Tonight’s Masterchef episode reveals it was the last night of the regional auditions! It was up to the South to represent the very best of good ole Southern cuisine. There were only five remaining spots on this season of “MasterChef” and everyone wanted it.

But to get it, they would have to impress the usual judges as well as tonight’s celebrity guest judge. Tiffany Derry made a name for herself with her own take on Southern cuisine. She was now an award-winning chef with her own restaurant. She also has written several books. She was the expert in this field and it was up to the contestants to blow her away.

Up first was Reagan. Reagan was a paralegal from Louisiana. She loves her clients only her passion has always been cooking and she’s finally ready to pursue it. She made Jerk Shrimp with Roasted Corn and Red Peppers. She used Louisiana jumbo shrimp.

Her dish looked really pretty. It just lacked some of the additional seasoning that would have gone into a jerk dish. Other than that it was a perfectly executed dish. Tiffany said as much and even Aaron agreed with her. Reagan had said that the drinks at his restaurant down south were better than the food. And he didn’t take it personally.

Reagan was the first to be offered an apron tonight. Austin hoped she would be the second. Austin was from Texas. She wanted to represent Southern Texas well and she didn’t really do that with her dish. She made a Ribeye Steak with Creamy Salsa Verde and a Mexican Street Corn.

She had been wrong about the temp on the meat. She was aiming for medium rare and she got medium. The salsa verde also was a little too acidic. She got two no’s and that was it for her night. After Austin, there was Kendal.

Kendal was from Mississippi. He was a BBQ Champion. He’s won several awards for his BBQ and it was once called the best in the South. Kendal made Filet Mignon with Crawfish Cream Sauce and Creamy Mashed Potatoes tonight. It wasn’t that great visually speaking. It looked a little brown.

Kendal said that the taste would be amazing and he wasn’t lying. It was cooked properly. It was seasoned great. There were a few issues and at the same time there was enough technique there that the judges felt comfortable with offering Kendal the second apron.

Jessica went up next. She was from Florida. People tend not to associate Florida with the South only they were Southern and Jessica wanted to prove it. She was also a professional flamenco dancer. Aaron upon hearing that had asked for a dance. They danced together and then Jessica had to go running back to her dishes. Jessica made Masitas De Puerco Fritas with a Mojo Garlic Citrusy Herby Sauce and some Tostones over a bed of Rice. The star of the dish was disheartening because she didn’t choose a fattier piece of meat that would have highlight her dish. And if you fail to make the protein the star – the dish would be forgotten.

Jessica didn’t get an apron tonight. Michelle had her tun right after. She was from Virginia. She was trying out because it was on her bucket list and fortunately all she wanted was to audition. She didn’t put on her list that she wanted to win MasterChef. Maybe that’s why she didn’t put more effort into the dish. She made Crepe Cake with Pecans and it was a bust. The pecans nearly took out Tiffany’s tooth. The cake had nothing really to offer. The judges couldn’t even find a kind word for it and so Michelle didn’t get an apron either. And after her, there was Jennifer.

Jennifer was Arkansas. She cooks for her six children and they were the ones that encouraged to pursue her culinary dreams. It was her dream to one day open up a high-end café. She also wanted a Michelin star one day. Jennifer later made an Apple Blossom Tarte with a Maple Crème Anglaise, Spicy Cranberry Compote, and additional Cranberry sauce. It looked horrible. Jennifer tried to defend herself by saying she needed more time and Ramsay told her that he didn’t want to hear her excuses. As for the dish itself, it tasted great.

It was a very appetizing dish. Only was it worth an apron? The judges must have thought so because they offered Jennifer an apron. Sav went next. Sav was short for Savannah. She was a farmer from Alabama. She does everything by hand on her farm and she grows some of the bets produce in the state. Sav went to college for other things only she gave most of it up to become a farmer. She dreams of one day having a farm to table restaurant. She made the judges a plate full of Fried Chicken with Pickled Green Tomatoes, Purple Sweet Potato Mash, and a Coleslaw stack. Sav’s dish was the most country dish they’ve ever seen.

Joe came to love the dish. Joe the typical food snob had loved her dish. That alone was worth an apron and so Sav got one. Kolby went on right after she did. Kolby was from Texas. He comes from a football family. His dad and his brother both play. Kolby on the other hand found his passion in the culinary arts. He has the support of his whole family, but none was dearer to him than Kolby’s grandfather. PawPaw has been there for every important moment. And he wasn’t going to miss this. He flew from Houston to LA just to see Kolby compete.

Kolby later made Crawfish Etouffee with Parmesan Garlic Bread. His PawPaw was brought in to taste the dish. PawPaw said it was amazing and that it was deserving of an apron and the judges agreed with him. They offered Kolby the final apron.

And now with the contestants all set – it was time for MasterChef to truly begin.

THE END!
