On tonight’s episode detective Dante was assigned a hostage situation. He was called down to a hospital where the mother of a patient had taken the whole floor hostage until her daughter gets a life-saving surgery. The poor child will die without the surgery. The little girl’s name is Emily. Her mother is Lauren Stone. Lauren has tried everything to get Emily that surgery. It was too high risk for insurance companies to cover it and it was too expensive for Lauren to afford on her own. She was a single mother. She was working multiple jobs just to stay on top of the medical bills. And no one was donating towards her GoFundMe.

The hospital could easily afford allowing low-income patients a chance to get on a payment plan. Only they were too greedy to care about the people they were supposed to serve. They wanted to get paid or no surgery. They were the ones that forced Lauren to do what she did. Lauren didn’t go into the building expecting to take anyone hostage. She had just gotten told her daughter wouldn’t be getting the surgery when she saw a security guard with a gun and she grabbed it off him before she could be stopped.

Lauren didn’t have a plan or an escape route. She was just desperate and she acted out of that desperation. Dante was at least sympathetic towards her and her daughter. He was a parent himself. He would do anything for his kids and he wouldn’t judge another parent for doing the same. Dante wanted to reason with Lauren. He wanted to talk her down and so he was a little surprised when TAC team came in hot. Commander Gregory had been given an order to breech the building and to do it fast.

The order was coming from the Governor’s office. They wanted TAC to break protocol and breach that building without trying to negotiate first. Dante didn’t know why. He reached out to Robyn McCall. He asked her for her help in this situation and he even discussed her with Lauren. He told her that help was coming. Robyn owes him anyways because of the events last week. As for Robyn, she was so glad that Dante was reaching out that she would have done anything he asked and that’s why she involved herself in this situation. And Robyn tried to resolve it by pretending to be a therapist.

Robyn tried to let TAC help her get in. They refused and so Robyn went over their heads. She went to DA Grafton. She asked the District Attorney what’s the rush in entering the building and, while Grafton didn’t learn the reason behind it, she learned enough to realize that the Governor was seriously pulling strings for this. Grafton also got Robyn an hour inside with Lauren. She was being timed, but Robyn was doing her best to talk down Lauren. She got Lauren the surgeon for her daughter.

She got Lauren to agree to free patients once her daughter gets the surgery. They were running out of time with the TAC team breathing down their neck and so Robyn found out why they were so gun ho. She learned that one of the hostages was a senator’s son. Robyn was going to walk him out of there to buy more time for the rest of them when one of the hostages decided to get gun happy. This woman who was rude all the way back from the start had grabbed her gun out of a bag. She tried to shoot Lauren. And all she did was shoot the surgeon.

The surgeon had finally come down. Emily was going to get the surgery. Then the only man in the whole hospital who could do this highly unique surgery gets shot in the shoulder. Dr. Keller will live. Only he couldn’t do the surgery anymore. They needed find a new surgeon and they were running out of time. TAC team decided to move in when they heard the gunshots. They even dragged away Dante when he tried to argue against it and so that’s when Harry came in. Harry found another doctor who has successfully performed this surgery before.

He performed the surgery in Iraq. He was now a cab driver in the States because the States was the only place that forced people to go back to school to get a job they’re already qualified for back in their home country. Harry found their surgeon. He brought him to the hospital and Dante threatened to go to the press if they weren’t allowed in. Which spooked the commander. Commander Greene allowed them to enter the hospital. The new surgeon began operating on Emily right away. And Robyn used that chance to finally get Lauren to hand over the gun.

Lauren turned herself in. She’ll be going away for a while. She has to face imprisonment for what she did. But Grafton was seeing what she could do to lighten that sentence. And the great news is Emily made it through surgery and she will one day have her mom again.

Meanwhile Aunt Vi found out the owner of her favorite restaurant had died. She died before she could write down her recipes and so Aunt Vi helped the woman’s children to recreate the recipes and save their restaurant. Aunt Vi had also used that chance to teach her niece Delilah how to cook gumbo. And Delilah was loving this connection with their Lousianana roots when she later learned that her father had applied for sole custody of her.
