In tonight’s The Voice episode, it was Night One of the Battles! Some contestants shinned brighter than the others, but it was all part of the process and you can’t find the winner of this season of “The Voice” without breaking some eggs. The experienced coaches knew this. The new ones not so much. The new guys still thought this stage was interesting while the more experienced ones knew that this was going to be the toughest part of the competition. They were losing people they carefully selected for their team. Blake actually dreads the Battles because he hates losing people. And to make matters worse his team was up first tonight.

Blake decided to put his powerhouses together. He paired EJ with Tasha. He had more time with his contestants this year because the advisors weren’t included this season. But it was still hard knowing that he had to eliminate one. He gave the contestants the song “Track of My Tears”. He thought one would stand out and it turns out EJ and Tasha were at the best when they were singing together. They sounded amazing together. They put on a great show for both coaches as well as the audience. And so this one was a tough one.

Even the other coaches felt that way. Kelly said that both contestants were evenly matched. Chance said they put on a great concert and Niall loved them both. Only Blake had to choose. He thought about it long and hard. He ultimately decided that he was going to keep Tasha. Tasha was the one that stood out the most for him. EJ went up for grabs and he got multiple offers. Both Chance and Niall wanted him for their teams. Chance had turned for him during the Blinds. Niall hadn’t done that except he did admit that was his greatest mistake on the show and that he wanted to fix it now.

EJ chose Niall. Niall used up his one Steal on him. He said that EJ would fit with his team perfectly. Chance meanwhile was upset because he lost on another chance to get EJ on his team and so he promised to get EJ during the rest of the Battles. It was Chance’s team that went next. Chanced paired Mariah with Jamar. They were the soulful ones. They also shared a similar tone and Chance knew they would bring out the best in each other and he wasn’t wrong. He chose the song “Gravity” for them. And they took him to church with that song.

They were evenly matched. They both had these incredible runs that made the song their own. Jamar had been great. Mariah had also been great. It only when he had to choose between them that Chance realized how difficult this was. He wanted to choose the both of them. He wanted to keep his team together and sadly that hadn’t been an option for him. Chance had to choose. He chose Jamar. Jamar stood out just a little bit further than Mariah and so tonight was the end of Mariah’s dream with the show. She was eliminated and she thanked Chance before she left.

Team Niall went next. Niall paired Gina with Kala. The ladies became great friends since joining Niall’s team. They thought this was the perfect pairing and the only downside was that they were directly competing against each other. Niall had chosen them for their amazing storytelling with their voice. He even felt the song “Skinny Love” would be perfect for them because of that. Niall enjoyed his time with them in rehearsals because they were so alike that he had to give them the same critique. And they got to grow together.

But they were another pairing that sounded perfect together. They should sing together forever and so Niall shot himself in the foot with this one. His fellow coaches were no help in choosing a winner because they were all over the place in who they preferred. Niall also didn’t want to split them up. He saw for himself why the Battles was so hard and he later chose Gina because, while this current battle didn’t help, he still had a feel for them from the Blind Auditions. And after Niall lost Kala, Kelly used her Steal to get Kala for her team.

It was Team Kelly’s turn next. Kelly paired ALI with Kate. She specifically chose them because of their differences. ALI was a rocker. Kate was more R&B. The only thing they had in common was that they both had a great amount of range. They were powerhouses. Just in different genres. Kelly only had room for one and so she brought them together to see who would stand out. Only choosing one song for the both of them was so hard. She had to choose something soulful as well as have a rocker theme to it. And so she chose the song “Must Have Been Love”.

Kelly didn’t want them to sing the song like the original. She wanted to modernize it and so they made their rendition a little more earthy. They each got to shine with this song. So, Kelly had been really great in arranging it the way she did. Some might even say she did too good of a job because she struggled to choose between the two. They sounded wonderful together. The other coaches absolutely refused to choose between them. And so Kelly later picked Kate because she felt there were was more maneuverability with Kate’s voice.

Later, Team Blake had their second showing. Blake paired Kason with Walker. He picked the two because they have similar voices. They were rockers. They also looked alike and so it was literally like having two different versions of the same person. Blake didn’t really need two of them. He only turned around for the both of them because he loves Rock. They were both one chair turns and so Blake didn’t really one to lose one, but at the same time he just didn’t have room for both of them and so he gave them a song he felt they could both shine in.

Blake gave them “Here Without You”. They gave a stellar performance but even the other coaches said they were too similar. They could only tell them apart because one chose to wear a hat and the other did not. Blake received no help from them. He had to make the choice on his own. He chose to go with Walker because somehow he was able to tell them apart and he thought Walker did a little more than his partner. And after him, it was Chance’s turn again to show off his own team in the Battles.

Chance paired Manasseh Samone with Sorelle. He gave them the song “Someone Like You” because he wanted to hear the connection to Manasseh’s powerhouse and Sorelle’s harmony. Chance was a great chose for them. He even knew when they had to pull away from the higher notes and when they had to harmonize. Chance also arranged the song. He wanted them to perform acapella in some parts with background music coming towards the end. And the end result was so perfect that everyone walked away loving this performance.

And so Chance chose Sorelle, but then he chose to deploy the Playoff Pass and so that Manasseh in the competition.

THE END!
