General Hospital (GH) spoilers update reveals that the ABC soap has become a new target of picketers. GH has continued production since the WGA strike began and has allegedly hired Fi-Core writers, so the show’s now under fire.
Since General Hospital is filmed at Prospect Studios in Los Angeles, that’s where picketers have gathered to make their voices heard.
Several WGA members are fighting to shut down production since new episodes are still being written and filmed.
Soap Opera Network spoke with Emilio Aldrich, who’s the strike captain for this group picketing at GH.
Aldrich made it clear they have no intention of going anywhere since they’re passionate about the strike and getting the fair deal that writers deserve.
“We’re just looking to show all the studios, whether that may be ‘General Hospital’ and all the other [soaps] included, that we are going to be out here for as long as it takes…” Aldrich insisted.
Of course, daytime dramas are a completely different animal compared to primetime shows that shoot sporadically and have far fewer episodes to film.
It takes a lot to keep GH on the air five days a week year-round.
To avoid interruption and stay on the air for fans, soaps often rely on “scabs” – meaning writers who are strikebreakers.
When writers go Financial Core or Fi-Core for short, they cancel their union status and can no longer take part in WGA votes or win WGA awards.
However, they’re still eligible for some benefits in their contract and can continue writing.
The Young and the Restless Head Writer and Executive Producer Josh Griffith went Fi-Core during the last writers’ strike, so he’s been able to remain at the helm. Y&R is still rolling right along with Griffith’s scripts as a result.
Sheri Anderson is a story consultant at Days of Our Lives as well as a former head writer, so she’s now Fi-Core and can contribute.
Michael Minnis is the co-head writer at The Bold and the Beautiful, so it’s worth mentioning that he’s been added to the Fi-Core list along with a producer named Mark Pinciotti.
So far, ABC hasn’t commented on the “scabs” or Fi-Core writers who may be behind the newest scripts at GH, but we’ll pass along updates as more news becomes available.
