General Hospital Recap: Thursday, July 20 – Heather Hints Esme Behind Adoptive Parents' ‘Accident’ – Sonny Rescues Austin

General Hospital (GH) spoilers recap for Thursday, July 20, reveals that angry Gordon Stevens (Maurice Hall) interrupted Austin Gatlin-Holt’s (Roger Howarth) evening with Ava Jerome (Maura West), Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) at the Port Charles Grill.

Mason Gatlin (Nathanyael Grey) previously brought injured Gordon to him as a patient, but now Gordon was furious since Mason hadn’t paid him for all his services.

Once Gordon conveyed that to Austin outside, he threatened to break Austin’s arm before Sonny appeared.

Sonny warned that if Gordon broke Austin, then he would break Gordon!

Gordon confirmed that he knew who Sonny was and apologized to Austin at Sonny’s urging.

After Gordon took off, Sonny suggested he didn’t know being a medical professional was so hazardous and sent Austin back inside.

However, Sonny flashed back to spying on Austin and Gordon’s earlier conversation, so he knew Austin was caught up in some shady business with his cousin.

Once Sonny rejoined the group at the restaurant, he said he felt like he knew a lot more about Austin.

At Pentonville, Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober) approached Esme Prince (Avery Pohl), who assumed he had the wrong visitor.

After Cyrus said Esme was exactly who he wanted to see, he thought they had something in common since they were both struggling to overcome problematic pasts.

Cyrus mentioned that Laura Collins (Genie Francis) was his sister and talked about Ace Cassadine (Jay and Joey Clay) being part of his family.

When Heather Webber (Alley Mills) appeared, she warned Cyrus to never say Ace’s name again.

According to Heather, she was the only family Esme and Ace needed.

Heather assumed Esme was willing to give her another chance and sat alone with her once Cyrus sauntered off.

Esme clarified that she still thought Heather was the same vile, reprehensible person.

That said, Heather was the only one who could give Esme the information she needed.

Esme asked why Heather abandoned her, but Heather argued that she made a sacrifice to give her daughter the best life possible.

Heather also hinted about doing everything she could to protect Esme, who ranted about all “The Hook” chaos and didn’t think that qualified as an act of love.

Nevertheless, Heather thought Esme was there because she finally realized how much they had in common.

Esme acknowledged that maybe the old Esme was like Heather, but she felt she was nothing like her now. That meant Esme would never hurt anyone or abandon her child.

Heather countered that if she’d raised Esme along with Ryan Chamberlain (Jon Lindstrom), then Esme wouldn’t have been able to flourish.

Esme recalled how Spencer Cassadine (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) told her that her adoptive family had been cold, but Heather acted like Esme shouldn’t be listening to him.

After Esme bickered with Heather about Spencer’s role in Ace’s life, her bio mom mocked the idea of them creating a fairytale family.

Heather wondered how that was going to work when Spencer found out exactly what happened to Esme’s adoptive parents.

Esme said she’d been told there was an accident, but Heather acted like Esme had something to do with sending her adoptive mom and dad to an early grave.

Once Heather backtracked and said she shouldn’t have brought that up, Esme felt it was a mistake to come there.

Heather thought the real mistake was caring what other people thought since those in Port Charles didn’t forgive and forget.

After Heather said she loved and accepted Esme exactly how she was, she added that she might be the only person in the whole world who’d ever feel that way.

Esme called Spencer after the visit to ask questions about her adoptive parents, but he was annoyed and hung up on her so he could focus on Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali).

In Curtis Ashford’s (Donnell Turner) hospital room, he was allowed to have two visitors at a time.

Trina and Marshall Ashford (Robert Gossett) went in first, so they helped Curtis understand what happened to him.

Meanwhile, Spencer promised Portia Robinson (Brook Kerr) that he wouldn’t let his family connections harm Trina or her own family ever again, but Portia wondered if he really thought he could keep that promise.

In a moment alone with Marshall, Curtis opened up about reuniting with his mom and feeling Tommy Ashford’s presence.

It felt like more than a dream, but Curtis came back for the same reason Marshall did: for his child.

Since Portia got inside Spencer’s head about being such a burden for Trina, he asked if he made her life better or just harder.

Although Trina acknowledged that things hadn’t been easy, she seemed hopeful about things settling down.

Once Portia and TJ Ashford (Tajh Bellow) joined Curtis in his room, his doctor did some routine tests.

That led to Curtis realizing he couldn’t feel his legs, so he was taken aback over that news.

At the Metro Court pool, Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson) tried to stab Cody Bell (Josh Kelly) again, but Maxie Jones (Kirsten Storms) pushed her to see that Cody wasn’t hurting anyone.

Once the vision of Cyrus disappeared, Sasha was horrified over what she’d done.

Cody collapsed before the paramedics came along with Detective Bennett (Kendrick Cross), who warned that Sasha was facing assault with a deadly weapon charges.

After Maxie called Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) looking for Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna), she gave her some quick updates on Cody’s injury.

Maxie then tried to explain to Detective Bennett that Sasha was unwell.

Once Maxie got the pills out of Sasha’s purse and showed Detective Bennett, the reporter piped up about Sasha’s well-documented history of mental health struggles.

Detective Bennett learned that Sasha had lost both her baby and her husband, so he seemed to understand this wasn’t a malicious act.

Even so, Detective did everything by the book and had Sasha hauled off to GH for a psych evaluation.

Gladys Corbin (Bonnie Burroughs) wanted to go with Sasha, but Detective Bennett pointed out that she wasn’t allowed to ride with her.

After Sam ordered Kristina Corinthos-Davis (Kate Mansi) and Molly Lansing-Davis (Brooke Anne Smith) to talk, she headed for the hospital.

Sam caught up with Cody, who was doing OK now that he’d been stitched up.

Although Sam assumed Cody was in some kind of trouble, he explained that Sasha was the one in trouble this time.

Sam found out about Sasha going after Cody thinking he was Cyrus and shoplifting recently, so she guessed Sasha’s recovery hit a setback.

As Sasha arrived and was wheeled onto the elevator, she locked eyes with Cody in the distance and seemed unsettled.

Back at Sam’s penthouse, Molly pointed out that Kristina should’ve come to her first about the surrogacy suggestion.

Kristina understood why and admitted she had a big mouth to go with her big heart.

However, Kristina felt like Molly had never really needed her like a little sister normally would.

That’s why Kristina latched onto this surrogacy idea and so desperately wanted to help her.

Molly insisted all she needed was for Kristina to be her big sister, so they managed to patch things up.

As Kristina headed to the kitchen for ice cream and vodka, she pointed out that the offer she made still stood.

General Hospital spoilers say Molly will have a lot to think about, so stay tuned for more baby drama.
