In tonight’s Chicago Fire episode, Brett saw something on the job that should never have happened. She saw that B-shift failed to restock the ambulance. Brett would normally have checked everything herself before leaving, but they got called out to an Emergency before they could even check the ambo.
It’s rare they get a call that actually states its an emergency. They thought it best to briefly check over the ambulance. They did that. The narcotics were there. They thought everything was good until they arrived at a house with a baby in distress. They were called to a home because a teenage girl had given birth to a baby that remained inside of the amniotic sack.
The new mother was obviously freaked out. She thought her baby had turned into an alien or something. She went into labor before the ambulance could arrive and the baby wasn’t breathing.
Brett had to cut away the sack. She also had clamped down on the umbilical cord because the mother didn’t think to do so. Brett did her best to treat the little girl. She was stopped from doing more because the OBGYN kit hadn’t been packed for her shift. The previous shift failed to restock. There also wasn’t one in the ambulance itself.
Brett had to make do with other equipment. The other stuff weren’t as good and that baby girl almost died on them. Brett had to rush the baby to the hospital. They thankfully got the little girl to breathe on her own. She was now doing better, but her mother remained traumatized from what happened.
Maybe things would be different if the mother hadn’t gotten scared her child would die. The other paramedics failed to take into account that they were sharing that ambulance. It wasn’t just their personal use. It was their responsibility to restock the essential and Brett has been taking it easy on them for far too long.
Her shift was always supposed to have everything they need. Brett has been making it easy on them by checking the ambulance when her shifts begins and not demanding that the previous shift do their job. Only that stops now. Brett later returned to the firehouse. She reported what happened to Chief Boden.
Boden said he would report it to the PIC. The PIC’s name is Adler and he had every reason to believe that she would do something about this almost costly mistake that the paramedics made. Boden also managed to put Brett at ease by coming up with a tangible plan.
Brett stopped worrying about future mistakes. She became concerned with the next call. This time the ambulance was fully stocked. They responded to a homeless man that became trapped under a truck. The homeless man’s name is Shep. Shep was running away from teenagers because they always try to steal his cigarettes. He had nothing else and they still tried to steal from him. It made him run out into traffic. Kidd was the firefighter that stayed by Shep’s side. She talked to him as he was being rescued. She comforted him and he read a little too much into that.
Shep was unwell. He stayed at a homeless shelter until he got kicked out. He was fine on his medications and so the problem was that he never stayed on those medications. He believed he got better. He went off them. He became obsessed with the women around him. He even put one woman in the hospital and that’s why the shelter kicked him out. He now wasn’t welcome back there. They knew him to be a danger to those around him. And so things didn’t go well once he started to fixate on Kidd.
They rescued Shep with ease. He wasn’t seriously injured. He was able to walk out of the hospital after he got treated for the bump to his head. Shep then came to the firehouse supposedly to thank Kidd for saving him. Kidd felt bad for the guy. She made him a plate of food and said goodbye. She didn’t know that the little time she left him alone with Carver that Shep would go off at the mouth. Shep told the Carver that Kidd doesn’t have feelings for him (Carver). And mind you Carver has been doing a great job of hiding his feelings for Kidd.
Carver understands that Kidd was married. He would never violate their friendship by making a move on her and so he warned her about Shep. He even told her about the woman that Shep assaulted. Kidd now knows to be on guard around Shep. She knows that her husband would have told her about over empathizing with the victims they help. She just wouldn’t change that part of her personality because sometimes it does work. It worked with Carver. It also worked with Kylie. Kylie took the firefighter exam and she passed it.
Kylie didn’t think she’d pass. She had been anxious when taking it. She had been afraid of disappointing Kidd and once Kidd promised to never give up on her – everything fell into place. She passed her exam. She was one step closer to becoming a firefighter. And there was more good news, the person that failed to restock the ambulance had been fired.
She was just going to get a warning until Boden found out this was her third warning. She kept making the same mistakes and so she got fired. Before she left, she reminded Brett that Brett too can make a mistake. Brett was later alerted by the safe box for babies. She recognized the baby that was dropped off as the one she helped rescue. She was the baby born in her sack. Her mother, Amber, had abandoned the baby. She saw how good Brett was with the little girl. She realized she didn’t have what it takes to be a mother herself.
Amber took off. She went to Indiana to be with her father and away from her ex-boyfriend. Her mother meanwhile wanted nothing to do with her grandchild. She said she already raised a child. She was done. And Brett just has to hope that the little girl gets adopted like she was herself.
And Shep showed up at Brett’s apartment. Kidd called Carver. He came by and saw Shep. He tried to ask Shep to leave. Shep attacked him and Carver was fighting him off when the police showed up. Shep pretended to be the victim. The cops believed him. Carver was arrested and now his career is on the line.
THE END!
