Tonight’s Masterchef episode begins with judges Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Aarón Sánchez. Tonight another region will compete and the best of the best will earn a Masterchef apron.
We’ve seen the Northeast and the Midwest, it is time for more auditions and tonight they are from the West. And, there is a guest judge, she has six best selling cookbooks, Susan Feniger. What they want to see tonight, is someone who makes something that really stands out and flavour is the most important.
Lizzie is 29 years old from Fairbanks, AK and she is a Preschool Teacher’s Aid. Because they have darkness all the time in the winter, she started cooking. Now, she teaches and cooks at a pizza parlour. She made Roasted Alaskan Halibut with Cauliflower Puree, Pan-Seared Mushrooms and Fresh Herb Oil.
Susan loves the flavour of the oil, the earthiness, its a yes all the way. Aarón loves it, the dish has confidence, it is a yes. Gordon says she did the plate justice, the puree is sublime. Joe says he hasn’t tasted halibut like this before, and he says yes for apron, and the dish merits to be copied, it is that good. Gordon gives a yes too, Lizzie gets an apron.
Gigi is known as the Salmon Queen, eight to ten pounds of salmon a week. And, she even tattooed Salmon on the inside of her lip. She has made Spicy Salmon Tostados with Crispy Salmon Skin Shell.
Gordon is wondering why it is not cooked, the actual best thing is the skin. Joe says it is pedestrian, he doesn’t taste the salmon at all. Susan says it has the potential to be great, but it needs balance. Gordon says it is definitely no for an apron.
Tyson is 38 years old from Taylorsville, Utah and he has made a Utah Scone with Raspberry Compote and Lemon Basil Whipped Cream.
Susan says on its own it could have a bit more flavour. Gordon says it needs salt, it just tastes like fried bread. Joe says not salting a dough like that is an amateur mistake, for him it is a no. Aarón says he appreciates the passion, but it is a no. Gordon says that is two no’s, so no apron.
Amanda is 44 years old, she is from Sherman Oaks, CA and is a stay-at-hone mom. She is a California girl and California mom. Cooking is her obsession and now is her time. She made Herb Crusted Halibut with Sautéed Tomatoes & Fennel and Pickled Purple Cauliflower.
Gordon says the halibut is cooked beautifully, its seasons perfectly, it is exceptional, the perfect harmony. He is a resounding yes. Susan says it speaks California, she is a yes. Aarón thinks there are too many onions, didn’t need the tomatoes and the fennel is dominating his pallet, so it is a no. Joe is in a difficult position, he says yes, she gets an apron.
Megan is 41 years old from Cokeville, WY and she is a Motel Owner. A year and a half ago she and her husband bought a motel, it is a family affair and it has been going well. She made Espresso Custard with Dark Chocolate Cup and Caramel Whipped Cream.
Susan loves the flavour, she would want a different garnish, it is a yes for her. Aarón is shocked that she got that much flavour in the custard, he says yes. Joe has difficulty, he doesn’t taste the coffee, he finds it tastes like glue, it is a no. Gordon says it needs a sponge to lighten the load, it is a tough one, he says no.
Madame Donut is 48 years old from Maui, HI and she is a Donut Shop Owner. About ten years ago she started a donut shop and she makes everything from scratch. She made Ahi Tuna Musabi with Crispy Sushi Rice and Soy Gastrique.
Gordon says the tuna is cooked beautifully, the rice needs to be crispier, for him it is a no, to go back to Maui, but yes for an apron. Susan is yes as well. Aarón says the rice is the shining star, its a yes. Joe says the donut queen needs to leave the donuts behind, its a yes for an apron.
Kennedy is 26 years old from Denver, Co and she is a Festival Vendor. She grew up on a farm, she is a wild girl and it shaped who she is today. She made Elk Tenderloin with Rainbow Carrots and Blueberry Compote.
Gordon says she nailed that, its a yes from him. Susan loves it, it is perfect and delicious, it is a yes. Aarón says perfect handling of the elk, its a yes. Joe says she is what they are looking for. She gets an apron.
James is from Portland, Oregon, his mom taught him how to cook and he is doing this for her. She taught him that he could do anything. He made Glorious Gloria Crab Cakes with Tar Tar Sauce and Sauteed Squash. His dream is to open a food cart and serve soups, he loves making soups.
Aarón says overall the crab cake is compelling and it is taking over his pallet in a beautiful way, it is a yes. Susan says yes. Gordon says that is one of the best crab cakes he has ever tasted, it is a yes from him and he gets an apron.
Calvin Berkley is 18 years old from San Diego, California and still in school. He made Halibut Cheek tacos with Kiwi & Watermelon Salsa.
Aarón says a taco needs three elements, the tortilla was oily, the kiwi and watermelon had no business being there, form him it is a no. Susan says he needed more of a base to hold the juice, she is a no. He doesn’t get an apron.
THE END!
