Tonight on DDWTD episode, the Derricos headed to Detroit tonight. They went for GG’s birthday. But first, they had to get everyone packed. The babies tried pack for themselves by carrying just one pullup and so Deon had to break the news that they were going to need more than one. Both parents had to double check everyone’s packing skills.
They also had to pack for themselves. They had to consider clothes as well as items to entertain the kids because this birthday was an important one. Nothing could go wrong. GG was going through cancer treatments, she was missing her son Chris as well as her late mother, and she was finally meeting Chris’s son.
Chris had had a son he never knew about. He sadly passed before he could meet Amani. Amani was raised by his mother and so the family was going to Detroit to mostly to meet him. Amani was a Derrico. The Derricos were a large and very happy family that they wanted make him a part of. Getting on that plane, though, was a trial. They were a group of eighteen. There were fourteen kids on top of four adults. They had to take a bus to the airport. They had to rent a house in Detroit. They also had to rent cars in Detroit just to transport the whole family.
Detroit was a happy place for Deon and Karen. They met there. Karen was a flight attendant that was based in Detroit back then. She ran into Deon at a nightclub where Karen told him that he couldn’t be on a dance floor and not dance. That was her big move and it worked too. They danced that night away together. They became a couple and it wasn’t long before Karen mentioned those fated words. When asked how many kids she wanted, she replied “as many as God would allow”. They now have fourteen kids because of those words.
Its why they needed two cars. They had to invite Amani over to their Airbnb because it would be too hard taking all those kids to him. As for Amani, he resembles Chris. He has Chris’s hair. His build. He has Chris’s smile. GG just wanted to hold him and so the trip to Detroit was worth it in spite all of the memories it held for her. GG lost family members there. She would get sad when she was showing the kids important places in her own kids’ childhoods. But seeing Amani in person was worth it because GG got to hold him.
GG later hugged him for dear life. She said in her confessional that she felt like she never wanted to let him go. She only let him go so that he could meet the rest of the family. Deon couldn’t wait to tell Amani stories about Chris. GG also had her own stories. GG admitted she wasn’t fully prepared to become a mom because she got pregnant at sixteen with Chris and children having babies was never easy and so her own mother was the one raising him at first. Looking back at that time, GG feels sad because she hates that she deprived Chris of a mother’s love when he needed it the most.
GG now makes it up for it by being the best grandma she could be. She took part in a day of activities they had planned for the kids and Amani. She had fun with the grandbabies. She then went out to have fun with her friends. GG mentioned that one of her girlfriends had once come over to stay at her place because she needed somewhere to sleep with Stevie Wonder. They hadn’t gotten GG’s bed, but hey she got to meet Stevie Wonder. And she got an amazing story that she lowered to PG for the grandkids.
GG also got to show off Amani to her girlfriends. They took one look at him and they all said he looked like Chris. They were so happy for GG. GG loved spending time with her friends. She was touching base with them as Deon was taking his sons to his old barber shop. Deon usually does his son’s hair himself. Only he wanted them to enjoy a professional haircut by the best barber he knew. The same barber saved him from a “timmy”. A timmy was a bad haircut. It was fighting words at barber shops and beauty shops all over Detroit. The boys were therefore learning new lingo.
And afterwards, they visited Chris’s grave. It was the first time that Deon had been back since the funeral and so he got emotional. Amani and GG also got emotional. There was so much GG never got to say to Chris and so she promised her son that she would always be there for his son. And Amani later being there for her birthday had made it extra special.
