In tonight’s The Blacklist episode, unfortunately that was a problem for dear old Red because he used the boat as a red herring. Red took his boat out onto the water and then he sank it before taking a smaller boat back onto the mainland. He also found out from his source at the marina that Dembe had been arrested. Red knew it was his fault.
He also knew that Dembe wouldn’t fight the charges. Dembe later admitted to Cooper to “borrowing” Ishwood’s cell phone to call Reddington. He explained that he was worried about the loss of life if the FBI were trying to force his friend into surrender. And that’s why Dembe was leading the charge to find Red himself.
Dembe wanted to bring him in peacefully. Something that couldn’t be accomplished if the Congressman has his way. The Congressman wasn’t even FBI and still he was calling the shots. He ordered Dembe’s arrest. He spoke to Attorney General to ensure that Dembe would be held at an FBI holding cell. They were transferring Dembe when Red hit their motorcade. He grabbed Dembe. He was trying to convince him to escape with him when the Congressman pulled Nixon’s gun. He wouldn’t believe Dembe when Dembe said he didn’t want anyone to get hurt.
The Congressman got spooked by a noise in the background. He pulled the trigger and he shot Dembe. Red killed the Congressman in retaliation. He then grabbed Dembe and they went to the nearest medical facility they could find. He left Dembe with a nurse. He needed urgent medical care only Red knew that Dembe didn’t want to go with him and so he left them at the care center while he went back out on the run. With the Congressman dead, things have gotten worse for Reddington. There was no place he could hide where they wouldn’t pursue him to now.
He also had an overzealous FBI Agent on his tail. Nixon hadn’t believed Ressler when he told him how the congressman got shot. He instead came to believe that everyone on the team was secretly aiding Reddington’s escape. He was ready to arrest all of them when another witness to the shooting came forward. They admitted the Congressman got himself shot. Not that Nixon was any happier by that tidbit. He admitted out in the open that he didn’t just want to arrest Reddington. He wanted to kill him.
Nixon didn’t care what anyone had to say. He openly spoke of killing Reddington in retaliation for the Congressman’s death. Herbie walked after he heard that. He refused to take part in someone’s murder. Cooper also heard it. He spoke with Nixon. He tried to warn him about his actions. Which Nixon didn’t care for. He got defensive. He got in Cooper’s face. They almost came to blows and Nixon eventually decided to ignore everything the team was telling him. He figured he’d find Reddington on his own. He knew Reddington was weak after donating blood to Dembe.
Nixon planned on checking hospitals. He failed to understand that Reddington was a tough it out guy. Nixon may not have listened to anything else but he heard that. He planned on killing Red off and so he secretly began following Cooper. They followed him to Reddington’s hideout. Reddington was no longer there. Cooper and Malik didn’t find anything only Nixon wouldn’t believe them. He thought they were hiding Reddington. He became paranoid as well as confrontational. He probably didn’t even believe the witness about the Congressman shooting an unarmed black man.
Speaking of Dembe, he thankfully survived surgery. He came to and he went right back to helping the FBI track down Reddington. Cooper spoke with the Attorney General. After his shooting, the AG was willing to drop all charges against Dembe in exchange for Dembe being relieved of duty. He’ll stop being an FBI Agent which Dembe didn’t mind. He thought he was going to die when the congressman shot him. He was now just going to enjoy his life. They all knew the task force was coming to an end. Nixon was right about that if nothing else.
They wanted their last job to be capturing Reddington. Dembe on the other hand warned them that Reddington might choose death than capture. He said Red was at peace with death. He wouldn’t mind if he died tomorrow. He didn’t even mind being on the run again. Red was someone at peace. He managed to call his granddaughter. He talked to her about her boy troubles and he said goodbye to her. He called the clinic where Dembe was being treated. He apologized for leaving him while also being happy that he was on the mend.
Red said he’d call again only Ressler managed to track him down in Spain. He tracked him down to a house. The woman that runs the place said her boss wasn’t there. And so Dembe told Ressler about how Reddington would often visit the local market every chance he could, but there was a language barrier and so eventually Ressler realized the maid had lied to them. There was a guest house behind the main house. That’s where Red had his deliveries made. Ressler went back to the property. He found Red’s things. Just not him.
The maid said that he went for a walk over the hills. Ressler took a helicopter with local police and they later found Reddington’s death body. He decided to go out on his own accord. He tussled with a bull. And with his death confirmed, came the end of the task force.
THE END!
