In tonight’s Chicago PD episode, sometimes Sergeant Hank Voight likes to visit his old friend Alvin Olinksy’s grave. They had been through a lot together. They were friends as well as co-conspirators. Alvin was always willing to break the law if Voight needed him to and so Voight misses him. Voight doesn’t tell anyone about his visits to the graveyard. He keeps them to himself. He’s built up a persona as being a man of mystery and he likes it that way. The only person he would have confided to was now gone. He has no one left. And so Voight has been brooding a lot lately.

Voight has been reflecting on his life. It wasn’t really the best time for Assistant State’s Attorney Nina Chapman to call in a favor. But she’s a prosecutor. She was actually the prosecutor that tried a case against Arturo Morales and he walked. It hadn’t been because of her though. It was because he killed a witness in his trial and that frightened everyone else into silence. Nina now wanted Voight’s help because she wanted to try to make another case against Morales. He was a big-time drug dealer. He needed to be stopped.

Everyone could agree on that.

Nina said one of his men got in trouble because of a domestic violence issue. Her department then learned about a big shipment coming in from the man’s girlfriend and so Nina wanted Voight’s team to handle the case. She said it would be better for them to do it than the Narcotics division. She told Voight it was because he could close the case once and for all, but she failed to mention a few things. She failed to mention that she had first turned to a retired cop for helping with Morales. She had Mike Cortez looking into the group and he didn’t know that anyone else was involved.

Mike almost killed Torres because he thought Torres was one of Morales’s men. He backed off after Voight revealed himself. The whole thing fortunately hadn’t broken Torres’s cover. Only it did leave Voight with questions. Voight went back to Nina and he asked her if she was playing him. He asked her if she had two teams out in the field because she was trying to maneuver a takedown to help her career. Nina denied that. She said she hadn’t heard back from Mike and that she thought he turned her down.

Nina especially denied that the investigation was for her career. She said she just wanted to make her case. But Voight later overheard something that seemed important. He used Torres to infiltrate Morales’s gang and someone within the gang mentioned that Morales was able to kill that witness from 2018 thanks to Nina. Nina had been sleeping with her chief witness. She spent a night with him while he was being protected. He also snuck out on the night he died because he was meeting up with her. Hence she’s the reason he died.

Nina owned up to sleeping with her witness when she was confronted. She said that the case brought them together and that she would never have knowingly risked his life, but that’s her real motive in wanting to put Morales behind bars. She confessed to everything to Voight. She’s also lied to him once before and he wasn’t sure if he could trust her again. It wasn’t until she said she would step down to save the case that Voight realized she could get in over her head. She wasn’t dirty. She was just human.

Nina was trying to fix her mistake by getting Morales now. Voight could understand where she was coming from and he didn’t judge her for her motives. He instead put his focus back on the case. He tried to get Morales. Voight and his team tried to implicate Morales in a huge drug bust. They had everything set up and then the plan crumbled because of one thing. Morales never showed up to the drug buy. He left his buddy Lonzo hanging. He knew Lonzo would never turn against him because Lonzo has seen too much and done too much for him. It just didn’t stop Voight from trying to flip Lonzo.

They caught Lonzo with two million worth of drugs. They tried to force him into a deal with them. Only he wasn’t playing ball. Lonzo said he could call a lawyer and tell them about Nina sleeping with her chief witness. He figured that once they got that no one would take Nina seriously. Her case against Morales would seem like a vendetta and she could potentially be disbarred on top of having all her cases reopened. Lonzo figured that if he stayed silent long enough that eventually, he’d get a call from his lawyer.

Lonzo wasn’t going to willing to help them, but he helped out in other ways. Lonzo accidentally revealed he was there the night the witness was killed. Voight then retraced his steps that night and they found the witness’s body. They had enough to finally arrest Morales. And Nina finally got the closure she’s been searching for.

Nina now visits the cemetery herself to see her late boyfriend.

She now runs into Voight there.

THE END!
