Tonight on NBC their reboot of the classic series Magnum P.I. airs with an all-new Sunday, March 12, 2023, episode and we have your Magnum P.I. recap below. In tonight’s Magnum P.I. season 5 episode 5 called, “Welcome to Paradise, Now Die,” as per the CBS synopsis, “Magnum recruits Katsumoto to help find a missing tourist. Higgins and Kumu attempt to solve the murder of a beloved dog. Rick enlists the aid of TC after he accidentally loses Magnum’s pet mouse, Roberto II.”

In tonight’s Magnum P.I. episode, Magnum was reading HPD’s file on Captain Greene’s death when Gordo asked him for a favor. Former HPD Detective Gordon Katsumoto had heard about a missing tourist and, while he no longer has the access to investigate it on his own, he could at least call on Magnum to do it.
The tourist’s name is David Carter. He came to Hawaii on vacation with his wife and daughter. They were all on the beach together on the night he disappeared. They were waiting for a fireworks show. David stepped away to go the bar and he just disappeared.
His family lost sight of him. They tried calling him. He either wasn’t answering or he didn’t have access to his phone. His wife suspected the latter. Dana said David wouldn’t have just walked away. Not when they were supposed to be spending time together as a family.
She claims he would have told her if he had to step away. She wanted to file a police report and she couldn’t really do that right now because police don’t go looking for an able bodied adult until a full day has passed. And Dana didn’t want to wait that long.
Dana turned to Gordo. Gordo turned to Magnum. Gordo was even willing to help Magnum with the case and so the two of them worked on it together while Juliette took another case. Juliette was working a murder. She was approached by Patty. Patty’s best friend and the love of her life had been her dog, Hank.
Patty got Hank when she was married to her ex-husband. The marriage didn’t work out, but she got Hank and she was happy with that. Patty devoted her whole life to Hank. And when he suddenly dropped dead, she became suspicious.
Patty had the vet run an autopsy on her dog. He died from eating a poisoned lemon bar. Patty hired Juliette to find who killed her dog. Only Juliette didn’t think the dog was the intended victim. Its not everyday that dogs eat lemon bars. It sounds more like someone poisoned Patty’s snack hoping she’d eat it.
Juliette became concerned for her client and she learned that Patty has enemies. Patty was hated at the dog park. She let her dog do anything he wanted. He wasn’t even neutered. She also made some very snide comments to her fellow dog owners.
Now, those people loved animals way too much to intentionally hurt a dog. His owner on the other hand was up for grabs. So, there were enemies from the dog park. There were also enemies from her private life. Patty recently called off an engagement. She ended the relationship and Juliette learned this guy wasn’t as well-off as Patty.
She was living the high life while her ex more middle ground. Only that ex has since moved on from Patty. He also said she would have lost that money if they got married like planned because Patty was living off her alimony checks from her ex-husband, Patrick.
Juliette and, her partner for this case, Kumu were began looking into Patrick. Patrick was desperate to stop the alimony payments to Patty and he still had access to her house because it was once his house. That’s how he was able to poison the sugar she used to bake her lemon bars. Juliette and Kumu collected the evidence and they handed that along with Patrick over to the police. He was arrested for attempted murder. And if it was up to Patty, he’d also get arrested for murdering her beloved dog.
Unbeknownst to everyone other than TC, Rick accidentally freed Magnum’s pet mouse. The mouse got out in the house and Rick called TC to help get it back before Magnum notices its missing. They searched the whole guest house together. They managed to find a necklace belonging to Magnum’s newest fling. They then got so busy talking about who Magnum was sleeping with that the mouse managed to sneak back to the cage. And he was there when Magnum came in with Juliette and so Juliette saw her necklace before reclaiming it.
Now, TC and Rick knows who Magnum is sleeping with. They also heard from Magnum how his day went. His family man of a tourist used to work for the mob. Right up until he disappeared with their money back in 2010. He then started over with a new name. He met Dana. They had their daughter and they go on vacation to Hawaii. David ran into his old crime boss at the bar. He then went on the run because he hadn’t wanted the man to see him with his family. And unfortunately his family was seen because the mob boss came back for them.
David had warned Dana about his old boss. She hid their daughter and let herself get captured. Magnum and Gordo found the little girl. They turned her over to the cops. They them went looking for David and they found him. They found him when he was meeting with the mob boss to give the man’s money back in exchange for his wife’s life. But Gordo created a distraction. This allowed Magnum to sneak up in the back and they knocked out the mobster’s muscle. They also citizen arrested the mob guy. And so the police were called to clean up the scene.
David will have to answer a lot of questions, but at least his family is safe and hopefully they’ll disappear again.
