who have to clean up the park and she asked Candace what could the city do to fix it? Candace suggested hiring back the park ranger. There used to be a park ranger who worked at night and told people to leave when he saw them. Only he lost his job due to budget cuts. Its now on the people doing the educational programs to do the cleaning and its usually just one person doing the whole park by themselves. It was scary. It was risky. And it was also gross and so the Mayor made a promise to herself that she would look into hiring back the park ranger.

The last job that the Mayor worked was a firefighter. She worked alongside Ben the firefighter paramedic and he showed her how cool it was to be a firefighter. But Ben barely gets time-off. He doesn’t get the chance to see his wife and so the Mayor assigned covid relief helps to assisting the Fire Department.

The Mayor gave money to each of the four people she worked with. She even set up scholarships for Randy’s kids because he has nine of them and they needed all the help they could get. Chris’s system also received funds to help update it. So, that Chris doesn’t have to do everything by hand. Chris also got to go on vacation with his wife. Candace also got Park Maintenance so that she doesn’t have to clean up the park anymore. And Ben finally got time off to be with his wife.

THE END!
