In tonight’s East New York episode, Officer Andre Bentley was shot on what seemed like a normal day. Andre finally convinced his training officer to let him drive. He no sooner was getting around to that side of the patrol car when someone drove past him and shot him point blank.
There was no provocation. If anything, Andre was never one to start a fight. He was a rookie. He was still figuring his way around on the job. He wasn’t even on call when he got shot. He and Officer Sandeford were coming back from a lunch break. They were just about to get into car when this happened and an attack on one was instantly considered an attack on all.
Deputy Inspector Regina Haywood called in everyone. She also asked for road blockades. She was doing everything in her power to find Andre’s shooter and sometimes the answers to a question could be staring at you right in the face. What about Officer Brandy Quinlan? She was his girlfriend after all.
She was also asked to work this case like everyone else and that could be a liability down the road because the cops working the case believe there was only two reasons why Andre might have been shot. It was either he did something to tick the wrong someone off or he was chosen at random for anti-police violence. It was East New York.
There was no telling what could be the motive.
Detectives Morales and Killian were working the case. The first thing they did was talk to Quinlan. Morales has noticed over the past couple of weeks how the officers couldn’t keep their eyes off of each other and so she asked Quinlan about the relationship. Quinlan admitted it was new.
She said Andre wasn’t ready for people to find out about it just yet. She even mentioned that Andre didn’t come to her about anyone bothering him or being suspicious. However, there was a third possibility over why Andre was shot. One that didn’t present itself until later on in the day. There could be a chance someone shot him to hurt his T.O. Sandeford has had a long career in the NYPD. And that comes with a long list of enemies.
Sandeford has angered so many people that the cops had a hard time bringing in suspects without him finding out. He eventually did spot someone he recognized.
Which was why he barged in on an interrogation to demand if his partner got shot over him. Sandeford had to be pulled off of a guy and in the end it was Andre who gave them their best lead. Andre later woke up in the hospital. He was struggling to breathe and so he could only barely get out the words that he saw the shooter’s car before. It was parked at the food truck near the precinct. It had a bumper sticker called “Bedstuy Tech”.
That was all Andre could say before he started to code. He was still fighting for his life as the cops were following up the lead he gave. They found the car on security footage outside of the precinct. They tracked it back to a young man who was carrying around drugs during the time of his arrest. He wasn’t their shooter. He just stole the car for someone looking for a stolen car and in exchange of stealing this car he got a bunch of heroin. The same drug that was found on him when he was arrested. The detectives checked the bags. It had an insignia that appeared to be connected to Napoleon Santiago.
Only Santiago didn’t need to kill a cop. He may have gotten arrested over drug charges, but he was making a deal with the feds to turn against the cartel and he couldn’t risk tanking his own immunity by going after some random cop. Not even the cop that dedicated herself to taking down his family. Because if Santiago was going to kill anyone, it would be Haywood. Not Andre. Andre’s closest connection to the big boss was when he saved her life. He didn’t have anything to do with the cartel bust.
Andre was a good cop. He was also a great friend. He had no enemies. Sandeford’s enemies would at least have made sure they killed him rather than his partner and so it was a mystery of why Santiago’s former crew wanted Andre dead. Only there was someone who was intent on getting answers. Sandeford skipped going to the hospital to visit Andre. He did find the time however to go after Santiago’s crew and try and get answers. He did it out of uniform. Haywood tried to put him on desk duty and so he took the day off to get out of that and to hit the streets looking for the shooter. He wanted to find the guy before everyone else did. And he wanted to take his own revenge.
Sandeford as well as the other cops were looking for Kiki Santiago. Kiki was Napoleon’s brother. He was steadfastly loyal to Napoleon. He was also crazy. His people gave him up to Sandeford who found him right before the rest of the cops could. Sandeford had the chance to kill Kiki. He instead recorded his confession and arrested him. Kiki had bragged about shooting Andre. He said the days of lawyers were over. It was now blood for blood. And that’s what Sandeford caught on tape.
Sandeford handed over Kiki to his fellow cops and he’ll face consequences over going rogue.
But they caught the guy and Sandeford finally visited Andre at the hospital.
THE END!
