Tonight’s episode begins with the residents who have taken over Meredith’s house. They got a couple of pieces of furniture. They didn’t get beds because that was a little too much out of their budget for now and so they’ve been sleeping wherever they could. On the sofa. On one of those floatable beds. They were basically living on top of each other and they had no complaints because the house was much better than their past living arrangements. They were going to move into the rooms eventually. They even came up with a way of assigning rooms.
They were going to compete for them. The first person to be put on surgery would get the largest room. They were currently only doing assists and Kwan and Simone were beating Mika in that regard. They were going to be assisting Link with his high profile surgery on legendary Seahawk, Tank. Tank was the star of the Seattle football team. He threw out his knee recently. He needed to get it fixed so that he could return to playing the game and his entire career was put in Link’s hands. Link couldn’t risk jeopardizing his surgery or else the whole of Seattle would be after him.
Link had the residents monitoring Tank 24/7. Simone went further by actually developing a bond with Tank and putting him at ease. Simone has had his surgery before. She was a competitive figure skater at one point in time. She blew out her knee and she had to get it fixed. The surgery was a success, but Simone got into med school and so she pursued that over skating. Simone told Tank all about it. He was worried about his future career if his knee didn’t get better and so hearing from someone who did the surgery made him feel comfortable around Link.
Tank was a little on edge because he has to pretend to be confident around the journalist. There was a journalist following him around and documenting the surgery. The journalist was interviewing everybody. This included Kwan. The journalist also stayed in the gallery during the surgery so that he could watch everything and many around the hospital came out to watch. They were a lot of Seahawk fans at the hospital. Bailey was one of them. She had gotten a picture with Tank and he had also signed a t-shirt for her.
Bailey had so many questions yet she couldn’t ask them all because she got called to daycare. Bailey’s adopted daughter Pru had gotten bitten by Teddy and Owen’s daughter Allison. It was a one-time thing. Allison was reprimanded and she was taught not to hurt her friend anymore. But with the parents being there, it gave Teddy a chance to talk to Bailey one on one. Teddy was offered the job as Chief and she didn’t know if she wanted to take it. Bailey herself had walked away from the job after their residency program got shut down. And so Bailey was the perfect person for advice.
Bailey told her that the pay raise wasn’t high enough. The weeks off weren’t enough. The meetings, complaints, and general politics didn’t leave room for innovation. Teddy heard all of that and she came up with a plan. She approached Richard with her own set of requirements. She wanted more money, more time off, and she wanted an assistant to deal with complaints personally as well sit in for her at board meetings. Teddy said she needed those requirements to be met before she takes on the job. And Richard had needed time to think about it.
Richard takes great pride in the hospital. He feels that those that have been called to serve should take pride in the hospital as well. Teddy however was an actual soldier. She said that she didn’t need him to mansplain that to her. She had requirements. Were they going to be met or not? Then Amelia walks in. Amelia wants to apply for the job as chief and she didn’t have as many requirements as Teddy did. Richard was trying to pick between them when Tank took the turn for the worse.
Tank had made it through his surgery. Everything was looking good. He got sent back to his room and all of sudden he began to flatline. They rushed him back into the OR to treat his heart, but it was too late. Tank later died. His death was quite a news story for the media outside and now the story was all about how Link failed to save the footballer’s life. Winston offered to deal with the press for Link. Only Link said this was on him. Tank dying was on him and that he’ll face the backlash from it on his own.
The residents meanwhile were taking the news all differently. Simone was hurting because she did develop a bond with Tank. Mika was unfazed because she did have a procedure before Lucas and so that meant she gets the biggest room. Jules herself had some happy news of her own. She was congratulated today for the first time ever in her life because of the work she did with a pregnant patient. The poor woman has two other kids. She suffered postpartum depression with both and she barely survived it. She couldn’t do it a third time and so Jules quietly supported her through an abortion.
And Winston and Maggie finally talked. Winston was sad about losing Tank and Maggie offered to take his mind off it by giving him some work, but Winston said that her problem. She uses work to hide from her problems. He doesn’t do that.
And Teddy became chief in spite all of her conditions because Amelia was a plant to help Teddy get the job. Only Teddy now has to deal with the media crowding outside of their hospital.
Simone’s boyfriend also stopped by the house and that was a surprise for Lucas because he and Simone have been hooking up.
