In tonight’s Station 19 episode, Ben was being rewarded with the Medal of Valor. He managed to save a life even after he fell through a roof. He was a great firefighter. He’s proven that time and time again and the city wanted to honor him for it. It was just him that felt he didn’t deserve the honor.
Ben kept remembering the person he didn’t save. He kept blaming himself for the person he didn’t save. He didn’t want to be honored or called a hero because he only saved one person in the fire that everyone was talking about. The others have saved countless lives. They stayed doing the job and some of them have gone the extra mile to save a life.
There was Vic. Vic was the only one that could see Beckett in a crisis. She wanted to help him. She became worried after he turned down his dream job as captain. She overheard him talking to an accident victim about struggling with his mental health and she nominated herself to be the one in charge of him.
She heard from Theo that he had taken a day off. She became worried about what he might do to himself if he was alone. She faked an appointment to get off work. She went running over to Beckett’s place. She came quite close to breaking in when he surprised her.
Beckett was cleaning out his garage. He seemed fine. He wasn’t drinking. Vic should have been reassured by that and she wasn’t. She was still worried about him. She basically babysat him all the while the rest of her team was dealing with politics. With Beckett stepping down, Fire Chief Ross needed to name a permanent replacement for him. She asked all qualifying lieutenants to step forward if they wanted the job. Theo stepped forward. Andy stepped forward. Even Sullivan stepped forward.
Sullivan knew the odds weren’t in his favor. The Fire Chief couldn’t be seen promoting him again after their relationship was revealed to the world. The only real contenders for the job were Theo and Andy. Andy turned down the job to clean up Beckett’s mess. Theo took the job and he’s been doing well so far.
Only Sullivan was known for being ruthless. He showed that same side of him during this competition for the captaincy. He began to turn Andy and Theo against each other. He told Andy that they got together because she has a ruthless side too.
Sullivan called her a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He egged her on when she chose to ignore a direct order from Theo. They were called to a car wash. There was a car that got trapped inside the car wash. It had two passengers inside and one of them had a head injury.
Andy went running into the car wash in spite of Theo telling her he wanted to wait until the power was off. He didn’t want to risk anyone getting hurt. Andy dismissed him because she thought he was overly cautious. Andy also thought she had what it takes to lead more than he does.
Andy still sees Theo as her stand-in. She doesn’t see him as an equal. Andy went rushing in and she saved the husband and wife trapped inside only she also put Maya in danger. Maya did get trapped by all the wiring when it turned on after a second source of power kicked in to replace the first. Theo knew about the second source. He tried to wait until it was found to send in people and again Andy ignored him. And then Theo tried to reinsert himself in order to look like he was the one leading the team.
It was politics in its true form. There was also the intrusion of real world politics. The vote for Mayor had begun and Station 19 was a polling station. Eli was showing up because he now works for Robel. It became awkward when he saw Travis. Travis tried to apologize for backing out of the race.
Eli hadn’t wanted to hear him out. It was just pure drama and the city eventually voted to elect Robel as the next Mayor of Seattle. Dixon lost. Ross now doesn’t have to use her blackmail material against him to keep her job as Fire Chief.
Ross saw Sullivan, Andy, and Theo all arguing. It made her realize that they might not have what it takes to be captain on a permanent basis. She decided to keep looking for a captain and Vic chose to keep an eye on Beckett. Beckett admitted he was suicidal. He needed some serious help to deal with all the grief he suffered on the job. Vic made sure that Beckett had continued guidance as he finally works on getting better. She showed true leadership. And yet she hadn’t told anyone else about what she did.
Maya also had the opportunity to go after the captaincy. She turned it down because she realized she still needed to work on herself. And that ended up saving her marriage.
And Jack was reunited with his foster sister, Lila.
THE END!
