In tonight’s The Voice episode, it was Night One of the Semifinals! The nine semifinalists each got a chance to perform a solo song and a Taylor Swift duet with two fellow semifinalists tonight. The four artists with the most votes automatically moved on to the finale. However, there was no room for improvement.
The remaining five artists had to compete for the Instant Save. For the fifth and final spot in the finale. Their last chance in a sense. They had to be flawless tonight or else they go home. This was not like before when the judges saved them because they saw something in them. Some raw potential.
The judges were now focusing on winning the competition and they weren’t going to stick their necks out for someone that couldn’t even pass the semifinals on their own.
Up first was Ruby Leigh. She was the youngest in the competition tonight. She was just sixteen and she has an incredible talent. This week was fan week. The fans got to choose the song for the solos. They gave Ruby “Take Me Home Country Road”. Ruby got to use her yodeling skills. She got to be traditional Country that she loves and, while she may miss home, she was still pretty thrilled about getting to work with Reba McEntire. And maybe her later performance wasn’t as flawless as it could have been, only losing tonight won’t be the end for her and she showed off her high notes.
Next up was Mac, Huntley, and Lila. They were from various teams as well as various genres. They got to perform Taylor Swift’s “Exile” together. It helps that they are good friends and they love working with each other. Mac was a bit shy at first. He just wanted to stay in his hotel room. Only there was no missing Huntley. Huntley was a six foot bear of a man and he loved to bring happiness and cheer to everyone he met. Lila worked as a great bridge between the outspoken and the shy. They channeled that friendship into their music. They delivered on an amazing rendition for the Swifities.
Bias went on after them. The fans gave him “Bless the Broken Road”. He loved this song and he dedicated his performance to his wife tonight. He counts his wife as being the chief influence in his life. She was the one that encouraged him to pursue his music. He will fully admit he’d be lost without her. Therefore, he truly gave it his all tonight. He was both Country and Soul. He even has this raspy voice that he got to use with all his might. He was good tonight. The fans did well when they chose this song for him.
acquie Roar wash up next. The fans gave her Sia’s “Alive”. They loved that fighting spirit and she meshed it well with her genre. Jacquie was Country Rock. She may have performed a rendition only she made it her own with the way she rearranged it. There was soft-spoken moments. They were rocker moments. They were even Country moments. She really dedicated herself to this performance tonight and it was great. Sia was such a challenging artist. Most of the judges tend to shy away from that and they were all glad to see that Jacquie rose to the challenge.
Team Reba continued on with Jordan Rainer tonight. Jordan was in the bottom last week. She was only saved at the last minute and so she came out fighting for her life tonight. Especially as she has many Oklahoma natives cheering her on. They chose the song “Old Red”. It was a Blake Shelton song. She did great with it. She was so good that she had Gwen Stefani giving her a standing ovation. Gwen said tonight was her favorite performance of Jordan’s. And Reba said Jordan did all over America proud with her performance.
Next up was another trio. Jacquie, Nini, and Mara got to perform “Don’t Blame Me”. They all got smokey voices and so this duet felt like an actual girl group. They all got to shine. They all sounded in tune with each other during the harmony. They didn’t really know each other before this and now they’re friends. They also got to keep performing together after this because it would be a shame to break up the group. Hands down that was the best duet of the night. And everyone couldn’t wait to hear more from them.
Huntley was next. The fans gave him “Way Down We Go”. It was a great choice for him. He was Rocker all the way! He also showed off a quieter side earlier with his duet and so now he was back to his roots with his solo performance. He showed who he was as an artist. He showed that he could do anything. He could sing beautifully anything. And the judges loved him. They loved seeing this new side to Huntley and he became the one to watch. The others now had to defeat his performance to win top billing tonight.
Mara Justine was up next. The fans suggested “Parachute” by Chris Stapleton. Mara’s mother was battling cancer and yet she still encouraged her daughter to pursue her dream. Mara has a great support system back home. She has her mom cheering her on. She has her old high school cheering her own. Even her favorite pizza place back home did a whole menu with her in mind. Mara was feeling confident when she went out there and she killed it. She was great. She impressed everyone. John even felt bad for himself for losing her on his team.
Next up was the final trio duet. It was Bias, Jordan, and Ruby. They were all Country. Their duet on the other hand was Taylor Swift’s “Mean”. It was an early Taylor song. It was back when she was doing Country. Thus everyone involved in the duet was happy to break out the banjos. They had fun. They sounded great together and they could really tour together after this. They can all play off the fun side of Country music. The judges were left impressed and they hoped to see more from all of them.
Mac Royals was up next. The fans gave him “Love T.K.O” by Teddy Pendergrass. He was the only true R&B tonight and so they gave him that song because they wanted to hear something go down smooth. Mac tried to shy away during the rehearsals. Only John told him how to do it. He even sang an example of what he wants to hear from him. Mac must have been taking notes because he finally achieved stage presence tonight. They arranged the stage to look like a nightclub. Mac was sitting in the VIP section when suddenly he was leading the party. It was a first for the show. It also was a standing ovation from the judges.
Nini Iris was next. She has a cool ability of being able to sing absolutely anything. Her fans knew that about her and so they tested her with an Adele song. They gave her “Skyfall”. She put such a Soulful spin to it. She was another one with that raspy voice and so her performance tonight was like an opening sequence to a James Bond film. Nini was phenomenal. The judges openly admit that she has a career outside of this show and that her performance left all the others in her shade. She beat Huntley. She beat out Mac.
And lastly was Lila Forde. Lila loved having fans. The fans gave her “River”. It matched her singer/songwriter vibe she has. She was Indie Folk. She sounded great earlier with her duet and she sounded all the better once she got to fully show off her talent tonight with her solo. She moved Reba to tears. She had the other judges praising her and her coach. John freaking Legend got choked up just talking about her talent. But what wasn’t said was that she welcomed them all into Christmas festivities with that song. Most people still remember it from “Love Actually”.
And the results from tonight will be showed tomorrow!
THE END!
