In tonight’s Doubling Down with the Derricos episode, Deon broke the news about Amani to the rest of the family. Amani was Deon’s nephew. He was the son of Deon’s late brother, Chris. Chris died when the older kids were quite young. They older ones didn’t really remember him and the younger ones didn’t know they even had an uncle. It was hard on the family to discuss him after he died. Only things were different now thanks to Amani. Amani helped heal an old wound. Deon couldn’t wait to meet him and to introduce him to his kids. They were all going to Detroit to meet him.
Amani lives in Detroit. GG wanted to celebrate her seventy-third birthday there. They were all going there to make it into an occasion and GG’s new boyfriend might even join them. GG met someone online. He was in his sixties. Making GG a cougar. She also seems to genuinely like him. She just wasn’t ready to tell her family about him and so Deon actually found out about him on his own. He naturally couldn’t keep it to himself. He told everyone else. They then went on the lookout for whenever this new guy enters the picture. And when they weren’t doing that, they were getting the babies ready for preschool.
The youngest three were triplets. They were all preemies. Two of them were fine. They were simply born underweight and the third was born with a heart defect. Dawysyn has had two open heart surgeries since then. Her doctors also warned her parents that she might be delayed both physically and mentally. Her parents have taken to calling her Awesome Dawsyn so that she never leaves feels left behind. They took all three triplets to a specialist to get them accessed for school and it turns out that Dawsyn could skip a year.
Dawsyn was clever. She knew her numbers, her colors, and her shapes. She could skip Pre-K. There was just one problem with doing that and that was the other two couldn’t join her. Spots were apparently filling up. Dawsyn could get in. She would have to go without the other two and her parents weren’t sure if they wanted to do that. They’ve never split up one of their multiples before. They tend to keep them together so that they will always have a friend in their grade. And now they might have to split up a set of triplets to ensure Dawsyn takes full advantage of that amazing intellect.
Deon was also trying to lose weight. He used to be very active. He used to work out and dance all the time. Things were different now because he has fourteen kids. He doesn’t have the necessary time to lose weight or focus on anything else that wasn’t his kids. He still tried to change that by losing five pounds in a week. He thought it would be easy getting back into shape only he struggled. He struggled so much. His one day at the gym resulted in so many aches and pains that he had to rest for a few days afterwards. And cheat on his diet.
Karen likes to crack jokes about his dad bod, but she wouldn’t change him for the world and he knows that. They eventually discussed Dawsyn skipping a grade. They decided to test it out. Karen took Dawsyn out to a large kid’s playground. Just the two of them. She thought Dawsyn would have so much fun and all Dawsyn did was call out for her siblings. She wasn’t used to being on her own. Or having fun on her own. She wanted to include them in everything and things weren’t much better at the house. They were crying for Dawsyn while she was crying out for them.
Karen and Deon ultimately realized they couldn’t split them up. They were keeping the triplets together. Deon also realized he might not like his mom dating. GG invited her new friend William over to the house and Deon grilled him as much as he could before his mom got mad at him. Not that her anger lasted long. GG wasn’t sold on William. She was hoping to recreate a feeling she had as a kid and it was hard to do as an adult. She was still a little in love with a boy nicknamed “Skippy”. She never found out Skippy’s real name because he had moved away after their one and only kiss. And yet he’s the one she thinks about whenever she’s asked about great loves.
GG still had a nice date. She also chose to part company with William. She was going to keep looking for another great love and she was gearing up to start chemo again. And now she was going to Detroit to meet up with Amani.
GG still has a lot on her plate.
