In tonight’s Masterchef episode, the Regional thing had its advantages! It saved people last episode. It also fosters a sense of unity. But this was a competition. There could only be one winner. Kyle was safe from elimination tonight. He also received a second advantage as well. The contestants dealt with their first Mystery Box Challenge tonight.

Their secret ingredient was apples. America was the biggest apple growers in the world. Apples was very much a part of the American Dream. Kyle’s advantage in this challenge was that he got to determine which direction each region got to take. He could either give them Sweet or Savory. He gave the Midwest Savory.

Kyle spoke to his regional team before he even made a decision. They all decided to go Savory. They also decided to kneecap the South as well as the Northeast. Those were their biggest competitors. Kyle ended up giving them Sweet. He gave the West Savory because he didn’t see them as a threat. The only one who could bring down the Midwest (in their eyes anyway) was Wayne. Wayne got dinged the last time for poor technique. He also wanted to make a Sweet dish originally. He was flying by the seat of his pants with Savory.

Kyle only gave him Savory because he was confident in the other members of the Midwest team. Only Wayne was making something with couscous. It was basically rice the same way that risotto was basically rice and he screwed up his risotto the last time. The judges were a bit worried about it when they found out what he’d be making. They also warned Wayne that he needed to balance his dish. The dish had to taste more than just apple. Apple had to be chief, but it was okay to balance it out with other flavors.

Kyle knew what he was doing when he gave Richie Sweet. Richie struggled with deserts last time. He then thought he could do an apple cinnamon cupcake tonight and it was clear he was struggling. He didn’t leave enough time for everything. Sweets naturally took an extra amount of time. Richie was struggling while Reagan was being her confident self. Reagan doesn’t get shook up. She said that she knew how to bake and that was all she needed to thrive. And while Kyle thought the Midwest would be safe, he underestimated Charles.

Charles tried to cook apples with fish. He wanted to turn the apples into a fish scale on the fish. The judges had to ask him to use some apples and some potatoes to create that effect or else the apples would overpower the fish. The judges knew what they were talking about when they warned these people. They warned Richie and poor Richie forgot the key ingredient to make his cupcakes rise in the oven. Without baking powder, they were pretty rock solid. He didn’t even decorate his cupcakes because he was so disappointed.

Richie left the topping on the side. His dish was horrible. Was his worse than Kendall’s dish? Kendall made Churros. He mixed up the salt with the sugar and his dish was inedible. But then it came time to judge the dishes. The best dish from each region was chosen for a second taste. Nina from the Northeast team was chosen. She made a Bourbon Apple Crumble. It looked and tasted delicious. Next up was Jennifer from the Southern team. She made a wonderful Apple Spice Cake. And then the Midwest was called.

Apparently, it was Wayne. Wayne surprised everyone. He probably also surprised himself because his Harissa Spice Scallops with Apple Fennel Puree was delicious. The only thing he needed was a little heat because Aarón likes a little heat. He said the same of Kennedy when she brought down her Pork Tenderloin with Apple Gravy. Her dish looked the most expensive while being the cheapest. She just needed a little more heat to her dish according to Aarón to bring out the flavors. It was tough to decide between the four only the clear winner was Jennifer.

It’s great that she won because she protected Kendall. Kendall would have had the worst dish and got eliminated if it weren’t for her. With the South safe from elimination, the worst dish from the remaining regions were chosen to come up. Richie from the Northeast team was chosen. His Apple “Homecakes” were horrible. He just threw his apples on top and his dish had nothing to do with Apples. The next dish was Charles from the Midwest team. He made a Pan Seared Red Snapper with Apple and Potato Scales.

Charles biggest mistake was that he didn’t cook down the wine or anything. He just threw undiluted white wine on the dish. The parts without the apple tasted the best. The last person to be called was Lizzie. Lizzie made Pan Seared Scallops with Apple and Celery Root Puree. She overcooked her scallops. They were burnt. The dish was all over the place and the judges would have liked it if she hadn’t burnt her scallops. And so it was Richie’s mistake of lying to them by saying he always planned to make homecakes rather than cupcakes was what got him eliminated.

If he had just been honest about not adding the right ingredient, he could have been saved.

THE END!
